Chapter Thirty Nine

5th Year, Hogsmeade
Adele's POV

I watched Liberty as she drank her butterbeer. She glanced up after taking a long sip, a layer of froth still on her upper lip. I snorted, leaning forward and wiping it off with my finger.
"Do you remember this is where we first met?" she asked, smiling at me.
I nodded, blushing. "How could I forget? That was one of the most embarrassing moments of my entire life. And I've done a lot of embarrassing things."

(4th Year)

Arianna and I wandered down the high street of Hogsmeade, searching for our favourite cafe. It was enchanted so it moved around every week, so it was difficult to find, but the butterbeer was amazing - in my opinion, even better than the Three Broomsticks.
As we reached the end of the street, I groaned and started to turn back.
"Ari, we'll never find it! It's literally nowhere."
She suddenly gasped, grabbing my arm and pulling me back around.
"There," she smiled, pointing at a small, mustard yellow building tucked away between two other buildings.
We entered the cafe and Arianna ordered our drinks while I took one of the tiny wooden tables and started looking around the cafe. They were mostly other Hogwarts students, although I couldn't say I recognised many of them.
I turned my head and noticed a girl who I was pretty sure was the Hufflepuff Quidditch captain. Her light blonde ringlets bounced up and down as she laughed and chatted with her friends.

"Who are you looking at?" Ari asked, arriving with the drinks.
I took a sip from my butterbeer, a warm tingly feeling washing over my entire body as I drank. "Nobody."
She raised an eyebrow, glancing at the table next door. "The Quidditch one?"
I nodded, biting my lip.
"Go talk to her," Ari smiled encouragingly.
"Absolutely not," I scoffed. "Are you mad?"
"Come on, what's the worst that could happen?"
"She could hear me."
She rolled her eyes, giving me her look. I hated that look. I knew it meant I was being irrational, but it's not as if I could help it. There was no way I was going to go over there.

She stood up. "Fine."
For a second I was confused as she started walking towards their table, then I panicked. Almost knocking my butterbeer off the table, I tried to grab her sleeve as she walked away, but missed. "Ari, I will kill you," I hissed, but she pretended not to hear me and kept walking.
I watched in horror as she paused next to the girl and greeted her with a friendly smile. I leaned forward, desperately trying to hear their conversation. Suddenly they started walking back over here. I hastily flew back to my seat, trying unsuccessfully to look casual while my heart was attempting to slam its way out of my chest.
I squeezed my eyes shut as they got closer. Maybe this was just a dream. Maybe if I tried hard enough, I could make myself wake up. Maybe-
"Hey." A curious voice punctured my thoughts. Trying to stop myself from literally throwing up, I forced my eyes open and plastered my best attempt at a smile onto my flushed face.
The girl was grinning at me, her eyes creased at the corners with kindness. I stared at her for a second, and then remembered that she had spoken to me. Shit. I endeavoured to come up with an appropriate thing to say. My mind had gone completely blank - all my internal workings had just shut down. What great timing.
As I struggled with my uncooperative body, I realised the girl was still staring at me, confusion etched on her face.
I glanced desperately at Arianna, who was looking at me with a mixture of disbelief and frustration. She mouthed something. What was it? She mouthed it again, her eyes wide. I suddenly realised.
"Hi! I mean, hi. Hi there," I stammered, and then mentally kicked myself. Arianna gave me a sarcastic thumbs up.
The girl's mouth twitched. "Hi," she smirked. "I'm Liberty."
"My-my name's Adele," I told her, biting my lip anxiously.
"Oh, right, Adele Dursley?" she asked, recognition dawning on her face.
I blinked. "You know me?"
"I'm friends with Albus," she explained. "He talks about you sometimes, but I never really put name to face."
She sat down opposite me. I took a sip of my butterbeer, trying to disguise my awkwardness, but it went down the wrong way and I ended up choking on it. Arianna thumped me on the back as I coughed and spluttered, spraying butterbeer all over myself and Liberty.
After what felt like forever, I managed to breathe again, and stared at the mess I had made in horror.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry," I apologised frantically as Liberty wiped the butterbeer off her shirt with a napkin.
"It's fine, don't worry about it. The shirt's flannel, it'll dry real quick," she explained. "Are you okay?"
I nodded, my cheeks burning with embarrassment.
Another girl with short, messy, rust coloured hair tapped Liberty on the shoulder, smiling at me.
"We gotta go if we're gonna get back for the match," she said.
Liberty glanced at me. "Sorry, Adele, I have to go. See you around, though, maybe?"
I nodded again, not able to speak for fear of making the situation worse, although I'm not entirely sure how I could mess it up any more. Liberty stood up and started to leave with her friend.
I closed my eyes, trying to turn myself invisible, when I heard footsteps coming back my way.
"Hey, sorry, I forgot something," Liberty grinned at me.
I stared at her.
"Goodbye," she smiled.
"Bye," I managed to croak out.

As soon as I was sure she had left, I thumped my head down on the table.
"That was a disaster," I moaned, looking at Arianna. "Why the hell did you do that to me?"
She smirked. "It wasn't that bad."
I stared at her. "Are you kidding me?"
"Look," she told me, pointing at my butterbeer.
I frowned in confusion. "Huh?"
Rolling her eyes, she picked the bottle up, showing me the hastily scrawled note underneath.
