We've all heard at least one version of the old Arthurian myths, full of knights, magic, and romance. We've all heard the names as old as the legends themselves: Merlin, Morgana,Mordred, Lancelot, Guinevere, even the great king himself, Arthur. But have we ever considered that maybe Merlin didn't have starry blue robes and a long white beard?

Welcome to Camelot, the kingdom under the rule of the stone-cold King Uther Penndragon. Twenty years after what is called the Great Purge, a young man by the name Merlin comes into the heart of this kingdom in hopes of learning wisdom from an old friend of his mother's, the castle's current physician. But he holds a secret that could mean certain death if ever found out.

Merlin has magic.

With the threat of execution, or burning at the stake, hanging above his head, Merlin tries his hardest to keep his head down, but that isn't enough. He catches the attention of the young Prince Arthur, an arrogant, bullying prat. They become friends, through strange, extreme, and sometimes embarrassing circumstances. Merlin also becomes well-acquainted with a kind-hearted maidservant of Lady Morgana, Guinevere, and easily spots the possible chemistry between her and the prince, playing matchmaker to the two of them multiple times. Gaius, Merlin's wise old mentor, does his best to keep the young man out of trouble with his neck still intact. All of the characters go through many hardships, testing adventures, and moral dilemmas, yet come out in the end wiser, stronger, and wearier.

The cast (Bradley James - Arthur), Colin Morgan - Merlin, Angel Coulby - Gwen, and Katie McGrath - Morgana, just to name a few) does such a wonderful job portraying BBC's version of the old myths and legends. The banter between Merlin and Arthur is very enjoyable, as well as

watching as their friendship grows throughout the seasons. Sadly, this show has run its course in five seasons, ending in 2012, but the myths still live on. There are many twists and turns, as well as a boatload of tears and laughs. Merlin may not be as popular as many of the other fandoms out there, but it is still a wonderful show for both watching with your family or binge-watching it by yourself.
