Chapter 18- Too Many Secrets
Danial walked ahead as we silently trudged through the hallway that connected the gate to the restricted area of the library. It was essentially a smaller but grander version of the mainstream library.
Danial turns to face me and says, "You look this way for anything about the Jasus's", he says as he points to the left side. "And I'll look there".
I nod, still feeling quite skittish about the idea of M watching us.
The only time he talks to me is to tell me what to do, I think as I search through the shelves.
Both sides of this room were just bookshelves along the walls, and tables spread across the room. The room was actually small, at least compared to what I thought it would be. It was just a room connected to that hallway. I fail to understand how this place is considered safe for these so-called priceless artifacts.
I skimmed past the bookshelves, briefly letting my eyes go across the titles. I don't think that they would put these really important books on simple shelves.
Or maybe that was what they wanted me to think? So I wouldn't look there?
Grudgingly, I go back and look through the shelves to make sure I don't miss anything. Imagine how sad it would be if my laziness was the reason I missed something important.
By the time I had finished with the shelves I was feeling thoroughly tired, but looking over at Danial told me we weren't going to stop until we found something.
Walking over to the tables, I decided not to look through the books and papers scattered atop it. If the Jasus's were as important as everyone said they were, then no one would leave information about them just lying around.
Danial scoffed when I told him, and then ordered me to look through it.
Who does he think he is? I thought as I wade through the papers mindlessly. If this was so important to him, he could have easily done this himself and saved me the effort.
I pick up a random book and flip through its pages, and once again, feel the overwhelming sense of nausea, and my surroundings change.
I'm still standing where I was before. Still in the restricted part of the library. Still in that same mess. Still holding that book.
But no Danial. And there was sunshine seeping through the roof. And I heard voices echoing off the walls in the hallway that connects the rest of the library to this part.
I duck down as Dodobi and his companion come into view, despite knowing they can't see me. Dodobi silently and swiftly leads him through the room, and the second he reaches the right corner, a staircase just appears. Biting down my surprise, I watch as he doesn't miss a beat and continues walking as if it didn't just appear out of nowhere. Of course, they wouldn't be stupid enough to leave the important stuff out in the open. It was hidden somewhere here.
This must be right after my last vision, I thought as I raced after them.
They walk towards a door, and Dodobi pauses to open it and holds it out for his friend saying, "Please sit, I will be back shortly".
After making sure his friend is seated and comfortable— damn his hospitality, makes it harder to find things about him to hate— he rushes away to another door across the hall.
He enters the room, and I quickly slip in before he has the chance to close the door.
Dodobi does some muttering under his breath and shuffling around the room, so I take the time to inspect the room.
The room was bare, just a desk, dresser on the opposing wall, and side table.
Dodobi opens the dresser and frantically pushes all of its contents to the floor, making me wonder what his friend would be thinking about this noise.
He steps closer, stepping over and on the things he just discarded, and pushes his hand far into the dresser.
I move so that I'm just behind him, ducking under his arm to see what he's doing, and I watch as he pushes the back wall of the dresser to make it collapse.
Behind it was a cave. It was a dark hallway, and it made me want to find out what hid at the end of the way.
Dodobi doesn't focus on the cave, but what was on the floor next to the new opening in the dresser. A set of books.
He takes one of the big books, before setting it gently on the ground— paying more respect to them than he did for the dresser's contents.
He turns back to the dresser and covers the cave entrance, and lazily attempts to return the discarded items to their place, but just pushes them all in messily and closes the dresser before they have the chance to fall out.
He hurriedly picks up the book and runs back to the other room, tripping over his own feet a couple of times.
My interest has definitely peaked. These must be the actual important books. I have to admit, this was kind of smart. If anyone comes to this part of the library looking for something— like say, two teenagers looking for answers— then they'll spend all their time looking in the wrong place.
Now that I know where to get these, I just want to go back to my present. I don't know how much time we have left before Mr.Sinha notices the missing key and alerts someone, so the sooner I can lead Danial here, the better.
The only problem— I don't know how to get back.
Finding nothing better to do, I follow Dodobi back to the earlier room, where I find him sitting at the desk flipping through the book while the other man looks on with placid interest in his eyes.
I take the time to look at this room, which was much nicer and fuller than the previous one. There was a grand desk in the center and a grander chair in which Dodobi sat in. Two chairs were placed on the side opposite, and as the man sat on one, I decided to perch on the other. The entire wall behind Dodobi was filled with pictures, and I could just make out his smiling face in almost every photo.
I blatantly ignored them. I didn't need to start liking him more than I already did.
"What are you looking for Dodobi?" the guy sitting next to me asks cautiously, looking almost as impatient as me as we watch Dodobi look through pages.
"Dear boy, we are close!" Dodobi replies annoyingly vague.
The man— who I have decided to dub, Mustache Man, for his grand and twirling mustache that actually curls at the end— seems almost as confused as me.
Dodobi continues turning through papers faster than humanly possible, muttering under his breath, "So. Very. Close."
Mustache Man looks confused. I feel confused.
Dodobi seems pleased at a page he found and slams it in front of Mustache Man proudly.
Mustache Man eyes it warily. "What am I supposed to do with this?"
Dodobi actually rolls his eyes, making him look much younger than before. It makes me wince knowing how much the search for the Jasus is affecting him, and knowing that I'm against him in this.
"It's a book for goodness sake," Dodobi says exasperatedly. "You read it".
Mustache Man carefully grabs the book and looks at the page Dodobi opened for him. His brow burrows, and he flips to other pages, then to the front of the book.
"This is the Record of Leavlings?" he asks.
I didn't know it was possible, but he manages to look more confused.
Dodobi nods and Mustache Man's eyebrows burrow more. "What does this have to do with anything?"
Dodobi leans back on his seat— I honestly think the word throne is a better word to describe it— and says, "Goodness Alex, for all your education, you really are daft".
Before being able to reply to his insult, Mustache Man— Alex, as Dodobi called him— gets interrupted when Dodobi says "I told you our scouts have found that a Leavling woman has the book. Looking through the Record of Leavlings, I can determine that she has been in possession of more than one Parax artifact in her years. Her father worked with the archeologist branch, and he kept trinkets that were deemed useless. I believe one of the things he found was the FiziKuhl Jasus. Based on what we know, the books look nothing like they used to, so it is entirely possible he saw a battered old book and decided to take it. He has long since passed, but his possessions went to his daughter. If that's the case, then the Jasus is in her possession, whether she knows it or not".
"When do you leave to get it?" Alex asks with burning excitement.
"I leave tonight," Dodobi says just as excited.
Alex smiles and laughs almost manically. "We've got our book!"
They both get up and clasp their hands in the way that guys do.
"Who is the person?" Alex asks as they both sit down. "I mean, is it anyone I know?"
Dodobi's smile stays in place as he absentmindedly says, "Rohana Skywall".
Alex sucks in a breath, causing not just me, but also Dodobi to look at him in confusion.
"What?", Dodobi demands as Alex's lips purse.
"Nothing", he says with a shake of his head and a smile on his face. You could smell how fake it was. "It's just been a while since we went to school with her. I heard she has a granddaughter".
"I'm glad", Dodobi says. "I always thought that she would not recover after her daughter passed. It's good that she has someone to be with her". Wait, Gran and Dodobi know each other?
Alex sighs, apparently not getting the response he was looking for. "What do you think of her having a granddaughter though? I mean, don't you think that she should at least attend Fizi Tal Obasi, to learn to control whatever abilities she has?"
"I think that defeats the purpose of becoming a Leavling", Dodobi replies. "Besides, Rohana is more than capable to teach the child whatever she needs to know".
I watch Alex with pursed lips. Dodobi doesn't sense anything wrong with this conversation, but there's something more to whatever Alexs been saying. Since Dodobi is caught up in his small victory of knowing the whereabouts of the Jasus, I'll take it upon myself to find out what's with this guy.
Alex watches Dodobi almost as intensely as I'm watching him, and his creased forehead tells me there's a lot going through his mind right now. When Dodobi looks back at him, his face suddenly clears and he lets loose a huge smile. "Now that we know this, what about your grandson? When can I expect to see him again?"
I reel back in shock. Dodobi has a grandson? I look back over at the pictures and take a good look at them. At first glance, I thought it was Dodobi in every photo, but it was a much younger teenage boy instead.
"He's spending the last week before school starts with his friends. You'll see him again when the year begins".
Alex nods in understanding and says, "It's funny how fast time goes by. I mean, just look at you and Rohana, you both are grandparents, and I don't know about her, but you still act how you did back in our day".
The way Alex was looking at Dodobi when he said that made me think there was something deeper to what he said, but going through his words I found nothing that stood out.
Dodobi, apparently, didn't get the same feeling like me and says "If you want grandkids Alex, you need to have kids first".
Alex laughs, but it's more an exasperated one, and with a shake of his head he asks. "How do you plan to get the Jasus then?"
"I don't want Roahans attempt of bringing herself and the girl out of this lifestyle to be ruined, so I'll go when the girl is somewhere else and speak to Rohana directly. She probably doesn't know she has it, so I'll just talk to her, she'll give it. I leave, she'll stay. We'll live separate lives".
Alex nods his head unconvinced.
I'm left feeling utterly confused as I watch their exchange. What in the world is happening. What are they talking about?
As if I'm pushed, I stumble forward into Danial as I'm transported back to the present.
He pushes me off and angrily yells. " You've got to stop doing that! I've tried talking to you, but it's like you're not even here. What's wrong with you?"
I felt the sting of his comments. Even among weirdos, I'm weird? And who is he to talk to? Mr-I'll-hurt-people-to-the-point-of-killing-them-because-I-got-MAD?
I bite back my words, understanding that there are more important things to do and a time crunch as I say, "I know where they are".
I don't need to say anything else, he understands. He grabs the key off the table and looks at me expectantly, fully trusting me just by my words.
I lead him to the right corner, and as expected, the staircase just appears. Danial looks on with interest as he pushes past me and climbs up. I roll my eyes at his absence of a 'thank you, but silently follow him.
Shouldn't I be the one leading, I thought bitterly as I trail after him, I'm the one who knows where to go.
Just as he reached the top, a bright light lands on us and I cover my eyes with my hands as I hear Danial curse under his breath.
I turn to see Mr. Sinha holding out his flashlight at us.
I feel my earlier joy being replaced by bitterness and feel the change in Danial as well.
Damn the timing.
