Entry 38

As the image above implies, imma be talking about my home country, Zimbabwe. Let's get into it.

So Zimbabwe is a landlocked country found in southern Africa and at the centre of Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and south Africa.

It was formerly called Rhodesia back when it was a colony under the British Empire and before it declared its independence on April 18 1980.

Zimbabwe got it's name from one of its tourist attractions Great Zimbabwe found in Masvingo. And if you go back to the image of the flag and notice the bird in the white triangle behind the red star: Great Zimbabwe has statues of those birds. Plenty of em.

Fun fact: Great Zimbabwe's name is actually derived from the phrase "dzimba dzemabwe" which translates to stone houses and here's why:

This is the Great Enclosure where the Chief of Great Zimbabwe's first wife resided. The other wives had their own complex. The Chief had his own complex at the hills and it's a long and tiring climb up there. I'll tell you that much.

Yes. His first wife. Polygamy was a thing back in the ancient times lol.

There are 8 provinces (or states) here. we speak three languages. English, Shona and Ndebele. Mashonaland, Manicaland and Midlands are were Shona is spoken the most and Matabeleland is were Ndebele is spoken.

We only had one president since 1980, I'm pretty sure people are familiar with Robert Mugabe, until he was removed from power in 2017 after the government staged a coup. I remember people were parading the streets of Harare. I'm not going to get into the political nonsense that happens here.

How is it like there?

Well...it's alright but it does have it's downsides.

I live and grew up in the capital and it does get crowded in town. Also, I remember back when I used to move around town I had to deal with mahwindi (bus conductors) or any men above the age of 20 cat calling me or try to touch me -ugh😑. I normally wore earphones and played my music on loud to avoid any form of conversation with those mother fuckers.

Things do get overpriced and expensive here. Again I'm not going to get into it.

But the good thing about Zimbabwe is that we do have a good education system. I'm pretty sure our education system is a bit more advanced than South Africa coz I'm student at one of the universities there and I noticed that some of the stuff we covered in first year I did them in high.

So yeah. That's pretty much Zimbabwe 😄.
