What I've Been Waiting For All Year Long: Eggs

Everyone has that one thing in life that they have been constantly searching for. You know it's out there and you would do anything just to see it, hold it in your hands, or even be in the same room as it.

Sounds a little desperate, but aren't we all desperate for something?

I had never felt content with living in the same town for the past nineteen years of my life. There was always something better and more exciting out there than what was waiting for me here in the city of Plunger.

Yeah that's right, the city I live in now is called Plunger. Trust me when I say, this city is a lot worse than it sounds. Not only is there absolutely nothing to do here, there's never any new people to meet. Everyone who has lived here has stayed here, and no one wants to move here for a certain reason (just remember the name of this town, not very appealing).

The only part of my life that has changed this year is that I am starting college. Thank God I finished high school. There was nothing worse to me than going to the same disgusting place full of the same people. The only thing that everyone there was drink outside behind the bleachers or hook up behind the bleachers. Let's just say that the area behind the bleachers was definitely not the cleanest place. Who knew what kind of disease you could catch back there.

Gross.

Now that I think about it, college was still going to be the same people. The only difference was it was going to be a somewhat cleaner building. I wish I had the opportunity to go to some out of state college, but all of my scholarship options did not work out. I was a smart student, I just did not like to apply myself or actually put work into studying. It definitely reflected on my grades. My only option for college was to stay at the local community college for the next couple of years.

I slowly sat up in my bed and wondered why I was somewhat excited to even start this first day of college. All I wanted to do was stay in my bed and play mindless games on my phone and not have to worry about what I wanted to do with my future. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I guess I was already grown up, there wasn't really any more time to try and decide what I wanted to be.

I moved to my bathroom so slowly, I felt like I was moving in slow motion. There was no need to try and get ready quickly because it wouldn't make the day go by any faster. Looking in the mirror, I saw the multiple dark bags under my eyes. No matter how much sleep I got the night before, I always looked like a zombie in the morning.

"Good morning sunshine!" my brother exclaimed walking into the bathroom. He was always chipper, and I mean ALWAYS. I can't remember the last time I saw my brother angry or mean. "You ready for your first day as a big college student?"

"Oh yes I'm so excited," I responded sarcastically. "But it doesn't beat going to the finest Plunger High School in all of North Carolina."

"Hey you might hate that school, but I don't find it too bad," he said, pointing a finger in my face. "It's kinda bittersweet that it's my senior year."

"I don't know what is wrong with you," I said looking at him with a perplexed face. "I was over joyed that my senior year was going to be my last year."

"It all depends on your attitude," he told me. "If you had the attitude that you had in high school at Disney, you would be just as miserable."

"I find that hard to believe since I would be holding Minnie's hand and dancing with Cinderella," I responded rolling my eyes.

"Let's pretend you're at Disney now," he said, extending his arm out in front of me. "Hello, my name is Cinderella."

"You're an idiot," I said shaking my head. When I started to walk away from him, he quickly reached out and took my hand and pulled me towards him. "Carter!"

"One, two, three, one, two three," he chanted as he stepped in very uneven and non rhythmic steps. "Be our guest, be our guest, put our service to the test."

"There are so many things wrong with your song choice," I informed him. "First off, that's A Beauty and the Beast song and you're supposed to be Cinderella."

"I think Cinderella could be a big fan of Belle and her work," Carter said, humming the same tune.

"Second off-"

"Just shut up and have fun," Carter said, dipping me low to the ground. "No one likes a Debbie downer."

"It's hard to have fun when you keep stepping on my feet with your huge monstrous big foot feet," I giggled as he looked down at our feet.

"Alright, well I can't disagree there," he said as he let me go and did a classic Disney prince bow in front of me. "Thank you for the dance m'lady."

"You're such a goof," I laughed, rustling his hair up with my fingers.

"See, I knew I would be able to see that smile," he said, pointing to my face. "I will take a 'thank you Carter' anytime."

"Never in a million years," I told him as I grabbed my toothbrush and started to brush my teeth.

"Ouch," he exclaimed, clutching his heart. "I feel so hurt, my own sister won't even acknowledge my greatness."

He laughed as he walked out of the bathroom and went down the stairs. I took in a breath as the smell of waffles and bacon hit my nose. If there was only one thing I loved about the first day of school it was definitely my mom's cooking. My mom loved to cook us wonderful meals for dinner. It was a miracle that I was not 600 pounds because of her cooking. My brother and I will always grab thirds and fourths of her meals.

Although she loves to cook wonderful dinners, he hated cooking breakfast. She hates the idea of getting up early and having to cook when she could be getting "precious sleeping time".

Her words, not mine.

She knows how much Carter and I love her waffles and eggs, so she makes an exception and makes breakfast for us on our first day of school. Now you're probably wondering what makes her eggs so special, because an egg is an egg.

Her secret ingredient: thousand island dressing.

I know it sounds horrific, but that stuff is like the Chick-fil-a sauce of breakfast. You take one bite of those eggs and your taste buds are going on a magical roller coaster of flavor.

I quickly brushed my teeth and ran into my room and put on a hoodie, leggings, and my old beat up Adidas. There was no need to look nice today, it was going to be the same people I saw at high school everyday.

"Hey honey!" my mom exclaimed as I was walking down the stairs. She was whisking together her eggs and my mouth started to water.

"Good morning mom," I said as I walked up to her and hugged her. Unlike most mother and daughter bonds, my mom and I got along great. She was like my best friend. "I can't wait to eat those eggs."

"You and Carter both," she said, nodding her head over to the dining table. I turned around and saw Carter sitting at the table with a knife in one hand and a fork in the other hand. He was hunched forwards over his empty plate and looked like a kid on Christmas morning.

"Are you eager there beaver?" I asked, raising my eyebrows. He quickly nodded his and licked his lips. "Well let me join you."

I rushed over to the table and sat next to Carter. I grabbed my knife and fork and started beating on the table with my fist. "Breakfast! Breakfast! Breakfast!"

Carter joined in with me and started beating on the table as well.

"Alright, calm down!" my mom said as she poured the eggs on the grill. "The eggs will be ready in a few minutes."

"What about the waffles?" Carter asked, with a lot of concern in his voice.

"I hid them," my mom said, pointing her whisk at us. "You have to eat them with your eggs. If I had the waffles out before the eggs were done, you wouldn't enjoy it as much."

"I mean I think I would have enjoyed some waffles by now," Carter shrugged.

"Idiot brother," I said turning to him. "It's a delicacy."

"Andrea gets it," my mom said, giving me a wink.

"Suck up," my brother whispered to me.

I stuck my tongue out at him and he gasped and turned back to mom. "Andy just stuck her tongue out at me!"

"I did not," I lied, giving my brother a sly smirk.

"She's lying!"

"Shush!" my mom said coming over with a plate full of fluffy scrambled eggs and waffles. "You guys are almost adults and I still feel like I'm raising toddlers."

"Sorry mom," we both said at the same time as we grabbed the plates and started shoveling food onto our own plates. This was the moment I had waited 365 days for. Most people wait this long for Christmas, but I did not. I waited for these eggs from heaven.

"You better leave some for your dad!" my mom said as she walked back into the kitchen. "You know he loves this as much as you guys do."

"Hey, if you snooze you lose," Carter said with a mouth full of eggs. My mom gave him a stern look. It was that look that all moms gave you when you knew you should probably just shut up and smile at them. "I mean we can save him some breakfast stuff for sure."

My mom smiled and nodded her head as she walked around the corner and started going upstairs. "Love you guys, have a good first day."

"Love you too mom," we both said with a mouth full of food.

As I was shoveling this heavenly food into my mouth, I remembered that this wonderful morning was about to be ruined by having to go to school.

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Maybe there had been a weird phenomenon where everyone had been replaced by new, more interesting people.

No, that couldn't be true since I had just seen Katie Powell yesterday.

If only dreams did come true.
