Tip #2
Catch up on your mythology.
Not only should you know your Greek gods (most importantly the parent of your child), but you should know the monsters from the myths well enough to know how to defeat them should the need arise.
For example, my old friend Sally Jackson-Blofis needed to help her son get past a Minotaur. Her advice to him? "Wait until the last second, then jump out of the way - directly sideways. He can't change directions very well once he's charging."
Speaking of her son and catching up on your mythology, he's written books about Greek Gods and Heroes; you might have heard of them. I didn't have them back when I was raising Elsie...but anywho, they're better to understand than most other mythology books.
