Chapter 10: Sports Festival! - Race
Kaminari POV
I get out of bed a little earlier than usual for the sports festival. I change into my clothes and have breakfast unlike usual. I realized that I should at least have some food before a long day.
I quickly shove down my breakfast and walk to school. But something unusual happened. A limousine passed by me and then stopped a little farther forward.
'What? Why is there a limo here?' I think. 'No why did it stop? Is someone amazing getting off here?'
The door opens and comes... Yaomomo. "Oh, I thought so! It was you, Kaminari-san after all. Hop on, we're going the same way after all."
"I feel a difference in class," I say.
"Hm? What are you talking about, please hurry and get on," she says.
I decide to get on and savour the moment knowing it's probably the only time I'll ever ride a limo. "Thank you so much, Yaomomo," I say.
"Oh, it's really no problem," she says.
I don't know why but I decided to tell Yaomomo that I like (L/n). I feel like she has the right to know.
"I told you so. You seemed like you did, how did you not notice until now?" she asks me.
"Ugh, I got it," I say embarrassed. "I'll support you, Yaomomo. I like (L/n) and I want you to go well with Todoroki too-- even though he's not my favourite person. I know this is a super mean thing to say and when I like her but I'm not really those mature people that are able to think 'I wish for the person I love to be happy' from the bottom of my heart. "
"I-I want Shoto to be happy but I feel that he would be happier with me. I want Shoto to be happier with me than with (Y/n)-chan."
I didn't like what she said but more than that, I felt some kind of difference between us. I like (L/n) but she loves Todoroki. Todoroki's also perfect so there's no way she would fall for me instead. Yaomomo, on the other hand, likes Todoroki too and I'm sure he likes (L/n) just as much, but Yaomomo's perfect. She's not like me that has no chance, she looks good walking next to Todoroki, they look meant to be.
"Yeah, it might be true that you are more capable than (L/n) at certain things but that's not her fault! She has a weak body and it's not like she can do anything about it," I say.
"N-no that's not what I mean. Kaminari-san, I think you're misunderstanding something. I've said this before but I don't have a chance at this, I've done the best I could," she says. I try to ask what she means but as if to change the subject she starts talking about (L/n). "O-oh. By the way, about (Y/n)-chan, do you know why her body is weak?"
'What? Wasn't she just born with a weak body?' I think." There's a reason...?" I ask her.
"This is a little personal to her but I don't think she'll mind even if I tell you," she says. "She was born with a strong, healthy body but her quirk was very weak. I don't know if it has anything to do with her mom being quirkless, but her quirk was very weak. Her dad being the 5th best hero was devastated about this truth and he sort of forced her onto doing a quirk surgery."
"Quirk surgery? I've never heard of that..." I say.
"Well, of course, it's not an official thing. Her dad's friend has a quirk that might make it possible so basically they tested it on (Y/n)-chan. His friend was desperate for a person to test it on and her dad was desperate for a strong daughter," Yaomomo explains. "I'll explain this now but Shoto is a result of a quirk marriage. His mom had poured boiling water on his left side when he was little and his dad had sent her to the hospital. I don't think they've met since then."
I'm shocked. Both of them had gone through so many more things than I had ever imagined.
"They're different. They both understand each other. They've gone through similar things in their households," she says. "Not only that, they both need each other. They pull each other up."
We reach the school and get off the limo. I quickly say thank you to the driver before I walk in. I feel dark and heartbroken from the beginning of the day.

(Y/n) POV
"Today is the sports festival! Good luck!" Aizawa sensei says and starts to zip up his sleeping bag.
"Where's the advice?"
"That's it?"
"This is our first time!"
"Your advice is; BE QUIET. That's all," he says and starts to lie down.
'Oh my gosh.' I think. 'That's it?'
"Shoto..." I say, super worried.
He smiles, "Let's go warm-up, (Y/n)."
"Yup!" I say and follow him into one of the training rooms.
We stretch and warm-up for about half an hour and I talk to him about what's been on my mind for a while.
"Shoto, today's a special day. It's the UA sports festival," I say.
"Yeah... I'm aware?" he says confused at what I was trying to say.
"So for today, no matter how far back I am, no matter how tired I look, I'm fine. I slept a lot last night and I'm full of energy today," I say. "This is an important day for you so please promise me this. Don't worry about me today. Forget about me, just for today. You're free from the weight pulling you back, just for today. I won't let you forget about me tomorrow!"
"I won't be able to do that," he starts to say.
"No. You have the power to become the top of the grade, take the chance! I don't want to be what's holding you back. I won't be someone who can help you with training or someone that'll make you stronger but at least I don't want to be the person pulling you back," I say. "Please, Shoto."
"A-alright," he finally says after a long pause. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, obviously! I'm the one who brought this up."
"Thank you so much, (Y/n)," he says.
Soon after that, we are all called to the field so Shoto and I start leaving the training room and head to the field. When we get there, I find Ochako-chan and I decided to talk to her. Once everyone is there, Midnight starts to speak.
"Aright! Welcome to your first ever UA Sports Festival!" Midnight greets us. "I'll get right to it then. The sports festival is divided into 3 different activities! Your first one is an all-grade race! You'll be racing everyone in your grade around the school. You can do absolutely anything as long as you stay on the tracks! I wish you all good luck! Before we start, we'll have Bakugou Katsuki-kun say something as the grade 9 representative."
"Ochako? Why is it Bakugou?" I ask quietly.
"He did get first place in the entrance exam..." Ochako says. "Bakugou-kun's pretty cool after all."
(A/N Okay, I'm sorry for popping by and annoying you but I really wanted to let this out. I put a Kacchako moment at the very end of my previous fanfic but many of the comments were on how they didn't like it. Basically, I chickened out and got rid of it. I didn't like that the last comment they had on my fanfic was 'I hate this ship'. This time, I've put in a few Todomomo scenes that I despise so I decided that I'll stand strong and put a bit of Kacchako in. I'm sorry that kind of turned into a rant...)
I look at Ochako and I can see the admiration in her eyes. I can tell she looks up to him, although I don't know what she sees in that guy that only knows how to shout. Well, I guess he is strong.
"I just want to say, I'm going to win," Bakugou says.
Really. What does she see in that guy?
"O-okay, without further ado, let's get onto the race," Midnight says. "Everyone, get in front of the start tunnel!"
"3, 2, 1, GO"
We all start to run out of the tunnel at once, pushing and shoving. Shoto finds me, grabs my hand and says, "Okay, let's go." He freezes the whole tunnel and almost everyone is stuck. A few people in our class were able to get out soon enough but we were in the lead. Although I'm a little worried that I'll run out of energy, I'm super happy that Shoto's helping me. I run as fast as possible so Shoto doesn't feel like I'm pulling him back.
The zero point villains are the first obstacle we come across. Shoto freezes one in a few seconds and we both run straight through the first obstacle like nothing at all.
I need to catch my breath.
I linger in front of the zero point villains for a little just to steady my breathing, but that was a bad idea.
"(Y/N)!" Shoto screams and I turn around, only to see one of Momo's cannonballs about 2 meters above my head. I had no time to move, I activated my quirk and the cannonball went right through me. 'Safe,' I think.
"(Y/n), are you okay?" Shoto asks.
"Yeah, don't worry. I'm perfectly fine," I reply. "Thanks for the warning though," I feel my legs lose energy. I feel sick. I activated my quirk to abruptly. But I can't let Shoto know, he'll fail if he doesn't go now, I think Bakugou's in front of us.
"Shoto, I'm sorry. I'm a little out of breath. Go on without me, I'll meet you at the goal. Thank you for pulling me along the first bit of the race," I say.
"No, I'm not leaving you behind," he says.
"Leave me behind! Go! Please don't wait for me, you're going to lose!" I half shout. Then I lower my voice, "Shoto, believe me, I'll be fine. Remember what I said before?" I smile the most reassuring one possible.
After a very long second, he agrees in a strained voice and goes on ahead. "You better win!" I yell back and I think he smiled for a faint second. 'After he turns the corner, almost, almost. There. He's gone,' I think. I can put down my act.
I fall to my knees and breathe heavily. I try to calm down. I'm okay, this isn't the first time this has happened. I can go on. One step at a time I go forward. 'Damn, my condition is a lot worse than I thought it would be. I'm really glad I made Shoto go ahead of me,' I think. Many, many people go past me and I slowly start to panic.
And I see one stupid person, running backwards.
"It was you! I thought I saw someone that looked familiar!" Kaminari says.
"Why are you coming back? This is a race! You run forward in a race Kaminari, forward!" I say.
"Why? Isn't it obvious? It looked like you were in pain, so I came back!" He says. He grabs my arm and pulls me along. "Okay if we don't get going, you're going to fail!"
Oh, he's a lot stronger than he seems.
At that moment, I was genuinely happy. Nothing more, nothing less. So instead of complaining, I say two words that I felt from the bottom of my heart.
I say, "Thank you," with the most genuine smile possible.
Kaminari POV
Oh no. I like her. I like her a lot more than I thought I did. I love her smile.
I smile back and pull her along. 'I'm so glad I came back,' I think.
Todoroki POV
I couldn't focus on the race. I kept thinking about (Y/n). Was she okay? Did she really feel alright? Was it okay for me to leave her behind?
Through all of the commentary Present Mic was making only one stood out to me. But that one was like a slap in the face.
"OH! KAMINARI DENKI FROM CLASS 1-A RAN BACK AND IS NOW PULLING (L/N) (Y/N) FROM HIS CLASS ALONG! YEAH, HELP EACH OTHER!"
That distracted me and I ended up 5th place. 'Kaminari? What the heck am I doing?'
(Y/n) POV
We got through all the other obstacles at a decent rate. It was tough, but I had fun. I'm so happy, I feel equal. I feel the same as everyone else. I feel like a normal student.
We finish 24th and 25th, almost dead middle. Although it's not the best, I have no complaints. Absolutely none.
Though I do wish that it was Shoto pulling me along.
As soon as I get on the field, Shoto grabs my arm and pulls me. He looks a little tense.
"Shoto? What's wrong?" I ask.
Without another word, Shoto swiftly faces me and gives a light but meaningful kiss.
