Why We Sacrifice

When an ANBU is mortally wounded in battle, they are required to destroy their bodies to prevent any information from getting into the enemy hands. 

An example of this was shown when an ANBU killed himself after delivering Orochimaru's whereabouts to a Leaf Bird. (Episode 91: Orochimaru's Hideout Discovered!)
