6 Good Idea Bad Idea
How many times have I started reading a story with the pairing of a bully and his victim? Too many times. How often is said victim abused horribly by the bully and his friends? Too many times.
Guys and gals, lets take a moment to be serious here. This is not okay. There is a huge difference between a violent repeat assulter and a well-done bully-type who falls in love subgenre (or the charming trope of the "Deres" as brought to us in anime).
Ask yourself this: Is my bully excessively violent? To his would be love interest? Recently? And it's not Stockholm or SM? And I haven't warned my readers?
There is a right and wrong way to make this a romance storyline that doesn't make actual gays cry and cringe when they read it. First rule of fight club does not apply here, let's talk about it.
Your main guy actually needs to be loveable. If he isn't then your reader doesn't want him to end up with the other guy. Or make it absolutely clear that your bottom gets off on this really hard. (I've seen this done and it CAN be hot as fxck.)
Is the dude clearly bipolar? Then don't flip him back and forth between loving/violent in private. It comes off as a shock and then your reader doubts your reformed bully's ability to keep his temper with our poor victim later. Or get him counselling if you insist.
Fxcking is okay, and feel free to use guilty feelings to show hesitancy... not severe violence unless it's an SM story. Again make your distinction between the genres more clear because some of the stuff I've read accidentally is hard core.
It's okay to have some crazy arses in your story. Hell it can even be fun. There are lots of types out there that you can use to pair up as tops and bottoms. You can even pair up two crazy types and watch sparks fly.
One thing is certain though, angry sexz is awesome when done right. I mean sure, one guy can slam the other up against the lockers and then they make out like crazy later or something (wink wink). Or one can deny, deny, deny... Until he just CAN'T anymore.
But it just makes me feel sick when my poor bottom is beaten half to death, apologized to, betrayed, beaten again, told he is loved and then forced by the author to forgive and love that man time and time again.
No.
What are you telling people?
That's not okay in a romance.
SM maybe.
Horror.
Hardcore M fantasy.
LABEL THIS SHXT!!
I personally like to use many different types in my stories. Big burly guys, athletes, small nerds, swimmers, business men... All with their own type. For instance, in my cliche oneshot we have the Kuudere, Mr Wulf. (See below)
But I let my characters develop between the types too. Doing this is great for story line, but it is only a good idea if you haven't built your bully up too much and made him into a monster in the eyes of your audience.
Unless, you know, it is the point of the story. Like in some of my oneshots in From the Hidden Cupboard. Also which I have seen very well done by other authors, and you know... Was warned about before I started fxcking reading.
Can you match up some of my characters with the lists up there?
Theo? Raphael? Gabriel? Greg? Mark?
What about some of your own?
