Chapter One

Days have passed after President Theodore Roosevelt closed the refuge and promised to enforce child labor laws across the country. Kathrine finally had her dream boy, with her father's approval of course. Just because the refuge closed doesn't mean the jail didn't. Her father gave her a job at The World and the title of head journalist. Her world seemed perfect.
A few more days passed as usual. She woke up in her bed next to Jack at their own apartment, where some of the Newsies stayed will them for free, he'd kiss her on her head and get up to leave for his new job as a comic artist and she'd begin to get dressed.
Her favorite pink dress was as the dry cleaners so she decided to wear her blue and lilac colored dress. After about an hour she was in her dress and had her perm fixed up and primed to perfection.
Kathrine then walked out of her bedroom to make sure that all of the Newsies were out at the gate ready to buy their papers. After checking each room, she began to make herself a cup of coffee, eat a bread roll, and sit down at the kitchen table. There was a large window in the kitchen that overlooked the bustling city below. Kathrine then grabbed her coat before locking the door and going to her father's office to begin the long work day.
Kathrine walked through the huge wooden doors with a W branded in the middle of them, walked up the grand staircase, and eagerly began to walk to her office that had the words Ms Pulitzer Chief  Editor and Writer. Seeing that sign always filled Kathrine with determination to do the best job that she can possibly do.
She opened the door and noticed Jack sitting at her desk. He looked totally different from the torn up, Newsboy that she fell in love with only a year ago. He was wearing a freshly pressed suit colored a charcoal grey, with a pair of black trousers, and brown leather shoes. His hair was slicked back, he looked... older. "Hey Kat" Jack said with a smile. Kat was his nickname for her. " Brought you the morning pap fresh off the press." He motioned to a newspaper on her desk. "Thanks honey." Kathrine replied blushing. Kathrine loved it when Jack called her Kat it made her feel special. She began to walk towards her desk to see her story on the front page. " Nice job Kat, front page!" Jack said as he looked over her shoulder. " Yeah I can't believe that I got front page. Mr. Smith's article was written remarkably too." Kathrine replied without a smile on her face. "Ooo I love your illustrations in this one especially." She pointed to a picture of a girl wearing a puffy dress. "Oh come on Kat give yourself some credit. Front page news! This is awesome!" Jack exclaimed " You're right. Oh one question. Why aren't you at your desk?" Kathrine asked playfully. " Correct I'm not at my desk because.." Jack paused "I forgot to say...I love you?" Jack said half asking. "Correct." Kathrine replied. "Love you." He said "Love you too." She replied as he began to walk out of her office. Kathrine then put the newspaper aside to start typing a new article about the rising dangers of street crimes in New York.
