Lesson 1 - Human: Understanding the complexities of emotions.
A human is a complex organism, and it is still to today that the subject of human emotions are being debated over. Are humans capable of feeling what is deemed, called, and generally accepted by human societies as, 'emotions', through physical or spiritual means? Though it is not as complex as the never ending argument and debate over whether a wafer is a cookie or is a cookie a wafer or should they even be lumped together at all, it is still very complex. More complex than the argument over a basic white bitch and an orange. And thus the stream of questions about human emotions such as:
What is a human? Is it a body that has a certain structure and certain features? If so then why do all humans look different? Is a human an individual who is able to communicate to others? Is a human an individual who has enhanced learning capabilities? Or is a human an individual who can feel emotions?
What are emotions and where do we draw the boundaries of being a human? Why is it that we are able to feel certain emotions that other species can't? Why do we have the capabilities of feeling those emotions? Why do we sometimes not feel those emotions? Why do we feel so fixated on certain emotions and not feel the others?
Who are we to judge what we are feeling? If we cannot feel what others are feeling then how do we know what emotions are? How do we know what we feel? How do we empathise and sympathise? How do we attach a label to those emotions? How do we not mistake happiness for saddness? How are we so sure that we feel because we feel and not because we think we feel them?
There is no certainty when it comes to human emotions other than the case of you feel what you feel. Even then there will be other emotions that can cause you to be befuddled towards what you feel. Thus making you question many other things, such as love, which will be discussed in further detail in another lesson. But continuing where we left off, there are emotions that will make one question about their emotions. For example, one may have lived their whole life believing an apple is an apple and someone suddenly proclaims the apple to be a rose. And yet one believes the rose to be the label of another object. Thus the feeling of confusion and disbelief that one may experience in such a circumstance. The unnamed emotion, if even agreed to be an emotion, of knowing something, may suddenly be wiped away or overwritten by another emotion because one somewhat feels the emotion of belief towards such proclamations, or any other emotions. Yet one may also be indifferent and brush such words off without even thinking about it. And yet why feel such emotions? Water in the English language is simply water, and yet it is a completely different word in another, in Spanish it is agua, and in Vietnamese it is nước. With that said why does it seem unnatural to call an apple a rose, when it is deemed natural to have many languages? Why is it then that such emotions are felt? Why can such emotions be overwritten? Why can certain emotions be felt in certain circumstances? Why does one question one's emotions via other emotions? Does one truly question their emotion or is it that one only believes they are questioning their emotion? Why does one feel emotions? Is one born with emotions or does one develop emotions?
Why is it that humans can't seem to fathom the things that they are closest to? Emotions, they are things that everyone experiences and lives with, and yet no one can fathom. They are such things that the human race does not have general consensus for. Why is it that we more often than not feel confusion, ironically the feeling of not knowing what to feel, for the subject of emotions and feelings? It is perhaps the area of emotions that make humans one of the most complex beings that we think we are. But in the end, who is a human to judge what had been, still is and will be judged?
