Chapter Eleven
3rd Year, Hospital Wing
Scorpius's POV
I sighed, and leant back on my soft pile of pillows. Albus stroked my hair absentmindedly, and then realised he was doing it and jerked his hand away, a scarlet red blush rising up his neck.
"I - I'm sorry," he stuttered.
"It's okay," I replied, smiling at him, but he turned away, tears in his eyes. I frowned. He was acting very strangely.
Madam Pomfrey bustled in with a glass of water for me and some pumpkin juice for Albus. I took a sip, feeling the medicine in it flood through my body and soothe the pain in my ribs.
"Do you still have any pains, Scorpius?" Madam Pomfrey asked kindly.
"Well, my head still feels really painful, and I feel faint lots of the time," I replied.
She frowned, and took out a roll of parchment. She cast an incantation on it, and words appeared as it they were being written. I peered closer at the words on the parchment. She whipped it away, out of my sight. I scowled.
Albus winked at me, and sauntered up behind her, glancing casually at the parchment. Suddenly his face dropped.
"What? What is it?" I cried.
Madam Pomfrey turned around, spotting Albus behind her. His eyes were misted with tears, and his cheeks were a rosy red. She sighed at him, and ruffled his hair fondly.
"I'm afraid, Scorpius, you have severe concussion. Can you remember being knocked over? What do you remember before that?"
I tried to think back to before I woke up in the hospital, but I didn't remember the accident at all.
"I'm sorry, Madam Pomfrey. The last thing I remember was going to the library with Millie Moonrise, Naomi's sister," I replied sadly.
Albus suddenly let out a despairing sob, and fled from the hospital wing.
3rd Year, Hospital Wing
Annabel's POV
Naomi and I raced up the moving staircases to the hospital wing, eager to find out what had happened with Scorpius. Zac had followed Professor McGonagall to the toilets to get changed into a spare uniform. I panted as we stumbled up the hundreds and thousands of steps. Naomi was bounding up the stairs in front of me, barely even red. She did cross-country running with her Muggle parents, whereas I could be fast if I wanted, but had absolutely no stamina.
"Come on Annabel, we need to get to the hospital wing quickly," giggled Naomi, hardly out of breath.
I gasped, trying to speak, but I could barely breathe. She grinned, trying not to laugh as I growled furiously at her.
We finally reached the end of the stairs and ran down the corridor towards the hospital wing. Naomi tried to pull open the large wooden door, but it was too heavy for her and she fell backwards, her hands slipping off the brass door handle. I stifled a laugh as she landed heavily on her butt.
"You could have at least caught me," she groaned, standing up carefully. "You try, then!"
I walked over to the door and grasped the handle tightly. Naomi raised her eyebrows sceptically. I sighed, grinning, and pulled hard. The door swung open with a creak.
"That's not fair! I must have loosened it," protested Naomi, as I laughed.
"Weakling," I retorted, smiling. She shook her head, scowling, although her eyes were sparkling.
Suddenly Albus came running out of the hospital wing, tears running down his face. He shoved past us and raced down the corridor. I glanced at Naomi anxiously, and we hurried into the hospital wing.
3rd Year, Slytherin Dormitories
Albus's POV
I threw myself down on my bed, sobbing. This entire time I had been in denial about my feelings for Scorpius, but now I was sure. I loved him, I knew it. My chest felt tight, and I was struggling to breathe in between all the crying. Did he like me back? Surely not. He was in love with Naomi! But his kiss...it had felt like he was kissing me back. I burrowed myself deeper into the green and silver patterned duvet, my brain stuck on an eternal loop. He didn't remember anything...
He couldn't feel the same about me. Perhaps he wasn't thinking straight. Surely he was concussed? That must be it. He wouldn't have kissed me otherwise. This thought brought a fresh wave of tears to my eyes, and I vowed never to leave my bed again. He didn't remember anything, and he didn't love me.
