Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Evan and Nathan were in the kitchen. Evan was asking endless questions about all the appliances and Nathan was trying to make pasta while still answering all her questions.

"What's this?" Evangeline questioned while pointing to the microwave.

"That's the microwave. It heats up your food." He answered that sparing a glance at the microwave in question before going back to stirring the pasta.

Evan stepped closer to it and pressed one of the buttons. It beeped and started glowing on the inside and whirring. She yelped and jumped back.

"What's it doing?" She grabbed a nearby towel and help it in front of her like a weapon. "Don't try anything, microwave." She hissed out the last word and started smacking the microwave with the towel.

"Evan," Nathan sighed, "stop trying to kill the microwave."

"It won't die!" She shrieked and started hitting the microwave even harder. The microwave then stopped glowing and started beeping repeatedly. She stopped trying to murder the microwave with the towel, but still held it infront of her like a shield.

"What's it doing now?" She stammered, "Is it going to explode?"

"No, it's not going to explode." Nathan looked up from his pasta and waked over to the microwave. He opened the microwave and the beeping stopped, then closed it again.

"There you go, the threat has left. Now let me make my pasta." He yawned, then went back to making his pasta. Evan put down the towel and started looking around at the house. The walls were a light beige color and the was a simple wood flooring. There were some appliances such as the demonic microwave, the refrigerator, the stove, and many others she didn't know the name to. She started to walk around the kitchen and opened some drawers. The first one had some boxes labeled with odd names such as Cheerios and Apple Jacks. There were others she did recognize such as chicken soup and bread, but even they had odd logos on them and weird pictures.

She wandered out of the kitchen and saw a grey box on a table. It seemed to have a screen on it. She pressed one of the buttons and people talking appeared on the screen.  She yelped and dashed away from it. This box had souls in it!

"Nathan!" She called. "Were you aware that your box has trapped souls in it?"

Nathan trudged into the living room. What was it now? He had already been interrupted enough and he was almost done with his pasta. He was also cranky from being up at six, driving for a hour, hiking with a twenty pound backpack for multiple hours, flying, and driving the way back. He was also rather ticked off from having to leave behind his backpack. Maybe he could go back and get it sometime this week. Or he could call the park services. Yeah, he'll do that later tonight.

"What do you mean my box has souls in it?" She was pointing to the television and staring at it.

"Your box. See the people? Those are souls. Trapped in this cage. We have to set them free." She rushed over to a piece of paper and started to draw on it. She then picked it up and shoved it into Nathan's hands.

"Here, put this on the box and transfer your energy into it."

"Evan. That's a television set. Not a box that has trapped souls in it."

"But-"

"No. No trapped souls. It's playing a movie. Those people are still very alive and well."

"What's a movie?"

"A movie is where they take videos of people and put them together to make a story."

"What's a video?"

"A video is a moving photo."

"Whats a-"

"Moving drawing. I said drawing."

"Ok. So their souls aren't trapped in there?"

"No."

"Good, it's hard to get trapped souls out."

"I'm gonna go back to my pasta." She answered with silence and sat on the couch. He quietly returned to the kitchen.

As he finished his cooking he thought about Evan. She was very curious, but not very easy going. She also was very behind on modern items. At least she knew what a car was, but beyond that she was hopeless. She also liked using random latin words when she was talking.

He poured the pasta into bowls and put some marinara sauce on them. He grabbed two forks from the counter and stabbed one into each bowl. Grabbing on bowl in each hand, he migrated to the living room and sat down on the couch. Evangeline was immersed in the movie. She had the facial expression you would imagine that a cat stalking a red dot would have.

"Here, I brought you some pasta." He startled Evan out of her trance.

"Huh?"

"Pasta. Food. You have that, right?" He offered her a bowl.

"Yes, we have pasta." She said as she took the bowl. She grabbed the fork and took a large bite. "Deus meus, this is delicious!" She inhaled her portion in a matter of seconds.

"Wow," Nathan expressed, "you ate that really fast. Even faster than Matthew, and he's the eating champion."

She shrugged. "I guess it has something with not haven eaten for a few months, and who is Matthew?"

"You haven't eaten in a few months?"

"Yes, angels are able to go without food for a much longer time than humans. Anyways, who's Matthew?"

"Matthew? He's my roommate. The one at a conference in Florida. I thinks it's some sort of cat conference. Speaking of cats, where's Snuffles?"

"Who is Snuffles?"

"She's Matthew's cat. He found her on the streets and took her in. She has a knack for finding the oddest places to nap."

"One second. I think I can see her aura."

Oh yeah. Evan has her weird aura vision. Nathan is still not sure how that works.

Evan got up from the couch and slowly wandered into the kitchen. She looked around a bit before pointing to the microwave.

"Snuffles is behind the demonic microwave."

Sure enough, Snuffles was behind the microwave.

"Good, I was worried that she had escaped. She likes to escape every once in awhile."

They went back to the couch after they found Snuffles. Evan had gotten another bowl of pasta and Nathan was finishing his first. They continued watching the movie.

"You know, this video is pretty accurate when it comes to the magic part." Evan stated as she took another bite of the pasta.

"Hmm?" Nathan questioned as he swallowed his pasta. "In what ways?"

"They use wands, which are simplified versions of staffs. They also use simple latin words for their incantations. Although using just one word would only work on a staff, it is very close to how a real mage would use magic."

Huh. Who would've known that Harry Potter was somewhat real.

She commented on the magic practices as the movie continued. They also got multiple helpings of pasta as they watched. Nathan was happy he made a large amount. Evan ate nearly the whole thing.

When the movie ended, Nathan showed Evan where she was going to be sleeping. His roommate was out, so Evan could just use his room.

"This is the bed. You sleep on it. Don't touch any of his stuff."

"Thanks, but I know what a bed is." Evan regarded as she sat on the bed. She stretched and laid on the bed like a cat.

"Wait, you might want to take a shower." Now that he looked at her again, she was filthy. She looked like she had jumped into a mud puddle.

"What's a shower?" Nathan sighed.

"Come on, I'll show you."

He opened a door that led to a bathroom.

He gestured to the shower. "This is the shower." He touched the knob. "You turn this to make water come out." He touched the soap. "This is soap. You use it to clean your body." He pulled out a washcloth. "You get his wet then put the soap on it." He grabbed the shampoo. "This is shampoo. You rub it in your hair to clean your hair. Got it?"

She nodded.

"I'll have some clean clothes outside the door." He exited and went to his own room. He opened his closet and started rummaging through it. There it is! His cousin had visited and left some of her clothes a few weeks ago. She seemed the same size as Evan. He would of sent the clothes back to his cousin, but she moved to England and it cost a lot to send this amount of clothes to her. He pulled the bag out of his closet and walked over to Matthew's room. He heard flaps and ruffles coming from the bathroom. He put the bag down outside the door and called, "Hey Evan. The clothes are outside the door. Try not to kill the bathroom with your wings."
