Chapter Four: Memories
Maffie stared off into the dark sky, looking wistfully at the stars. Caspian was beside her watching as well.
"Do you remember him very well?" Caspian asked, talking about his father of course.
Maffie nodded.
"Bits and pieces, I remember he always said he was going to talk me sailing, but he never did. I also remember him reading us books about the Golden Age. Do you remember that?" She asked. Caspian shook his head.
"Not really." He said sadly.
"Oh. You were little I guess. You always fell asleep but I stayed up the entire time, I fell asleep almost as soon as he finished reading." She laughed a little, Caspian smiled a little.
"How old was I when he died?"
"I was nine, so you were four or five."
"Oh."
They sat in silence, watching the stars, suddenly Lucy came out and smiled at them both.
She sat beside Maffie.
"I never meant to leave." She whimpered. Maffie and Caspian looked over at the little queen they had heard stories about.
"Hmmm?"
"They're fighting in there, Peter and Susan are with the dwarves, Nikabrik was saying we left on purpose and that it is all my fault because I led them away. It's not my fault is it?" Lucy asked. Maffie and Caspian both shook their heads.
"No. It's not your fault. Nikabrik just wants the fighting and brokenness to be over, he'll blame anything on anyone."
"Promise?"
Before Maffie could answer Peter came out and shook his head.
"Is it Nikabrik?" Maffie questioned. Peter nodded and Maffie stood up.
"I'll go deal with him." She said as she was leaving.
"Thanks." Peter said. Caspian looked over and saw the High King had his arms wrapped around his younger sister tightly as Lucy cried quietly.
"Caspian, how old is your sister?" Peter asked, Caspian bit his lip.
"She's nineteen." He answered, Peter nodded and stroked Lucy's hair.
Finally after a long silence Maffie came out with a shaking Edmund and Susan.
"Edmund calm down. It won't happen, I promise." She was assuring him.
"What happened?" Peter gently guided Lucy to Susan and grabbed Edmund tightly. Maffie shook her head.
"Something about the White Witch." She said. Peter's eyes hardened and he guided Edmund off so they could talk. Lucy was watching sadly.
Maffie wrapped an arm around Caspian, he leaned his head on her shoulder.
"Is he going to be alright?" Caspian asked. Lucy nodded.
"Yes. After Peter calms him down." She explained. Caspian sighed and closed his eyes to block out the tears that threatened to spill.
