Chapter 9- M
I'm alone for a long time after Dodobi leaves.
The room he put me in, the lounge, was a modest room. A couple of bookshelves and two sofas. I grab a random book and lie down to read and wait for my tour guide to come.
The next time I open my eyes, the book is open on my face, and my arms and feet are all over the sofa. I turned to look at the window to notice the sun's rays were no longer shining. It must be night then.
Huh, I thought the tour guide was supposed to come.
I went to open the door and it slid open smoothly. Stepping into the hallway, I see an almost pitch black hallway, the only light of which was illuminated by the moon.
I step out and close the door, but in the ever quiet hallway, it sounded like a slam. I flinched as the noise echoed through the empty school.
I walk in the direction I came from with Dodobi, though it was hard to distinguish between the paths. "Hey, Dodobi- I mean Headmaster Hummingherd- I never received my tour," I say to the walls as I walk, hoping someone hears. "I don't ever want a tour anymore. Just a bed".
I hear a tapping sound, and I turn the corner where it sounded loudest but come against another empty hall.
I heard it again and looked for the cause, but no one was around.
"Hello...Olivia"
I turn around and freeze.
Behind me is one of the men who took Gran. The one with the photos. The leader.
I charge at him, "Where is she? Where is my Gran!" Just as I reach him, he melts into the shadows and reappears behind me.
I go for him again, and he repeats. He laughs at my failed attempts and taunts me.
"She is perfectly safe," he says, surveying me. He tilts his head to the side and has a thoughtful look before adding, "For now". He laughs again and advances towards me.
"Why you-! Let her go!". I step away from him as he steps towards me.
"I will," he says as he grabs a piece of my hair and plays with it, "as soon as you give me the Fizi Kuhl Jasus". At my look of confusion, he remedies by saying, "The book".
I snatch my hair back and scream, "l don't have your damn book!"
"Well then, I don't have your damn Gran". He says it calmy, igniting a fire inside me.
"Dodobi will get to it before you" I scream at him, trying to affect him as he does me.
"Will he?" He tilts his head.
I'm so bothered by his nonchalant attitude that I'm shaking in rage.
"This Dodobi figure, you trust him?" He asks as he walks around me.
"Well, I sure as hell trust him more than I do you!"
"Aw, that's upsetting, but are you aware of his antics? Why is it that you trust him and not me when we are but the same?"
"Well for starters, he didn't kidnap my grandmother!" I say, getting up in his face,
"I kidnapped her, he allowed her to get kidnapped, what's the difference?" He asks with a small shrug.
"What do you mean," I ask, turning around as he walks behind me to inspect a vase. "He didn't know where Gran was going to be taken, or how, or even when. All he knew was that it was going to happen, and even I knew that".
"Or so you believe", he replied, "but really, he knew. He knew because we told him"
I'm stunned. Dodobi knew Gran was going to be taken. He knew the specifics about her kidnapping? Why didn't he do anything? And why would this guy tell Dodobi if they were after the same thing? Does he know how to be a bad guy?
"Why did you tell him. Isn't he your enemy? Aren't you after the same thing?"
"Yes and yes", he said as he tapped his fingers, "but we also had reason to believe your grandmother had the book. We made it so that Dodobi also suspected it so that he would retrieve it from her, and us from him. He had more chances of talking to her without causing alarm than we did. Of course, the plan didn't actually go down that way. Did you know he actually went to your Grandmother before finding you? He left as soon as he realized that she knew nothing."
That would explain why he didn't question the truth of my vision about Gran being taken. He knew they were after her.
I was right.
It was his fault.
I feel hot all over. He got my Gran kidnapped?
I turned my anger to him again, "Why did you take her then? If you knew she didn't have it?"
"Simple. To use as leverage" all of a sudden his demeanor changes. He goes from uncaring to serious. "Olivia O'Henry, you will find the Fizi Kuhl Jasus and give it to us. If not" he shrugs, "you can guess what will happen".
I stare at him with my mouth open. He wants me to get something from a world which I know nothing about? He wants me to steal something? All for Gran?
"Goodbye for now, and please don't disappoint us", he says as he leans to my face and twirls a lock of my hair, "You are the one who will face the consequence, along with your precious Gran".
"Wait", I say "if I decide to do this, how do I contact you? And what do I call you?"
"Don't worry about contacting me, I'll come to you" he turns to the shadows, "As for my name, you can call me M". He fades into the shadows until not a trace of him was left.
As soon as he fades into the darkness, all the light returns, the windows once again reflecting the bright rays of the sun. It was still daytime, I realized as I looked out the window, but it was just pitch blank outside. It must have been something M did.
I turn a corner and walk straight into Dodobi, almost making him drop his stuff.
"Olivia!" He exclaims. Annoyance was clear on his face.
I tried to hide the anger from mine.
"What are you doing here? I thought I left you in the lounge?"
"Yes well, I grew sick of waiting. You've left me there for so long. I grew tired of just sitting there" I bristle, attempting to control my feelings.
He rolls his eyes, "Kids these days", he mutters. "Olivia, I left you there for not even 5 minutes yet, and you complain", he says as he steps around me and walks through the hall.
"Wait, what?" I ask, confused. I was in that room for at least 2 hours. One with me asleep. One with me and M.
"Yes, and if I were you, I'd return there. Yolene is just about arriving I'd imagine, so get a move on young lady", and with that, he turned the corner and walked out of sight, his footsteps still echoing loudly.
I stick my tongue out at his back and turn around to find a girl around my age watching me with interested eyes and a tilted head.
We inspected each other at the same time.
She had on a knee-length navy shirt, outfitted with jeans and a bedazzled bag. She was around my height, so in context, short. Her hair was like the ocean, blue, untamed, and wild, and her eyes sported a look of knowing that seemed way beyond her years.
She breaks the silence first, holding out her hand and saying, "Hi, I'm Yolene, you must be Olivia. I'm here to give you a tour of the school". Her voice was soft and airy, and almost musical.
I nod my head and say, "Yeah, I'm Olivia. Are you a student here? I thought the school hadn't started yet?"
"It hasn't, but my dad works here, and we live on campus, so I'm here even when everybody else is not". She shrugs. "I know all the ins and outs and everything in between".
She points towards the school. " I'll show you around, and you can keep asking questions if you would like, but I would prefer it if we keep walking".
We head off and I take one last glance behind me where both M and Dodobi had stood.
I could see the shadows next to the curtain move.
I shuddered thinking that he may still be watching me.
That he may always be watching me.
What is worse, being blackmailed for something you had no chance of doing, or staying with a person with no value for human life?
