Alice's POV
Everything's set to celebrate my 19th birthday. Vanessa did a wonderful job, helping me organize this party. I would be lost without her, since she manages to do everything under schedule, while I am a last minute person. The common room is decorated with some party stuff, but nothing too extreme. Vanessa wanted to buy everything related to party at the store, but I gave her many eyerolls, saying it was not my style. Thank God Nina didn't join us. I don't know if I would be able to win this war.
The common room is quite big for a party and I invited many people from campus. Classmates, people I met at the gym, at parties etc. Me and Vanessa made a buffet with drinks and we bought pizza and chips for the guests. Vanessa also ordered my birthday cake from Chloe, the girl who can do magic with chocolate and she also hinted, that a surprise is waiting for me. I can't wait to find out.
The first guests start to make their entrance. I have to say they are quite punctual. It took quite some time for me and Vanessa to get ready and thankfully, we weren't late. I wanted to look really elegant and hot tonight, since it's my day. I put on my new blue dress, that I bought with Vanessa. It's strapless, it hugs my waist perfectly and becomes airy on the thighs. It has lace at the end and it's just above the knees. Sweet and sexy! I chose my favourite black high heeled booties with lace as shoes, a beautiful necklace and my usual bracelets, that I never take out, as accessories. My light brown hair is falling on perfect loose curls until my chest.
As I am greeting a guest after another, I see Joseph and Sophie entering the room. Joseph is wearing black trousers, a blue shirt and a black jacket. His hair is like always messy intended, but I think he has taken care of it more than usual. His bangs fall perfectly on his forehead without hiding his hazel eyes with blue touches, which are being pointed out by his shirt colour. He's marvelous and I can't take my eyes off of him. He's walking with confidence, always sure about every step he takes and his carefree style is always present. I am gawking like hypnotized, until he arrives in front of me.
"Happy birthday Alice!" he flashes me one of his beautiful smiles and I hadn't realized that I was biting my lip. He leans closer and gives me a kiss on my cheek. His lips burn the area they touched and my heart goes to 200 beats per seconds, just like that.
"Thanks Joseph!" I flash a smile to him as well, and I think he's checking me out from head to toe.
"Hello Alice, Happy 19th birthday!" Sophie smiles next to him, but then approaches me for a hug, which I gladly accept. I haven't noticed Sophie, until she spoke to me. Joseph had my eyes captivated. She's wearing black skinny jeans, a black button up, and a pair of high heels.
"Thank you Sophie!" I grin at her. "I am so glad you both made it!" I look once at Sophie and then, at Joseph.
"There was no way to miss this. Not to mention, your wish is fulfilled now!" Joseph looks at me, with a playful attitude and I eyeroll. He just can't resist, can he?
"Yes, thank you for inviting us, Alice! Here is your present." Sophie says and hands me over a bag.
"Thanks a lot!" I take the bag, beaming at both of them. I kind of expected Joseph to stretch his hand, and give me something as well, but he doesn't. I guess this present is from both of them. I try to hide my disappointment. I don't know why I expected with such anticipation, Joseph's gift. I feel so stupid right now. What's more natural for him and his bff to share the expenses, in order to buy me a nice and apparently, expensive gift.
"I hope you like it, I tried to think of the things that you would like, which was a bit tricky, because I don't know you that long, and I can never choose good gifts." Sophie says shyly.
"I am sure I will love it!" I wink at her and she smiles.
"Hey Joss, dude, come over here man!" Colin, a friend from gym, calls Joseph. Who is this person? Campus celebrity? Everybody knows him.
"Hey Colin! Sorry girls, but I go PRing!" Joseph smirks and leaves our side.
"Does everyone know Joseph?" I wonder out loud.
"Well, he is 2 years older...it seems logical. Plus, he is a Leo. These people are way too talkative." Sophie shakes her head, done with Joss's comment.
"So how are you, Sophie? I haven't seen you, since the talk." I give her a meaningful look. Sophie of course chokes on her own saliva.
"Umm...yes. Yes we haven't... I mean we... you and me haven't seen each other... not that Robin and I had ...you know." she says panicky.
"Hey, no need to panic! I hope I helped you somehow. I may blurt things out bluntly and without thinking, but I can assure you I mean well." I give her a warm smile. I hope our talk had an impact on her. I forget sometimes how delicate Sophie can be, and I speak with words, that she's not comfortable with.
"Yes, yes you did... I.... ummm... I went shopping... you know..." she leaves the sentence unfinished.
"Really?" I exclaim and she nods, a bit guilty. "I can assure you Robin won't be disappointed. I think she won't be able to take her hands off of you!" I smile mischievously. Then, I see a blond woman entering the dorms. It's Robin. Sophie spotted her as well, and I see her drooling, like a teenager. It's hilarious. Her jaw is dropped and she can't take her eyes off of her. Robin approaches us with a smile pinned on her face, wearing a rather revealing dress. Boy, Sophie is in trouble. Ro is always cheery and ready to have fun.
"Hey, queen of the day! Happy birthday!" she hugs me and then kisses my cheek. "From the bottom of my heart." She hands me over her present as well, and winks at me.
"Thanks so much, Ro! Wow! You're so hot! I was wondering why the temperature rose, out of the sudden!" I touch Robin and I pretend like I'm burning from her skin. Sophie is still looking at Ro, not commenting.
"Why, thank you, your Highness. You look good as well. Fabulous." Then, Robin focuses on Sophie. "Hello, babe." She smiles at Sophie jolting up.
"Hey Ro... you look good." she tells her and then looks at me.
"I think she means breathtaking!" I chime in simpering. Come on girl, you can do better than that. Your expression is so giving you away. I hope I don't look like Sophie, when I look at Joseph, because I am totally screwed.
"Umm... yes... right." Sophie starts fidgeting and Ro giggles. Then, she moves closer to her, and gives her a small peck on her cheek.
"She might as well be talking about you, babe. You are stunning." Ro has game. Sophie blushes in an instant.
"I will be drawn from your treacle, girls! Get a room!" I tease them. Their eyes devour each other.
"Nah... I am a gentlewoman, my Queen. Sophie needs to be courted in the right way. All in good time." Ro winks and brings her hand on Sophie's back. Ro is such a romance trash. Truth be told, she didn't strike me as one. Another truth is the relationship that these two have makes me a little jealous, but in a good way. I wish I could have someone, like they have one another. Not that I mind being single, but who doesn't want somebody by their side, sharing a connection like that. My glance unwillingly falls on Joseph and I take it back right away. That's the person, who is the most inappropriate to be thinking in this kind of way and yet, my eyes were slipping on him, through my whole conversation with the girls.
"Girls, I don't want to hold you! I will catch up with you later! Have fun!" I beam at them.
"Yes, your majesty! Go do your thing." Ro bows playfully and Sophie shakes her head.
Vanessa's POV
Everything is ready for Alice's big night! We spent all week planning every single detail for tonight and I hope she has a great time! It's pretty early but since I am on co-hosting duty I am already down at the playroom which we have decorated properly for the birthday party. There aren't many people here yet. Well, not people that I know. Alice being her social self has invited many classmates or other students who she has met at the gym, at parties or at other occasions. When I spot Sophie standing awkwardly at the side of the room, I immediately approach her. She mustn't know anyone either.
"Hi Sophie!" I wave at her even if I am only one step away and then go for a hug.
"Hello, Vanessa, you look nice" Sophie comments after the embrace ends.
"Thank you, you look wonderful too!" I smile at her. "I am sure Robin found your total black outfit sexy!" I whisper and her face lights up.
"She did say I look gorgeous, but she does so every time." she giggles. "Is everything ready? Do you need help?"
"No, everything is under control." I nod feeling proud about it. "Where is Robin really?"
"Oh, she went to the bathroom to check her make-up. It got a bit messed up... you know." she lowers her head, shyly.
"Aha, I know!" I raise my eyebrows playfully at her. "How are things between you two? You know... Has anything happened?" Sophie has been thinking about taking the next step to her relationship with Robin for quite some time now and our movie night the other day made me see how much Sophie really loves Robin and how much of a lady Robin is since she hasn't pressured Sophie at all about this big next step.
Sophie's cheeks redden instantly, just like they did on our sleepover. "I have been thinking a lot about it and I think maybe it could happen today. I mean if Robin wants as well, but I am very nervous, you have no idea, I know we talked about it the other day, but it's making me extra anxious. How do I say it?" she really looks nervous. I can tell by the way she is playing with her fingers.
"Sophie, take a big breath." I rest my hands on her shoulders. "You and Robin are together for quite some time now, there's no need to feel worried or embarrassed about anything. You'll see, everything will come so naturally."
"You are right, I know, Robin is more than considerate." she inhales and exhales loudly. "Thank God I didn't have this conversation with Joss. He would probably say something like the 'use protection' jokes."
"I think he would definitely say that." I chuckle. "But only to make you loosen up a little bit. I wish I could come up with some kind of joke but nothing comes to my mind at the moment." A brief laugh escapes from her lips. "But you'll see whenever it happens, it will just be right."
"Yeah... I hope so. Enough about me, what have you been up to?" she asks me, resting her hand on my shoulder.
"You know, the usual and expecting things a student should be doing at the start of a new semester." I shrug and Sophie nods in understanding. I think me and her are the only two people I know who would really get what I mean by saying this. "We've also had the preparations for Alice's birthday party, it took a lot of our time but I am satisfied with the result. I have also spent more time at the paper. There have been some little changes and I have taken more responsibilities."
"Vanessa, you did an amazing job with the party, and I am more than certain you will do great at the paper too, so don't worry!" she exclaims. She is so supportive and I really appreciate it.
"That's what Ashton keeps on telling me. I just don't want to let him down, you know?" I shrug.
"Well, Ashton is right!" she remarks and then she makes a weird grimace. "He is also very kind and very interesting. A guy like him could be perfect for you Vanessa!" she says clapping her hands.
"You think?" I chortle at this comment of hers. "The truth is that Emma has been brainwashing me with this idea, she really liked Ashton when she met him on Halloween. But I hate to break it to both of you, matchmakers. Ashton is interested in someone."
"Oh, no, that's too bad, he would be great for you." she brings her index finger on her chin. "I don't know any other guys, besides Joss and Nathan, but Robin for sure knows people. Do you want me to ask her if she has a friend good enough for you?"
"Oh no, thanks but there's no need for that." I give her an awkward smile. I don't feel that comfortable when people try to set me up. That was how I got into my first 'relationship' and I got my first 'boyfriend'. Shane Moore stole my first kiss but definitely didn't sweep me off of my feet. That only happened when...
"You know better, but for the record, being with someone that loves you is awesome." Sophie distracts me from my inner thoughts. "The emotional boost Robin gives me, makes me more than brave and open every day."
"Speaking of Robin..." I point behind us. Robin is standing in the middle of the room scanning it to spot Sophie I believe. She is wearing a black tight dress that really shows up her cleavage. She is also carrying two cups, one for her and one for Sophie. Isn't she the best girlfriend ever? When she sees us, she smiles widely and walks towards us.
"Hey pretty ladies." she greets us and hands Sophie a cup. "I made a drink, baby" Sophie smiles at the word of endearment. "Vanessa, want me to get you anything?"
"No, that's ok." I grin at her. They look so adorable together that I barely resist not to take out my phone and take a picture of them.
"Thank you Ro." Sophie smiles widely at her too and takes a sip off her drink. My eyes fall on Ashton who is stepping in the room and greets Alice warmly. He is wearing dark jeans and a grey sweater...
"Um, you know what, guys? I think I'll go get that drink. See you later." I wink at them and march towards Ashton and my birthday girl.
"Hey, Ashton! Welcome to her majesty's 19th birthday!" I say pointing at Alice and she takes a small bow.
"Alice!" Someone calls for her and she turns around.
"Nina, Matt! Hello!" Alice waves at them as they walk in. "Excuse me guys." She smiles at us and approaches her new guests. It is her night after all.
"What would you like to drink?" I ask Ashton heading towards the table with the drinks. "Aren't you coming?" I frown. He hasn't taken a single step.
"I just need a second." He scans me from head to toe. "You look... Wow. Just wow." He shakes his head. "I am sorry, that was a lame compliment but I just can't find the words. You look amazing." He beams at me.
"Thank you, Ashton." I giggle.
Emma would high five herself if she was here. I went for the black dress she brought me from Madrid when she visited on Halloween. I hadn't worn it yet and Alice's birthday seemed like the perfect occasion. It is a black tight dress with long sleeves that goes till the middle of my thighs. The thing that makes it special though is that the sleeves leave my shoulders out. I made my hair up in a messy bun to show off the outfit better, as far for my makeup, I didn't do much. I just put on a red lipstick and some mascara.
"Shall we?" I point at the drinks and Ashton touches me by the waist to lead me over there. "So, um... I have no idea how to be a bartender." I whisper looking at the bottles in front of us.
"You are lucky. That's one of my many skills." He throws a cup in the air and catches it with ease.
"First throwing cookies in the air, now cups... I am guessing you wanted to become a magician when you were younger." I chuckle. "I can picture you practicing with apples and oranges and all kind of fruits."
"I did that." He confesses laughing. "But I wanted to become an astronaut."
"Ah, you were so close!" I show an imaginary small distance with my finger. "In the favor of journalism, it didn't happen and we now have a great talent among us."
"Who knows, it is never too late. Maybe I'll wake up tomorrow and go over NASA begging them to take me in." He hands me my drink.
"Thank you." I smile. "I'd like to see that."
"In another life perhaps. I am not the impulsive kind of guy. When I want something, I make sure I really want it and then I go for it. I don't act hastily though. I am patient. I try my best to get what I want the right way and then keep it forever. And of course I never quit." He tells me staring into my eyes.
"I think that is the right approach. I mean, if you really want something, you want it now and tomorrow and the day after. I can't understand people who desire what they can't have and once they get it, that's it. They simply lose their interest and move on the next thing." I shrug.
"There's something intriguing about going after the unattainable. Also, there is curiosity." Ashton remarks while he makes his drink.
"Yeah, we humans are curious creatures." I lift my eyebrows.
"Yes, we are and being alive is just about the most curious thing there is. Are we getting a little bit too philosophical and missing the point?" He clings his cup with mine.
"Haha, definitely not the small talk at a party. To Alice! May she has a wonderful birthday!" I raise my cup.
"To Alice it is then." Ashton takes a gulp and then looks around. "This seems like one of the best parties I've been at the dorms." He comments.
"That was our goal. I am glad we achieved it." I say with pride. "We took those party signs from the store just outside of campus." I point at the wall. "Alice insisted on not overdoing it with the balloons so I didn't take the ones in different shapes. It is a pity really, they were spectacular." I pout.
"I am sure they were." He laughs.
"They were! Stop laughing!" I begin to complain but join him as well. "As you've noticed, the cups are not the typical kind." Ashton examines it with notion. "On the bottom." I raise his hand up so he can notice.
"What's this? Chinese?" He tries to figure out.
"Nope, japanese. I wrote it myself on every single cup. It says Happy Birthday!"I inform him with excitement.
"That's cool." He nods impressed.
"I know! It took me almost an hour & 20 notebook pages just to practice the symbols but I think Alice will love it! She hasn't noticed yet. Her best friend is Japanese. He couldn't make it so I had this idea to get him involved. I have arranged a little surprise on the cake as well." I explain to Ashton 'cause elseway I might seem crazy writing in japanese for no reason.
"I am sure Alice will appreciate it." He gives me a reassuring smile.
"She better will." I joke and we both laugh. "Oh! I forgot to ask you. Is everything okay with the dean? You were at his office the other day." I find the chance to ask Ashton about it.
"Yes, I got it covered. Don't worry." He looks away.
"Ashton." I ticktack him on the shoulder.
"What?" He smiles at me brightly.
"What is going on?" I frown.
"Nothing I can't handle." He states calmly.
"You're excellent at not giving me a clear answer." I exhale.
"Vanessa?" I hear a voice behind me. "Hi! Sorry for being late!" Chloe apologizes. "Wow, you are gorgeous!" She compliments me with a smile. "Hi, Ashton!" She beams at him. She is wearing an emerald dress that points out her green eyes perfectly with a closet skirt and short sleeves. Her hair is in wavy curls and her full lips are painted red.
"You look gorgeous as well!" I return the compliment and go for a hug.
"Woah, the cake!" Chloe protects the box she is holding and I giggle.
"Hello, little lion. You do look good." Ashton says lifting his eyebrows up.
"You don't look bad yourself." Chloe raises an eyebrow at him as well.
"I am so glad you made it! And actually had time to bake the cake! I am so sorry for the late notice! May I see it?" I look at her with puppy eyes.
"Of course! I did add that nonsense text you sent me on the top like you said." She opens the box with pride.
"It looks delicious!" I remark.
"And I bet it tastes better than it looks. Good job, Chloe! I've told you a hundred times that this is your call." Ashton tells her softly.
"Well, I can't dream about cakes and baking when my dad's business goes from bad to worse. You know better than anyone." She pouts for a second but shakes this thought off and continues. "Where is the fridge? We need to get it there now or we are not going to have a birthday cake for the night."
"We'll take it at the common kitchen. I have put there the confettis and the candles and... Oh, no! I haven't put the candles! They're up in my room!" I facepalm.
"Relax, Vanessa. You go get them and Chloe and I will go put the birthday cake into the fridge." Ashton calms me down. "Besides, people just began to actually show up."
"Okay, you are right! I'll see you in a bit. Thank you guys!" I sigh and go directly to my room. I try to move fast but the boots I am wearing are not flat so it seriously takes me ages. I decide not to panic. As Ashton said, we have plenty of time. I take the candles and I get down with a normal pace. It is more crowded now. I guess it is normal since usually most of the people come to parties at least one hour after they start. I wave at Sam who sits on the sofa along with Nicky. They are so adorable together! Well, not as adorable as Robin and Sophie, but still. I take a glimpse around the room to find Ashton and Chloe but I spot Nathan instead. He is sitting next to the pool and of course he is not alone. He is talking with Brittany, aka our neighbour who only gets the paper whenever Nathan is featured on the cover. Brittany is blonde. As Susan is. I can see the pattern here. He is wearing a blue shirt and a white t-shirt on the inside. Plus, he still hasn't saved. Probably he is embracing a new style and he pulls it off perfectly. He is talking with Brittany or should I say flirting. Brittany is giggling and patting him on the shoulder. Getting physical so soon? If I remember correctly, and trust me I do, she hasn't met him at all until tonight and now they know each other for like 5 minutes and they are acting like this? Nathan whispers something in her ear and she leans closer still giggling. What's Nathan's next move? Staring at her boobs. I eyeroll at his playboy manners. Brittany is now the one whispering, giving him permission to scan over the room for his next victim. His eyes stop at me and a smirk appears on his face. I cross my hands and shake my head in disapproval. His smirk widens. He grabs Brittany by the waist and says something in her ear once more before coming over to my direction.
"Couldn't you be more discreet?" Of course not. It's against his nature.
"About?" He licks his lips tempting me to stare. I won't.
"You were staring at her boobs!" I point out the obvious thing.
"And?" He asks chuckling.
"You have no class!" I wave my hands in the air.
"Hmm, so I am not allowed to stare at boobs?" His tone is showing he finds this conversation funny.
"No." I narrow my eyebrows at him.
"Okay, okay. No boob staring. Got it." He puts his hands behind his back acting all innocent and then makes a turn around me. "Your ass is great though." He comments and my mouth drops on the floor. "What now? Should I have said butt? Okay, your butt is great." He smirks and I open my eyes widely. "You prefer the term behind? Your behind is great. I think this word makes me sound more discreet, right?" He rubs his chin.
"You-" I start talking but he chimes in.
"Just said what every guy in the room wants to tell you right now. Your ass is great, your dress is sexy and you look damn hot tonight, special friend." He says and then takes a gulp from his drink. How am I supposed to counter him with anything after that? My mind isn't functioning properly. "You can just say thank you." Now he is indicating me what to say?
"I... I won't!" I yell even though it wasn't my intention.
"Don't then. It wasn't a compliment after all. Just an observation. I just spoke the truth, special friend." He shrugs.
"I've told you not to call me like that!" I eyeroll.
"That's the more discreet nickname I can come up with, special friend." He smirks and I laugh. "Watch out! Someone might think that you are actually having fun." He lowers his voice.
"You're unbelievable." I pretend to be annoyed.
"Just admit that you've missed me already. Your life must be pretty boring without me." He makes a grimace. I am about to deny it of course but he raises a finger in the air. "Okay, I'll go first. I do admit I am constantly looking for somebody to drive me nuts like you do, to yell at me for no reason, to fill my desk with a bunch of post-its, markers, paper clips, all in different colors of course."
"It sounds like an organized person." I smile at him. Yet his teasing kind of made my heart beat faster.
"Yeap, just a bit. I thought she was some kind of freak at first." He whispers.
"I bet she thought you were a jerk." I whisper back at him and he raises his eyebrows surprised.
"She actually called me a caveman the day I met her. Do you think I have been turned into a jerk now? I mean, is it an upgrade or not?" I've called him a caveman? What? He remembers my exact words? I barely remember our conversation that day, I was too angry to memorize it.
"You would only consider being a jerk as an upgrade from being a caveman." I pat him on the chest but he takes my hand in his and drags me closer.
"Dance with me." He says and now it's my turn to get surprised.
"Were you asking or demanding?" I giggle.
"Will you keep your pretty mouth shut and just do it?" He smirks and leads my hand to his neck. Why can't I say no to him? He leaves his drink to the table next to us and places his now free hand on my waist. His touch is burning me inside and the weird thing is I loth for it to turn me into ashes. He pushes me just a bit forward so I am only inches away from him.
"You know that this song is not considered as a slowdance, right?" I remark.
I am desperately trying to find something, anything to hold on to. I need something to prevent me from getting lost in him. The music on the background will do for now. It is a pop song that I have listened to a million times but I can't remember neither the title nor the artist. I am doing a miserable job at distracting myself.
"Who cares." He shrugs. "We can do whatever the hell we want."
His smirk is enough to make me surrender. I lift up my other hand to bring it at the back of his neck as well. He is still one head taller than me even if I am wearing heels tonight. Yet I like that it allows me to look closer at him, to study him better. His long eyelashes and the mysterious brown in his eyes. The little scar on his left eyebrow and the way he manages to lift it up without moving the other one a bit. His full lips that he traces with his tongue from time to time. Oh God, there is no salvation for me. I surprise my own self thinking that it wouldn't be the worst thing. I wouldn't care if I was doomed for eternity, as long as I could stare at him for now and forever. Just like at this very moment. I intertwine my fingers behind his neck. I mean that was my intention but I am holding something in my left hand.
"Oh my God, the candles!" I take a step back. I can't believe I went all the way up to my room to get them to prepare the cake and I totally forgot about it.
"Hey... What candles?" He stretches his hand to allure me back.
"These candles!" I wave them in front of his face. "It's almost 12! I have to get the cake ready!" I say in panic.
"You really have to?" He exhales.
"You know I have to!" I turn around and run towards the kitchen hearing clear though Nathan's laugh behind me.
Robin's POV
We all sing Alice the birthday song cheering and clapping really hard when she blows the candles. She hugs people after people but we manage to get in line relatively soon considering the people that showed up for her. I hug her, wish her happy birthday again, and after taking a piece of cake I make my way to the booze, where a few people are lining up already, so I start eating me piece, will my pretty girl is 'socializing' talking with a girl, looking shy as usual around people, at least she stopped coming off as ice queen!
Back to the party, this is one of the best birthday parties I have been to. Vee did an amazing job with this. I could definitely use her the next time I wanna throw a party for my pretty girl, or maybe Alex.
Oh, the cake is also amazing too, really, I should ask Vanessa were she got it from. The cake is simply ORGASMIC, but I dare not say it in front of Sam, who usually provides us with birthday cakes.
All in all, I am having a great time, and not just me. Sam and Nicks are all lovey dovey on the couch, Joss is talking with some guys, Alice being the birthday girl she is, is walking around, talking to the guests, Vanessa is hanging with Ashton, while Nathan is with the guys from the frat.
As for my beautiful girl, she is across the room alone right at this moment, the girl is gone, waiting for me to come back from my refill duties. She looks so pretty today and she is genuinely having a great time, but sometimes I sensed she was a bit stiff and spaced out for a few seconds.
Finally the guy in front of me is done with the Captain Morgan bottle, so I take it next. I pour some in a cup and then take the pineapple juice and some ice. I am totally focused on stirring the liquid, when a feel a smack on my back.
"Hey Robin! What up, dude?" Grant is standing next to me holding a cup.
"Hey Grant, how are you?" I engage in a conversation.
"Dude, I am splendid, the cake was awesome, do you think we could get another piece?" he asks goofily.
"I don't know man, you have to ask Alice." I shrug and turn around, facing the living room where Sophie is engrossed in her phone.
"Yeah, yeah. Maybe I will steal one. Have you spotted anything good?" I take a sip from my drink and think about my answer.
"No, and I am not looking. I am in a relationship." I say simply, but another smack comes on my back again.
"Dude, really? Get out of here! Since when? Joss didn't mention anything!" he is looking at me really surprised.
"It isn't Joss' business to say anything about my dating life, Grant." I eye roll. I don't have a problem with Grant knowing, but knowing him he would ask a million of questions about it and he would piss me off eventually.
"Geez, you are way too serious! Who is the lucky chick?" I grimace at the word. Sophie is not a chick, and I would never use that word to describe her.
"The lucky Girl, is to be unknown to you. She is not here at the moment." I don't say anything else hoping this will be the end of his questions.
"Damn, I bet she is hot as fuck." I grimace again.
"What about you, Grant? Any lucky girl in your life?" There is no way in hell Grant has found a girl that's neither a bimbo nor a crazy one.
"Nah, nothing good", as it was expected, "but there is this girl that's keeping me on my toes. I swear she is playing all cold and sassy, but I think there is still a chance. I won't give up!" he says enthusiastically. Who's the poor girl, dear Horos?
"Oh, yeah, do I know her?" I should probably warn that girl about him.
"Yeah, man, Sophie." I choke on my drink at his exclamation.
"MY SOPHIE?" Wait, tune it down, Ro. "I mean, our Sophie? My friend, our friend, Sophie?" I ask him clenching my jaw. Ok, Grant I like you as a fellow human, but you need to stay the fuck away from my girlfriend.
"Yeah, dude. I can't think of a way to talk to her!" he sighs deeply, but then his face lights up. "I am gonna ask her to dance!" Wait, what? No way! Think Ro, think fast....
"Ahhhh...you know...you have something in your hair. I think it's from the cake, you should go check it out before you go to Sophie." I say quickly pointing at his hair. His hands fly immediately to his head.
"Oh shit! Thanks Ro, gotta look hot as fuck for her! I gotta jet, wish me luck!" he leaves the cup on the table, and runs to the bathroom. Ok, operation : protect Sophie from horny Grant is on!
I run to Sophie and her smile broadens the moment she sees me again. I come in front of her face and before she begins to look confused I put my hands on her shoulders.
"Let's dance!" I bring her hands on my shoulder and I put mine around her waist. She looks around flustered and I reassure her. "Friends dance like this all the time, don't worry!" I smile broadly. She nods and relaxes visibly as we begin to sway to the music, until I spot Grant across from us. Damn it. I look at my pretty girl.
"Hey, baby, follow my lead, ok?" she gets even more confused by that, but I have no chance to explain as Grant is behind Sophie and taps her shoulder. Sophie turns around cocking her eyebrow.
"Hello, Sophie." He gives her his charming smile. Pfff, as if this will work on my girl.
"Grant." Sophie acknowledges him.
"Yeah... I was wondering if you would like to dance with me." He brings his hand behind his neck, looking nervous.
Sophie is about to answer when I interfere.
"Her feet hurt." I state looking directly on him.
"They do?" I hear Sophie ask next to me, but I don't turn to meet her gaze.
"But you guys are dancing?" Grant remarks and I facepalm. Think something, blondie!
"Ummm... yeah I stepped on her foot, I am wearing high heels, they hurt like a motherfucker, right Sophie?" I turn to her. Her cheeks are red and she has a knowing look on her face. Oops, busted! Shit.
"Yes, my foot hurts." she agrees with me.
"But, only one dance." He pleads.
"She is also a bit tired." I continue. "And has a headache." I hear Sophie giggle next to me. Take the hint Grant and take off.
"But, just-" he mumbles.
"Grant, what Robin is trying to politely say, is that there is no way in hell I will ever dance with you. Goodbye." My eyes widen at her response. Oohh shit, his face is hilarious! His mouth is on the floor and I kinda pity him, but this is just so fucking funny!
"Um..but..I.." he is trying to make a sentence.
"Goodbye Grant." And just like that, Sophie turns around and brings her hands on my shoulder. I look at the poor guy and shrug apologetically. He is pouting and his shoulders fall in defeat. He turns around and leaves us heading straight to the booze.
I focus on Sophie again who is grinning cockily may I say.
"You got jealous." It is not a question the way it comes of her mouth. Shit, I need to think this through.
It dawned to me just now, that this was unacceptable. I messed up. Damn it.
"Oh, God, I am so sorry, babe. You are not my property, I can't believe I acted like that, you have the right to dance with whoever you want!" I start freaking out, thinking I acted like a jealous spoiled brat. I never act like that, I am a reasonable person, and I know Sophie loves me and only me.
I can't believe I did that. Damn it, Ro!
"I know I can dance with whoever I want. That's what I am doing right now, am I not?" she smirks, looking at me intensely.
"I had no right to do that, you are a free person, with free will and I interfered." I continue, scolding myself. Sophie's hands though leave my shoulder and wrap around my waist.
"I don't mind you interfering, it was about time for Grant the Ape to get that I am not interested in him. I would have been more cruel to him if you hadn't spoken." That is true, but still.
"I know, but still... I don't normally act like that. I trust you, I swear, but the mere thought of a guy...or a girl, being close to you and trying to hit on you, made me go crazy." I admit lamely. She giggles again, clearly enjoying this.
"You got jealous." She bites her lip, and at the same time her hand starts caressing my back. Ok, this is not what friends do when dancing, but I am not sure Sophie gives a damn right now.
"Yes, I did, I am not afraid to admit it. You are a very beautiful girl, it's natural." The compliment makes her eyes sparkle as she steps closer to me.
"It's cute." She states cockily and I shake my head a few times resigned.
"It's lame, but I don't care. I am not afraid to admit it that I don't like guys and girls around you, but I know I have no right. So I am sorry." Sometimes I hate how considerate I am. Bruh, this is not a normal reaction for a 19 year old. I am so proud of myself though. These years of self discovery and self-psychoanalysis have paid off. My shrink, Doc. Morris would have been proud.
Oh, yeah I did a year of therapy when I was 13, after I came out to Alex. I was a teen, orphaned at the age of 2, living with her uncle, and in the midst of self-discovery. Alex insisted on going, in case I had problems with self-esteem or stuff. Doc. Morris made me like psychology and made me think of pursuing it as a career, but if I was to become a psychologist I would love to work with the police in the criminology department. That changed quickly, thank Athena, cause I don't think studying the mind of a criminal would have been my thing. Anyway...
I focus back on my girl. She has a weird look on her face, almost like the face she makes when she wants to... oh... is she turned on? Holly Pokeballs!
"You like it." This is not a question either, I can tell she does. She bites her lip and just nods. I was right! I am about to brag, when she swallows hard and takes a step even closer, and leans forward, next to my ear.
"Can we go home now? I wanna be alone with you." Someone pinch me, please. Is she for real? She wants us to leave the party in order to get funky? I have spoiled her! She has been very willing as of late, initiating things, taking me by surprise.
"Anything you want." Fun fact, Sophie does not need to know: I was the one that made Alex take this weekend for his night shifts, so he will be at the station for the next 2 days. He pulled some strings and asked for a few favours for this but I am rewarding him with a weekend at a spa with Kira for the weekend after Valentine's Day.
I did not plan this to have a 'sex weekend' ok, honest to god! I thought it would be amazing to have the house all to ourselves for more than one night, like a 2 day sleepover. Besides, I still need to figure out what to do for our first time. I need to pick up candles and flowers, and probably get new sheets.
"I want to go home with you." she whispers again and I shiver. I nod and take her hand and drag her to Alice. We hug her and thank her for the party and then after saying goodbye to our friends we get outside and head to my car.
Alice's POV
The party's almost over, but I don't feel tired at all. All this excitement hasn't been absorbed yet even if it's 2am. My friends told me they had a blast and I am really happy about it. A friend offered to be the DJ for my party, one of the best choices I've ever made since his playlists were awesome and the people danced like crazy. The majority of the drinks was finished, but thankfully there wasn't any serious alcohol involved incident, besides two people who threw up in the common toilettes. Well that happens at a party! I am just thrilled that the guests and me had a great time.
The next highlight of the evening was the birthday cake. It looked like the surprise Vanessa was planning was a Japanese wish written with delicious icing on it, but Vanessa being her innocent self fell into Ren's prunk. As it was natural, Ren had to mark his presence somehow at my party even though thousands of miles separate us. Instead of a kind hearted wish, a famous japanese swear was written on the cake. As it was obvious the majority didn't understand it, but me, the classmates from the japanese class and of course the people who watch anime burst out laughing including me.The others were watching us with confusion painted all over their faces, like we were being possessed. Vanessa was looking at all of us startled, because she was trying to understand what's going on. I explained to them about the prunk and everyone laughed, but I saw that Vanessa's cheeks turned red. Even the makeup couldn't hide her embarrassment. I said some hilarious comments after I put out the candles to make her feel better and I cursed in a humorous way Ren, for exploiting Vanessa's good nature to make his prunk. Ashton comforted her after the incident and didn't leave her side. He's such a sweetheart.
The common room is almost empty now. Me, Vanessa, Ashton, Joseph, Nina and Matt are the last remaining people. The place is a total mess and we have to clean it up otherwise we will find ourselves in trouble. Joseph offered to stay and help us like the rest, which I find quite weird. Me and him didn't have time to talk on our own at the party. I was bouncing from group to group to talk with everyone, so we talked only when we were in the same company. Nevertheless, we were stealing glances of each other and I couldn't help it, but smile every time my eyes caught his. As we are cleaning, Joseph strolls on over me, with his beautiful smile pinned on his face.
"Can you come out with me for a second?" he says in a soft voice, looking at me straight in the eyes.
"Yeah!" I answer astonished. "Why?"
"You'll see!" he answers mischievously. Such mystery! What does he want?
As we are walking, we pass Vanessa and Ashton, who are done cleaning and have sat to rest, while talking. Ashton's body is turned towards Vanessa, his whole attention is on her.
"It's so obvious that Ashton digs Vanessa." Joseph remarks, looking at them.
"Where did that come from?" I ask.
"Just look at him! It's not that hard to understand. Does Vanessa like him back or she hasn't gotten a whiff yet?" He asks really casually.
"That's Vanessa's business and I am not going to disclose it to you!" I defend Vanessa's privacy. I can't understand Joseph's sudden interest in Vanessa's love life.
"I see! She hasn't understood a thing!" Joseph ends up in his own conclusion. Well he's right, but I am not going to admit that.
"Why do you care? Do you have a friend who's interested in Vanessa?" I try to find out why the 20 questions game.
"Maybe I do, but I am not going to disclose anything to you as well." he smirks and he holds the door to get out of the building. Who the hell likes Vanessa? He really got my curiosity up. Is it Grant? Poor Vanessa! But Grant likes pretty much everything that has boobs. Who else can it be? Joseph knows a hell of people in college.
The moment we get out, the winter cold surrounds me and in my anticipation to find out why Joseph wanted to speak with me in private, I forgot to take a coat. My arms are exposed to the wind and I start freezing. I envelop my hands around my body, but I don't think it helps a lot. I am about to say that I need to get my coat, but Joseph speaks first.
"Here, take my jacket! You're freezing!" he puts his black jacket around my arms. It's such a nice and caring gesture. He's so considerate and sweet sometimes.
"What about you?" I ask, since I think he's freezing too wearing only his shirt.
"Don't worry about me!" he smiles. "I am hot enough!" he jokes and I eyeroll. Classic Joseph, but that's one of the reasons I am stuck on him.
"Who writes your lines? You should fire him!" I joke as well, as we are moving towards a bench.
"I improvise and I pull it through even under the weirdest circumstances!" he says in a playful attitude.
"I think you make the circumstances weird." I tease him and he chuckles. "So why did you want me out here?" I ask curiously.
"First of all, I am sorry that I didn't state the obvious! You're breathtaking tonight." he compliments me with an ease. He does it so natural. His eyes penetrate me and my heart starts racing. He's the only one who can say these words and manage that. Other people told me that I was looking beautiful tonight as well, but their complements didn't have a huge impact on me like his.
"Thanks! I did my best to be the Queen of the night!" I simper, trying to act cool, while my inside is melting.
"Mission accomplished! You can't believe how many guys couldn't take their eyes of off you tonight!" he remarks.
"Including you?" I blurt, without thinking. Why did I have to say that? Because I wanted to know so bad.
"As I've told you many times, I am not blind." he beams. How much I love this beam. I stay like a statue speechless. We said we were going to keep it friendly, right? I think this ship has been sunk in a while. There's no way to be friendly to each other. Sexual tension and attraction emit from both ways. Mine is deeper and more sentimental, while his is a big question mark. "To answer your question, I brought you out here, because I wanted to give you your birthday present." My what?
"But you have already given me my present." I answer confused, remembering Sophie giving me a fancy bag from an expensive store. Joseph looks at me puzzled.
"Did you think that Sophie's present was from both of us?" he exclaims and I nod. "I am hurt now!" His dramatic nature speaks. "I thought you knew me better than that."
"But you didn't give it to me like all the other people!" I protest like a 5 year old.
"Because I am not like all the other people! I wanted to give it to you on your actual birthday day, which is today, since it's past 12 and I crave to see your reactions." He flashes a bright smile.
"So what's your special gift?" I ask and I think my heart is going to get out of my chest.
"To be honest, I was thinking of buying you a punch bag, so you can let off steam on it instead of me." He smirks and I laugh. "But I went for something else..." He puts his hand in his trousers pocket and takes out a small jewelry box, which he hands me over. "Happy birthday Alice!"
I open the box and I see a silver bracelet with navy blue stones and the infinity symbol. The blue stones have the same colour as his eyes. It's so beautiful. I stay still, looking at it in awe. Strange choice of symbol. Why the infinity one? Does it mean anything? Can it mean anything? I think I am overanalyzing things. It's just a decoration.
"Do you like it?" He asks and I understand his anticipation behind his calm voice. I suddenly realize that I forgot to speak.
"I love it!" I raise my head from the jewelry to face him. My reaction makes him flash a wide and bright smile.
"I'm glad, because I wanted you to have something of mine in your collection of special bracelets. I hope, or better, I want it to bring you luck... To infinity and beyond." He says in a sincere voice. His hazel blue eyes are glowing, penetrating me and I think he can read my face perfectly. I don't see the player Joseph right now, but someone that I think he feels something me. Am I going crazy, right?
"I am going to wear it right now." I say enthusiastically.
"May I?" He offers and I give him his gift. I stretch my hand and he clasps my new bracelet around it. Then he takes it and he caresses it with his soft hands. His thin fingers cross all the way until the centre of my palm. His touch feels amazing on my skin. The familiar electricity passes through my body again. I've missed you, little friend. After he pulls my hand in a slow motion and his lips meet with the top of it, in a sweet and wonderful kiss. All my senses are on full alarm now and my emotions are going wild. I know I have to stop it somehow, but this time I feel incapable of avoiding him. I don't want to do it. I know I ought to, but for once I want to feel it.
Joseph takes his eyes from my hand to meet mine. I fell under his hypnotizing spell once again, but I don't want to wake up. His right hand climbs through my arm on my neck's curve and he leans closer. If I need to avoid it, this is the time, but no, I won't. It's my birthday and Joseph's kiss is the gift I crave the most. I want to let myself free this one time. Tomorrow I will face with the consequences. I lean closer to him and his breath is on my mouth, when my phone, which I was holding this whole time, rings.
At the sound of it both of us startle, resulting to break away from each other. I look at the screen irritated. Who the hell ruined this moment? It's Ren! Like seriously? Does he have put cameras on me? Why is he calling? It's my birthday tonight and he is calling to wish me happy birthday. That's why. I was so captivated by the moment that I totally forgot evrything else.
"Hey Ren!" I answer the phone, trying to keep it cool. I will tell him off later, when Joseph will not be present.
"Happy birthday! I wish you the best, my kickass friend!" Ren wishes cheerfully on the phone.
"Thanks baka!" I reply saying him humorously moron in japanese.
"I don't think I wake you, right? I am sure you're partying until morning. Also I wanted to be one of the first people, who wish you happy birthday." His jovial attitude doesn't fade away, from my monotonous voice. He's so sweet and yet I am still irritated by him.
"No, but the party has kind of ended... I am cleaning now." I say calmly.
"Alice, I think you sound off! Is everything ok?" he asks worried. What can I say now? I can't speak freely, because Joseph is standing in front of me and also I can't change the language, because also Joseph is not stupid not to understand the reason that I changed the dub.
"Yeah yeah! I am just in the middle of a conversation right now, so I will call you later." I try to find something to say as an excuse, but of course Ren doesn't buy. He knows me too damn well.
"I see! I just hope you didn't do something you will regret tomorrow." He signs. I didn't because you interrupted it. I don't know if I should thank him or curse him right now.
"Talk to you later!" I answer sharply. "Also get ready to tell you off big time for the cake prunk." And not only. I threaten him and he chuckles. "Shame on you for using sweet, innocent Vanessa as your puppet to your evil plans."
"It was brilliant! Admit it!" he says laughing.
"Screw you!" I mock him, cracking a smile.
"You did like it! Talk to you later Alice." he says and he hangs up.
"That was Ren as you've heard!" I say, trying to act cool to Joseph. "He brags about his prunk." I try to soothe the atmosphere.
"Your Asian friend is smart indeed, but he sucks at timing." He points out. Tell me about it. I guess the universe is against it as well. Ren's call brought me back to reality. I was about to make a huge mistake.
"I think I should um... call him. He can get really impatient." I say making lame grimaces. Joseph examines me from head to toe.
"I guess this wasn't our night!" he says and I don't know what answer I should give to this. Then he looks at the night sky. There's not a single cloud in it. We can see every star pretty clear.
"Maybe it was for a reason..." I mumble. He moves his eyes from the sky to me.
"Maybe..." He exhales.
"Thanks again for the present. It's beautiful and I won't take it off my hand." I say, pointing at his marvelous bracelet. This makes him flash a genuine smile. I take off his jacket to give it to him. He doesn't seem so eager to take it. "Thanks for that! You probably saved me from spending my birthday on bed, instead of DC." I grin, as he remembers that I've told him I am going to spend my birthday with my dad.
"It was my duty! I don't want your dad to frame me for a federal crime, just because I let his daughter out in the cold." He smirks and I chuckle lightly.
"Yeah, you probably don't want that!" I say playfully and he gives me one more look.
"Goodnight Alice!" He tells me at the end and he leans to leave a small kiss at the edge of my mouth. My body reacts immediately to it, like he's pressing a switch. "And happy birthday!" Then he turns his back to leave.
"Goodnight Joseph!" I say, touching right away the spot, where his lips touched my skin.
A/N: Sooo, a lot happened on Alice's birthday party! What was your favorite part? As always, thank you for reading, voting and commenting! xx
