Chapter 3

This mage was a lifesaver. He might not think himself a mage, but he is one. Drawing a ruin correctly on the first try. Unthinkable. Making the rune powerful enough to completely heal my wing? Next to impossible. Turing the darkness back with a simple healing rune? Who's came up with this idea? They need to go to the insane asylum because that's impossible! But against all odds, this human did it.

It has been so long since she had seen anything besides auras. The colors were blinding, but she still stared at the shades of gray. The rocks, the mold, the light from his flashlight; I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life.

There was one thing that stood out. The human who had given me this wonderful gift. He had fluffy, light brown, hair and tan skin. His hazel eyes were slightly too close together and had thin eyebrows arched above them. His nose was tilted upwards the slightest bit and his ears sticking out a bit.

He looked at me with concern.

"Wait, you couldn't see?" He said this with surprise and concern.

"Ehh, it depends on how you look at it. I could still read auras, but that's more like a sixth sense." Seeing auras was like having another layer of vision. Kind of like when you think of tv, Doctor Who comes to mind. You would see the Tardis, but not see it. It's hard to explain.

"How did you survive?" The answer to that question was one she'd rather leave undescribed. The methods one uses to shield herself from the light are often things best left unknown. Although, the human probably wouldn't stop pestering her until she answered.

"The creatures that live in the shadows can be very helpful if you know how to persuade them."It was the most honest answer she could give. As she expected, the human seemed very uncomfortable with her answer and quickly changed the topic.

"Introductions." He stammered out. "I don't know you name yet. I'm Nathan Strider. And you?"

"My name is Evangeline, but everyone calls me Evan. Evangeline is a mouthful to say."

"Nice to meet you Evan."

"The pleasure is all mine Nathan."

They sat there for a while, studying their new acquaintances.

"So I'm a Mage now?" He fiddled with his fingers and avoided eye contact when he asked this.

"Yeah. You're a Mage now. Congrats!" She seemed utterly uninterested when she said this, even though when she congratulated him she waved her hands around sarcastically.

Another silence fell over them after that.

"Wait, I see something." She could see faint auras approaching. To be more specific, faint dark auras approaching.

"I don-"

"Shut up. We need to leave. Now. " Evan interrupted him with the urgency of a charging rhino. "You don't want to get cornered with the daemones."

Nathan was very confused. Evan had introduced herself, confirmed him a Mage, and claimed there were things called daemons somewhere. They sounded bit like the Latin word for demon. Now that he thought about it, the words he used to draw the rune sounded exactly like Latin words. Guess it turns out that taking those Latin classes actually paid off!

"Hey! We need to move!" She grabbed his hand and started to run out of the cave.

"Wait! I need to get my backpack!"

"There's no time!" He was forced to leave his backpack behind. Oh well, there go all his camping materials.

She tugged Nathan out of the cave with surprising forcefulness. Outside it was dark. He must've spent more time down there than he previously thought. He could only see by the light of his flashlight that he managed to keep with him this whole time.

"Hold on tight." She spread her wings and took off into the air. Flying would have been a wonderful experience. The wind in your face, the exhilaration. Any normal person would have been thrilled at the prospect to flying. Nathan, not so much. Having mild aviophobia, the fear of heights, he didn't really like flying. At all. His reaction to being in flight wasn't that good.

"PUT ME DOWN NOW! I'M GOING TO DIE! PLEASE!" Nathan screamed like a little girl.

"Fine, let me just find the parking lot. That's what humans call it, right?" Evan rolled her eyes and started flying leisurely in the sky. It must've been difficult because Nathan was having his own little panic attack.

"Yes, it is. Put me down. Now." He seemed to of had calmed down but was really pale and his voice was bordering on hysterical.

"Fine. I see it now." She swerved into a downward curve as she headed towards the parking lot. She looked very happy at the time. On the other hand, Nathan looked like he was going to barf.

She lightly touched down on the pavement of the parking lot and released Nathan from her hold. He collapsed to the ground and started grinning madly and hugging himself.

"You know, if you hug yourself any tighter you're going to crush your ribs, and trust me. It would hurt." Evan looked at him with amusement. "Come on, we don't have much time before the daemones find us. Which one of these are yours?" She gestured to the cars.

"The silver truck. Here." He walked over to a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado and unlocked the shotgun door. (Luckily his keys and phone were in his jacket pocket so they weren't left behind.)

"After you mi'lady," he said dramatically as he opened the door and did and over exaggerated bow. Evan rolled her eyes at his antics, but allowed a small smirk to come on her face as she entered the car. He entered the driver's side and started up the car.

"Where should we go?" Nathan asked.

"Don't you have a place of residence we could go to? Somewhere preferably where there aren't any other people?"

"Sure, I have a small house I share with a roommate. Will that be acceptable?"

"Will your roommate be there?"

"Nah, he's on a vacation in California for a convention. He won't be back until next week."

"Ok, let's go there." He started up the car and made his way back home. What neither of them noticed were the pairs of red eyes staring from the woods.
