Tell them a lie.

They're bound to ask about their missing parent at one time or another. Have a story ready that relates to who they are in a way but doesn't make them sound dead or like idiots who left the family.

If you marry after your god fiasco:
Don't tell them that their step parent is their real parent. It will only make finding out a god is their parent harder.
