Why the hell to people read/Wright characters x reader?

Like-

Dosent it make you feel like a narcissistic (ha ha) asshole? Or an attention whore? Are there any  x reader where the characters is a dick and DOSENT end up with the love intrest? Like in real life? But honestly what's so gripping about them? There all fourth wall breaks and other BS. Someone explain pls. Also, are there any gender-neutral ones? I want to try it but I'm freaking out about my own gender so it's best not to dwell on it. Eh.
