16 ➳ A Dinner For Two
**unedited**
Thursday night. I was out and about, strolling along the streets of Tokyo. It was a beautiful scenery actually. Stars twinkled in the night sky, an inky black color. The sound of chatter filled my ears and I gripped the ends of my shirt as I neared the University. My eyes darted from the large building to the Sports Complex down the street.
Right next to it was a large park; the Ueno Park. It was a cherry blossom park, but the cherry blossoms weren't in bloom. The summer festival was going to take place there. Fliers were already whizzing around the city, plastered on every single coffee shop, alley walls, and stoplight poles and beams. My stomach turned and I sighed. This was entirely my decision. There was just one problem lingering.
How was I supposed to face everyone?
Face Makoto?
They'd made such a big effort to come out all the way to Tokyo for me, and I was literally blowing them off. Surely, they'd understand, right? I couldn't even imagine the vision of seeing them, completely upset over my choice. But that wasn't it, was it?
"Haru! Wait up!" Makoto panted, catching up to me at last. I'd almost forgotten that I was out here with him this night. "Geez, you're so fast, slow down! Admire the scenery for a change, will you?"
"I've got too much going on," I muttered.
"Huh?"
"Oh, nothing." He smiled and I flushed, looking away.
"Sounds like you're thinking about something important," he pried.
"Shut up," I replied, annoyed. "It's nothing important, I'll be fine." I took his hand and started walking towards Ueno Park. "Come on, I hear they have an amazing restaurant here."
"Wait!" He called, breaking free from my grasp. "Are you talking about the Konaya Curry Udon?" I nodded. "I actually made us reservations for there tomorrow," he confessed, rubbing the back of his head. I gulped and guilt washed over me. Everything was not turning out the way I wanted it to turn out.
"We could still go!" I was really trying to convince him. "I mean, maybe we could just have a quick dinner?" He sighed, placing his hands on his hips.
"If that's what you want," he agreed, partially satisfied. We wandered over to the entrance of Ueno Park. A tall gate loomed over our heads, fake flowers entangled in the railings. Small snowflakes were delicately hanging off of the petals and the trees. I relaxed myself as my fingers curled around his.
"Over here," he said, leading me to the restaurant. A petite girl was taking reservations and Makoto politely spoke to him, asking for a table for two. I was too busy enjoying the weather and lights to realize that the girl was Alyssa.
"Oh my god, Haru?" She cried, running over to greet me. I was startled and I jumped back. "I had no idea you were coming out here!" She lowered her voice and mumbled, "You could've made a reservation for your boyfriend and you."
"S-shut up!" I cried.
"Aww, you're blushing, how adorable!" She stopped and glanced at Makoto who was obviously confused.
"This is Alyssa," I explained. "You've already met, right?" I asked. He slowly acknowledged her and she grinned, shaking his hand.
"You're Makoto! Oh my goodness, Haru's told me so much about you! He goes on and on about how sweet you are and how amazing your sense of style is and don't even get me started on your eyes they-"
"Okay, okay!" I interrupted, hotly. "Alyssa, can't you keep your mouth shut?" But Makoto was chuckling to himself and I frowned, explicitly embarrassed. "Can we just have our table?" She put on a mischievous smile and pranced back over to her desk.
"Oh, I'll get you a real nice table," she said, slyly winking. She scribbled down some words on a thin slip of paper and handed it to Makoto. "We're supposed to have couple celebrating their anniversary in this super seductive and sweet booth, but I can make room for an even cuter couple."
"B-but won't you get fired?" I whispered. "Alyssa, don't be stupid." She only gave me a small smile and motioned us to follow her.
I hurried inside where red velvet carpet was covering the floor. Chandeliers dangled from the ceilings and a warm atmosphere was welcoming all of the customers. She took us up some towering spiral stairs and I gulped, staring down at the first floor.
"I never knew this had a second floor," Makoto said in awe.
"I never knew she could do this," I mumbled. He moved his arm around my waist and held me tightly. "Wh-"
"It's fine," he said. "It's obvious that she knows how sweet I am and how great my sense of style is."
"She doesn't know what she's talking about."
"Oh really? Then what about my eyes?" He leaned in and touched his forehead against mine. "What do you see in my eyes?"
"You guys are literally married." We both leaped away from each other, the sound of Alyssa's voice startling. "Here's your table."
It was a small, circular rounded table on the rooftop of the restaurant. There was only one table and the chairs must have been from some expensive designer or such. Dark purple drapes were neatly hung in the windows of the kitchen inside, and the view was exquisite.
"Wow!" Makoto gushed. "This is for us?"
"Mhm!" Alyssa approved. She winked at me and handed us some menus. "I'll get you guys a special server in case you need anything. . ."
"ALYSSA!" I screamed. "Seriously?"
"Hear that Makoto?" She laughed. "He's sweating bullets. Why don't you calm him down with a little massa-"
"Seriously leave," I said bitterly, gritting my teeth, my face heating up.
"Alright, alright you two. Have a nice dinner." She skipped away, hopping down the staircase and I sighed, setting my arms down on the table.
"She's something, all right," Makoto said. He started flipping through the menu and I did too. The prices here weren't as bad as it seemed, actually. "I wonder what she was going to say to me about giving you a 'massa' or whatever that was." I laughed nervously and shook my head.
"It was nothing," I said brushing it aside. "I think I'll have the Ebi Tempura," I decided, closing the menu.
"That's Rin's favorite!" Makoto added.
"When did you guys come here?" I asked.
"Last year," he replied. "You went to go visit your parents so Rin and I decided to take a trip to Tokyo with Rei and Nagisa."
"No one ever told me," I complained.
"Now, now, it wasn't a big deal. We stayed at a run-down hotel and just toured Tokyo. This was before I decided I was coming here." There was a silence and I said, "Speaking of memories, remember our second year at Iwatobi?"
"Don't even get me started! Remember when we opened up the swim club? Oh man, that brings back big memories."
"Swimming the medley relay with you, Rin, and Nagisa," I recalled. "I miss Iwatobi a lot."
"We should pay a visit when we come back for New Years!" I nodded my head and he smiled. "I'm really glad we came to Tokyo together, Haru."
"Yeah," my voice trailed off and I gazed out into the sky. "The sky looks really pretty."
"You're right. You can see almost all of the constellations." We both stood up and leaned over the rails, admiring the stars. There was a cool and faint breeze that blew his hair past his eyes. "Look, Haru! Is that the Heart Mansion?" A/N: The Heart Mansion is a Chinese constellation that is part of the twenty-eight mansions of Chinese Constellations.
"Yeah!" I exclaimed, peering up. It was perfectly aligned in the sky, the shape right above us. It felt like this moment would last eternally. That I would never have to leave him. I took a deep breath and smiled, my heart beating for his love.
"Haru," he began. "Thanks for coming to Tokyo with me."
"Makoto, you don't-"
"No, I mean it!" He said. A tear streamed down his eye and I stood frozen in time. "I don't know what I would've done if we wouldn't have come here together." He grabbed my hand in his, touched his fingers against mine, and slowly closed his eyes. "I love you. I love you so much and I can't wait for tomorrow."
I can, I thought, kissing him.
