Twenty-Four
"What do you think, Char? Should I tell him?" Amelie propped the phone between her ear and her shoulder as she leaned down to zip up her boots.
"Yes, Am, yes! He so clearly loves you too," Charlotte said.
"Maybe, Char I don't know. It's just so early to say things like that. We've only been dating a little over a month. I don't want to scare him off," Amelie said.
"Didn't you meet when you were like ten? So you've really had thirteen years of buildup for this, not one month," Charlotte said.
"I know but-" there was a knock on the door. Amelie began whispering, "I'm worried he'll think I was in love with him all those years ago and it will change all the memories we had together when he came to visit me." She walked into her bedroom for one last minute of privacy. "Don't you think that it will change the way he sees things if he assumes I loved him then? Like then it becomes kind of creepy that he wanted to be friends and I wanted more for all those years."
"Stop, Amelie. You're overthinking this. Just calm down. If it feels right, then tell him. If you're still too nervous then you wait. It will be okay either way," Charlotte said.
"Okay," said Amelie. "He's here, I'm gonna go. Talk to you later."
"Have a nice night, hun. I miss you!" Charlotte said.
"Miss you too. See you in a week." Amelie hung up the phone and ran to the front door.
She stopped in front of the door and took a deep breath to calm down her nerves. She had seen Adrien almost every day this week except Monday when he had had his meeting at the gym, but she was constantly nervous that her confession might slip out of her lips at any moment with him.
Her two confessions, she thought. Her true feelings for him and the fact that she had spent every lunch break this week training with the man he had told her to stay away from. She shuddered at thinking about Adrien finding about Theo.
There was another knock on the door. "Am, is everything okay in there?" Adrien asked. She had been making him wait for a while.
Amelie took another deep breath and opened the door. Adrien stood there in a suit jacket and button down shirt, smiling from ear to ear. In his hands were a bouquet of roses.
"Adrien you're too sweet. You didn't have to do that," Amelie said. He took a step forward and wrapped his arm around her back.
"I know. I just wanted to remind you how much I like you," he said.
Amelie felt her face burn red. She fought to clamp her lips together to keep the secret of her feelings barred inside.
"Thank you," she said and kissed him.
They sat at dinner hand in hand. Every minute or so his fingers would rub the back of her hand and her body would break out in happy shivers.
"You okay? You seem quiet tonight," Adrien said.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just had a lot going on this week and haven't had much time to be alone with my thoughts. I think my brain is just rebelling and telling me I need to take a breather over the weekend," she said.
He smiled softly.
"I'm just glad it's Friday," she said.
"Me too," Adrien's thumb grazed the back of her hand again, "Maybe I can help you with some of that stress later?" He said and raised his eyebrows.
She smirked, "You know I was going to take a bath, but if you're nice I might let you join me."
"Hey I brought you flowers!" he exclaimed.
She laughed, "It takes a lot more to earn my love, baby."
His smile faded. "Really?"
"Really what?" she asked, confused by his sudden change of attitude.
"Nothing. Never mind," he said.
The waiter came by at that moment with the check and they were able to pay and leave the restaurant without continuing the conversation. On the walk back, Amelie broke the silence.
"Really what, Adrien? Please," she said and put her arm around his back, pulling him in tightly to her. "Please tell me."
He sighed and looked away from her. Then leaned down and kissed the top of her head. She nuzzled his shoulder when he pulled away.
"You said it would take a lot more to earn your love. And well....I...." he paused and looked away from her, "I think I already love you."
Amelie loosed the breath that she had been holding in tight. "Oh Adrien," she said and stopped walking. She took both of his hands in her and looked straight up at him. He avoided her gaze. "I love you too."
"What?" he exclaimed. He pulled her to him and crashed his mouth down onto hers. "Asante san, Amelie I love you so much."
"I know," she said and laughed quietly. "It feels so good to say it."
"It does. I can't believe it....after all this time. We got here. We're together," he whispered in amazement and pulled her to him again. She melted into his embrace and rubbed her hands comfortingly along his back.
He kissed her lips once more then pulled back to look at her face. He leaned down and kissed her again, this time trailing kisses down her face and across her neck. "I love you here, and here, and here," he said, repeating the words with each kiss. She threw her head back and moaned.
"Let's go back," she said and squeezed his hand. He planted one more kiss on her lips and pulled back.
That night they lay in bed, tangled up in each other. Adrien's hand was lacing through Amelie's hair giving her a scalp massage and she could barely keep her eyes open.
"You know," she said, "I desperately used to wish I was talented at art when I was a kid."
"Why?" he asked, his hand not slowing its movement.
"It wasn't actually to do art. It was so that I could draw an accurate picture of you to look at for the times you weren't there. I mean later in the years I could have taken a picture, but I liked the idea of rendering you from my own memories. So that it was the you in the moment I remembered. Instead, all I had were the letters I wrote for myself," she remarked sadly.
He leaned down and kissed her. She closed her eyes and savored the feeling of his lips.
"I love you," he said. "It just feels nice to say that to you."
"I love you too, Adrien," she said.
"Can I see the letters sometime?" he asked.
"Maybe," she said. "They're more like journal entries so it would feel weirdly private, but maybe," she said and reached up and kissed him.
"Do you have one for that day I showed you eugeste?" he asked.
She furrowed her brows. "Eugeste? What's that?" she asked.
"You know, water magic. That's the name in our language, Thamot. All of the types of magic have a more specific word in that language. Sorry I thought I told you that. Water magic is called Eugeste," he said.
"Oh," she said, simply. What had his question been?
"Oh yeah, the letter from that day is one of the best ones. I actually love reading over my description of magic," she said.
"I would love to read it," he said.
"Um, it's still pretty personal. I don't know," she said.
"I won't judge you. I just am curious. I was there that day too. I want to see it from your perspective," he said. "I promise," he kissed her forehead, "no judgements."
She bit her lip.
"I don't really want to, Adrien. Maybe another time but I don't feel ready to show you yet," she said. "You understand right?"
"No, not really if I'm being honest. I love you. I would show you anything you asked," he said. His arm unwrapped from around her and he scooted himself to the other side of the bed, leaving her side cold from his absence.
She turned to look at him. "Really? That's not fair, Adrien. I let you have your privacy for certain things."
"I just don't understand. How can you really love me and not trust me? That's hardly fair. It's not anything harmful. I just want to see the letters," he said.
Her face softened and she looked up at the ceiling, contemplating.
She felt the mattress dip beside her and Adrien wrapped his arms around her once more, pulling her into his warm embrace.
"Just one letter, baby," he kissed her cheek and lightly stroked the spot where he had kissed her.
"Okay," she said and sat up. She slid off the bed and pulled the box out from beneath it. She placed the box on the bed and started sifting through the papers until she found the one from the date she was looking for.
"Excuse the silly handwriting. I was on the train when I wrote most of this," she said in a monotone.
"Come here," Adrien said and gestured for her to sit next to him. She put the box on the ground and lay down next to him. She released a frustrated sigh. He pulled her close and leaned her head down on the crook of his shoulder.
He set the papers down fifteen minutes later after having turned them over and reread certain parts multiple times.
"I love how beautiful you are inside," he said. "I wish I had known how much magic meant to you at that time. If I had known or understood, I never would have kept it from you like I did," he said.
"Really?" she asked.
"Really," he said. "I'm sorry. I should have told you from the beginning. Reading that really helped me understand."
She picked up the papers and carefully put them back on the ground next to the bed, then jumped on top of Adrien and kissed him. "I love you so much," she said.
"I love you too, baby," he replied.
