This is for all the writers on here. I'm sure that it's not news to everyone but I'm bringing awareness to it so that we all don't fall victim and prey to scammers and protect our stories.
There are people claiming to be representatives of publishing companies who reach out to wattpad writers to monetize our work by offering non-exclusive deals.
I
almost fell victim to that a couple months back. I had received a message from a representative from Webnovel who "took interest" in my work and wanted to strike a deal with me. Me being excited and oblivious I agreed to it with no hesitation and they directed me to a Aurora Stephanie and Editorial Staff member at A&D Entertainment. They provided the links and everything.
I talked to my best friend about it and she told me that she's never heard about that publishing company. So I decided to do some research and look it up on google and my soul left my when I saw articles about victims of being scammed by said company pop up. I was lucky that I hadn't signed anything or went through with the process and backed out.
Earlier today I received an email from Aurora again:
So I decided to investigate a little to see if they actually read my work and this is what happened:
From my interaction with them, it looks like they're a bit too evasive and wants to strike the deal and go about their day. After the last message, they didn't respond. Not yet anyway.
Like I said before, it's probably not news to anyone, so why aren't we talking about it? Why aren't we making noise and bringing awareness about it?
Imagine people being preyed and manipulated into these things only to find out these people are trying to claim rights over your work and there's nothing you can do about it because they have all the power. It's disgusting.
We need to be talking about this.
