No matter how hard she scrubbed her hands she could not rid them of the blood. It seeped into the fine lines of her palms, soaking deep into the tissue until she could no longer tell the difference between the blood that coursed through her veins and that of the man that laid dead before her.

The gun was heavy and her fingers had trembled on the trigger, her sight almost completely blinded by her frightened tears. Three bullets — one in the left arm, one lodged in the old brick fireplace and another a few millimetres from the heart — a strangled cry and the thud of the gun, muffled by the fall of the man's body, ricocheted off the walls.

The worst was over, they said... but that night was only the beginning for Gwen Sharper.
