Chapter 5- Men in Black
I take my phone out of my pocket as I run back home. I send Gran a frantic text telling her to go home. Stopping for a couple of seconds, I look at the street name and let out a grumble. By car, this way would take about 10 minutes. Walking takes about 20, if I run, maybe 15.
I don't have that time, I thought as I looked at the passing cars. An idea was forming in my head.
"Hey", I scream as I run onto the road, waving my hands in the air. The car coming stopped, and the driver sported a confused look while the guy in the passenger seat looked annoyed.
I ran to the driver's window saying, "Hey, look, I'm in a rush. I'm worried about my grandmother. She's in trouble. Can you take me home?"
Noticing the seriousness of my tone, the lady driving nods with a determined look while the guy rolls his eyes and gestures for me to get in the back.
"Oh thank you both so much!"
Turning to open the car door, another wave of nausea comes, this time with a round of pain. I double over, holding my head in my hands as a deafening sound fills my ears.
Closing my eyes, I see the men behind the women. I want to yell. Warn her somehow, but my voice won't work. I just watch helplessly as they knock her out and take her away.
I open my eyes and am back on the road. A couple of cars made a line behind this one and had started honking their horns.
I gesture an apology and get in the car, buckling my seatbelt as I wipe the stray tears away from my face.
"Are you okay dear?", the lady asks as she looks at me through the rearview. I nod and tell her my address, and she starts driving.
Bing.
"Where did you go? -Ten".
I ignore it and turn to the window.
I'm coming, Gran.

Getting out of the car I say a quick thanks before running into the house.
"Gran! Gran are you home?"
I check the kitchen, seeing only the dirty dishes. The mess from this morning was gone as if it were never a thing. I checked the bathroom, the living room, the backyard, her room, and my room. She was not here.
I get my phone out and dial her number, running a hand through my hair. "Hey, it's Andrea. For some reason, I can't talk right now, but do leave a message after the beep".
Beep
"Hey Gran", I breathe into the phone. "I need you. Come home please. It's an emergency".
The next couple minutes were spent repeatedly calling Gran and pacing the room. By 10 minutes, I had grown impatient and decided to go to her. At least I'll have peace of mind once I see her safe, I thought.
I packed a light bag, just water and a couple of snacks. I grabbed my bike helmet as well. Gran was a forest inspector and spent her days in the woods, and walking there could take forever. As I tied up my shoes, movement across the window caught my eyes.
Moving to the blinded windows, I could see a couple of men walking in a jittery way and looking around as if to check if anyone was watching. I moved closer to the window and pushed the blinds back enough to see them clearer, and I saw them.
The men from my vision.
Who kidnapped a woman.
Gran.
My heartbeat sped up. What are they doing here?
I peered to the side to notice there were about 5 of them from what I could see. All identical. Tall men, wearing an all-black ensemble that included a trench coat and a hat. They had a scarf or something pulled up to their noses, so I couldn't get a proper look at them.
One of the men, the one who had an aura about him which screamed he was in charge, barked some orders not eligible for me to understand. Two men started towards the house-— my house— while the other two stayed back and appeared to play lookout. Just as I was pulling away, I noticed a photo in the leader's hand.
I tilted my head to look at it. It was blurry, and from a distance, but I could make out the person just enough to recognize it was me.
My heartbeat spiked up, and the thumps were so loud I was afraid that they could hear.
They are the ones from my vision, the ones who took Gran, and now it seems they want me too. The guy in the middle, the one with the photo, said something to the lookouts and started towards the house. I took a last glance at the photo before backing away but noticed something on his hand. A tattoo of some sort. It had a drawing and words that I couldn't make out from my distance. Almost in a daze, I stare at it.
I looked back at the man to find him staring at me.
Startled, I jump back into the table behind me which knocks over a vase, shattering it. The two men from the side started moving towards my direction. The middle guy, who had still not taken his eyes off me, gestured to the lookouts to also come.
I jump back as they try opening the front door. Not taking a second glance back, I get my bag, phone, and helmet— safety first— and bolted to the back door. Once exiting, I looked around the house to see the 4 men struggling to find a way in. The house was burglar-proof, Gran was always paranoid. The man in charge just stood beside them and impatiently waited for them to get the house open.
As if sensing my gaze, he turns to look at me. I can't see his mouth, but I can feel his cold smile and icy gaze washing over me, scaring me.
Who are these men? What do they want?
He yelled in a language I'd never heard, but the message became clear as all the men started towards me.
I ran to my bike, propped up by the garage door, and took off.
I was going to the forest. To Gran. There was a chance they came to find me first, so she may still be safe.
And unaware that she was being hunted.
I turned around to see the four men running after me, though they were a reasonable distance away from me.
They didn't catch my attention as much as the original man.
He stood unmoving, still in front of my house. He played with the photo of me in his hand, and gave me an icy smile I couldn't see, but feel.
I looked forward and shuddered. Whoever they were, they were not the type of people Gran or I should be around. I heard someone yelling in the language again, and the sound of running footsteps stopped.
My blood chilled.
I don't even want to know what he said.
