Chapter 12 - Can Even I Be Courageous?

My pokegear's ringing reverberated in my ears. There was no way that I could sleep any longer. I sat up in my sleeping bag and answered it, still half asleep. "Hello?"

"Hey Elron, I have another job for you. Would you be up to it?"

"Oh, it's you Daron." The green and black wearing man-with-a-plan had been paying me to do smaller jobs around the region for several months now. Normally they were just "fly to this location and check something for me" kind of jobs, but every once in awhile he would have me go to lab work in some remote location. He paid pretty well, and Flora didn't mind the detours, so it was only logical that I took up the jobs. A man has to eat after all.

"I need you to fly to the islands on route 105 and see if any of them have freshly formed caves. Can you do that?"

Why was it always new caves? How does a cave suddenly appear anyways?! Flora stirred and started to wipe the sleep from her eyes. I sighed. "Yep. I'll take care of that."

"Very well. I'll transfer the funds to your account. Goodbye."

"Bye." I hung up.

Flora got up out of her bag and stretched. "Who was that? Did you get another job?"

"Yeah, it was Daron wanting me to go route 105."

"Route 105?! Yay! It's been awhile since we've gone somewhere warm!"

"The desert two weeks ago was pretty warm."

"You know what I mean!"

I smiled. "Yeah, yeah. I know." I stood up and immediately started packing up. There was no time to spare. Route 105 was an beach laiden territory, and the male brain inside me couldn't wait to see her in her swimsuit again.

-----

"Look! That rock looks suspicious!"

"You heard her, Bagel, land on that island."

My Salamence swooped down and flapped its wings against the ground, coming to a stop. Just like a helicopter, his landing disrupted the sand in circular patterns, as if an alien was leaving a message of warning for us. With a small jerk we touched the ground and the wind stopped rushing through my ears.

"I never get tired of that," Flora exclaimed, unwrapping her arms from around me. "Flying is just too much fun!"

I slipped off the back of my pokemon like a Spheal skating on ice: gracefully until the very end when I come toppling over.

"Return," I called out, lying face up in the sand, sucking Bagel into his spherical home. I stood up. The reflection of the sun off the water surrounding us on almost every side was blinding. I looked away from the sea and towards the cave.

Flora was already poking her head into the cave. "I don't see anything here."

I caught up and looked in as well. Sure enough, it didn't seem to have an defining features at first, and just looked like a plain dome. I investigated the entrance. How strange, the dirt here on the edges appears to be of a slightly different color. It's almost as if there was something blocking this until recently.

"Hey, Elron! I found something!"

I wandered over to where she was. She stood pointing at some bumps on the wall. That wouldn't be anything out of the normal, if it wasn't for the grid-like order that they were in. I recognized it: Braille writing.

I pulled out a notebook from my bag. So he was right, I did need these notes in the end. I flipped to the page where I had hastily crawled the two by three dot patterns down with their meanings. I slowly hunted each pattern from the wall and transcribed their meanings in my notebook.

STOP AND WAIT. WAIT FOR...

I could've sworn that I heard something click within the walls of the cave.

STOP AND WAIT. WAIT FOR TIME TO PASS TWICE.

What does that mean? What good does leaving a message do if you make it all cryptic?! Time to pass twice... Time to pass twice... I figured it out! That means wait two minutes!

The entire cave shook.

Crap! I've totally just waited in the same spot for two minutes! "Let's get out of here!" We ran and made it out just in time to hear a large crash behind us. Dust flew into the air, which instantly became startlingly cold. The dust settled and we stuck a peak into the opening. I wish we hadn't.

Where the Braille had once been there was a hole. A hole that revealed a pitch dark void. A void interrupted by seven glowing yellow orbs, arranged into a plus sign. A plus sign that I heard about in legend. The legend of the Regi Trio.

I felt as if my newfound sweat would freeze there on the spot. I instinctively grabbed Flora's hand and ran like I never had before. Her hand was warm, a special sort of warmth that I wanted to treasure and wouldn't let that deathly coldness touch. I knew better than to take on the legendary pokemon Regice.

I threw out Bagel and hardly waited for him to materialize before hopping on his back. Soon as Flora was on I commanded that we take off. I wasn't the only one terrified. Flora was gritting her teeth and forcing her eyes to stay closed. We landed on a different small island when we felt we were far enough away.

She swallowed then spoke up. "Why must legendary pokemon be so powerful? Why did we have to run into another one?!"

I drew her in and pressed her against my chest. I could feel both our hearts race. "I don't know. I don't know..."

-----

About 5 Months Before

"Get as far away as possible! It's looking like it will blow!"

The townspeople of Lavaridge Town panicked around town. Smoke was billowing from overtop Mt. Chimney, and ash was falling softly raining upon the town. A night-like darkness swept over the land as the sun was blocked by the volcano's breath.

"What's going on?!" I asked the old woman in charge of the inn, who was busy closing blinds and air vents.

"Sounds like a Heatran is rampaging inside Mt. Chimney. You young'uns better get out of here before it erupts!"

"What about you?!"

"Oh, an old woman like me won't be able to make it. I'm just trying to make it as comfortable as possible in here before it happens." She plopped down on a mat, and sat there, accepting her fate.

This is the power of a legendary pokemon. I used to think normal ones were dangerous, but this one may very well level a town or two. I clenched my fist as I remembered hearing about Cinnabar's demise. That too had been the result of a Heatran getting in and running wild. The news wouldn't stop covering it for weeks. The damage was just too insurmountable. I didn't want that to happen to Lavaridge Town again. "Is there any way to stop it?"

"Elron," said Flora, voice trailing off.

"Only way to stop it would be to defeat or calm down the Heatran." The old woman didn't seem to be disturbed anymore. She was completely content. "Don't you worry about me though, I've been on Yveltal's doorstep for quite a while."

I couldn't handle anymore of this. Unlike any time before, our lives were on the line. It felt like my entire composure had changed. I ran out of the inn. A piece of burning soot came down and landed on my shoulder. In pain, I swiped it off. My eyes darted around. There were trainers with large flying pokemon evacuating members of the community. Thank goodness, now we just have to get the old lady to them.

I turned around as Flora caught up to me. I first noticed her, but then my eyes drifted towards something beyond her. The members of the Elite Four were climbing up the slope. Dad was going to try and prevent the catastrophe.

What was this confliction I was feeling? I was being pulled in two opposite directions: one towards my father and one towards Flora and the innkeeper. I didn't want to leave either one behind, and I knew which of the two places I would find my use. Still, this sudden situation had brought up something in me that I didn't know I had: courage.

"Hey, you there! Come on, let's get out of here!" A flying trainer beckoned us to come and ride his Flygon.

"There's an elderly woman in the inn, we can't leave her just yet!" Flora yelled back.

He broke out into a run. "I'll take care of that, you guys get to Flygon first!"

The scale had tipped. One of the ropes pulling on me had snapped. In that moment, the urge to try my best to save the town was overpowering the will to stay back. The woman and Flora were in good hands, I didn't have to worry. I chased after my father.

"Elron!"

At that moment there was a roar from the volcano's mouth. The lava dome pokemon, Heatran, emerged from the mouth and perched itself on the edge.

Without hesitation, the Elite Four called forth their pokemon.

"Salamence!"

"Absol!"

"Dusclops!"

"Walrein!"

In unison, the four trainers called out. "Hyper Beam!!!"

I stopped and stood in awe as white beams shot out from their pokemon and collided with the fiery quadruped. It seemed that they would win for sure, but once the beams dissipated Heatran was still standing.

The top trainers of the region gritted their teeth. This was the sheer force that a pokemon worthy to be called legendary could exert.

Their pokemon now were temporarily incapacitated, and Heatran took the opportunity to rage back. Fire and magma shot from its mouth and hit the pokemon, and it didn't look like they would be able to take any more. I could see that the heat was affecting the trainers, especially father. The only one that could hold out in this fight any longer was the opponent.

In a last ditch effort, I threw forward my strongest pokemon. "Bagel, use Dragonbreath!"

The other trainers turned around and looked startled, but my father looked terrified. "What are you doing?! Get away from here!"

Bagel's pokeball had yet to hit the ground when I heard a familiar voice beside me. "Baguette, Dragonbreath as well!"

A second pokeball flew forward, and they both opened to release our Shelgons. Without a second thought the stubby footed dragons let out as much as they possibly could, and their purple beams hit Heatran.

"What are you doing here?!"

"I'm not going to let my boyfriend get himself killed!"

Did she just say... boyfriend? We'd been travelling together for a long time, and we'd had a few date-like excursions before, but this was the first time I heard that I had earned the title.

I didn't have time for that now though, and my attention was drawn back to the destruction bringer in front of us. The waves stopped, revealing a hardly damaged Heatran, which only looked angrier than before. It gaped its mouth open and energy gathered there in a brilliant ball of white light.

We could tell that it was aimed at us.

We could tell that we had messed up.

We had tried to be heroes, and we had only become courageous idiots. My brain raced for a solution, but found none.

Our Shelgons glanced back at us. Their eyes said, "you're not alone," and they prepared their own attacks.

The Elite Four's pokemon nodded in unison to each other and pulled out every ounce of strength they had yet and did the same.

Heatran's shot launched.

Our pokemon's attacks shot.

Without even thinking, all of us trainers yelled and cheered on our pokemon. Even though it did nothing, I guess that in that sort of moment you feel that that little extra bit of emotional support could change the outcome.

All the attacks collided in midair, and in a blinding flash of light. The light slowly shifted orange, and at this point we knew that we had only held off and weakened the attack.

Two new beams entered the fray.

"We can't ignore a call for help like that, can we, Latias?"

"Not one as clear as that, for it pierced the noise of the entire country, Latios."

Their attacks pushed a hole in the Heatran's attack, then blew forward, obliterating the attack that we had tried so hard to defeat. But they didn't stop there, they continued on and punished our tormentor head-on, knocking it out and back into the volcano.

We were all speechless. Hovering in front of Bagel and I was Latios, and in front of Baguette and Flora was Latias.

"We made it in time. What a catastrophe it would have been if we had not," said the blue and white Eon pokemon telepathically.

"The entire region is in an uproar right now because of this. It would've been much easier to pinpoint the source of the unease if the humans didn't panic so much," stated the red and white jet-like legend.

At a speed incomprehensible, they flew and stopped above the mouth of the volcano and looked down.

"That'll calm her down for a decade or so, don't you think?"

"It should. We'll have to keep an eye on this one though."

They turned back towards us trainers and pokemon.

"We apologize that one of our own has become such a pain for you humans."

"But now that our work here is done, we must once again drift into the shadows. Goodbye humans, and their pokemon. You did well."

And just like that, the two of them flew away, swirling around each other in a dance of red and blue.

That was it. We had struggled so much, but they hardly had to lift a feather to stop what it took so many of us to even attempt to stop. This was the awesome, terrifying, magnificent, and dangerous aspect of the legendaries' power.

A few hours later the volcano's activity died down, the villagers were sent back to their homes, I got scolded, and the damage done was already being worked on. In a few days, you could hardly tell anything had happened. Well, except for one detail that hung in my mind.

"Hey Flora, did you really mean it when you said that I was your boyfriend?" It was an embarrassing question, and I blushed a little, but I had to know.

"Of course," she replied. "You are the Latios to my Latias after all!"

A/N: And that's what happens when you write an entire subplot impromptu XD The pacing may have been bad... Yeah probably was really bad :P (I'll probably go back and work on this one) Also I learned that I've been spelling Salamence wrong this whole time, thanks Google Docs for catching that XD In other news, it's time for things to pick up speed! That's right, buckle up, because things are going to get great!! :D
