Chapter Twenty-Seven

Minutes turned to hours, hours turned to days, days turned to a week and Race didn't leave Elizabeth's side. He was getting very scared and nervous. Elizabeth hasn't gave him a sign of life besides her shoulders and chest moving up and down as she breathed. He wouldn't eat, sleep, or drink. He didn't even smoke a cigar. Race and the boys gave him some money after work to make sure that he didn't go completely broke. Jack and Kathrine checked on him frequently and didn't charge him for rent while he sat in the room with Elizabeth.

"Race? Hey bud. How are you doing?" Kathrine asked Race as she walked over to him and laid a hand on his shoulder. "Not going to respond?" Kathrine waited for a moment as she stared at Race. "Ok, well do you need anything?" She asked trying to persuade him to talk. "I've got to go to the office, I've got some work to catch up on. Bye." Kathrine walked out of the room. She knew the pain of not knowing if a loved one was going to be okay. The stress, the sorrow, and the days of guilt and self deprecation. She felt sorrowful towards Race and Elizabeth. She knew that he knew that everyone supported him and Elizabeth through these times of peril.

Race's hope was diminishing every second of the day. He tried to keep his confidence in Elizabeth's strength high, but he couldn't be strong for the both for them. Her bruises were fading, her cuts were healing, and her leg seemed to be healing. Still, Race was nervous about her health. She still hasn't moved since last week when she opened her eyes for a few minutes and talked to him. He knew that the boys were giving him money and that they were trying to talk to him, but he didn't care. He only cared about Elizabeth. Race was starving and was in need of a drink fast, but he was scared of taking his eyes off of her for a second. The usual night took place. Kathrine would tell him dinner is ready and the boys would drop by to give him a few cents from their work day and they tried to talk to him, he wouldn't respond.

The clock on the wall now read 10:59 pm. Race was falling asleep. He would never admit it, but he was tired, hungry, and scared. Race was as stubborn as they come. He never wanted to be considered weak and a baby. "Elizabeth. Please. Wake up soon." Race said with his head in his hands. "Race? Why are you crying?" Elizabeth said as Race sat up in his chair.

"I'm not crying. How are you?" Race said as he cupped Elizabeth's face in his right hand.

"Better. I can move my leg now!" Elizabeth replied as she bent her knee in the air.

    "Good."

    "Are you ok?"

    "Yeah, I'm fine."

"No you're not. You haven't eaten have you?"

    "Maybe."

Elizabeth sat up on the bed and turned to face him. She patted the spot next on the bed next to her. Race took the hint and sat beside her. He wrapped his right arm around her and pulled her close. She rested her head on his shoulders. Elizabeth realized that he looked pale and very thin. "You didn't leave. Did you?" She asked as she noticed the jar full of coins that sat on the dresser. "Maybe." Race smirked. "I didn't want to leave you." He then placed a kiss on the top of her head. Elizabeth blushed.
