What if One Direction Went to Hogwarts? Part 1
I thought of this story plot and I was like "Oh my god I'm a genius," so then I looked up to see if any other fanfics combined the Harry Potter universe with the boys and there were SO MANY. I really thought I did something😐 But that's ok because this is my own original work and I'm still going to write this fanfic even if hundreds of other people have already used the same plot line!

Yeah so I drew this cover too... erm... ignore the fact that Liam and Zayn are just casually sitting on the Whomping Willow. Didn't occur to me that that was a problem until I finished and I was too lazy to fix it. Also ignore the fact that Harry's hair looks nothing like his actual hair in 2012 but I kept it because I thought it looked FREAKING ADORABLE HATE ON IT IF YOU WANT BUT I DONT CARE

Setting the scene:
I decided that the lads are in year 4 because why not? (They're all around the same age again and the year is 2012)
Ok um... Statistics! Statistics? Yeah... statistics. Eh idk

________________________________
Summer holiday is over and the five lads are on their way to Hogwarts for their fourth year at school. They sit in a compartment towards the back of the Hogwarts Express talking away, remenicing the times of when they first went to Hogwarts.
"Remember when I first met you, Lou?" Niall asks his friend with a cheeky smile on his face.
"Yeah you busted through the wall from King's Cross Station and nearly ran me over with your trolley!" Louis replies.
They all laugh.
"I'm sorry but that was my first time running through a wall!" Niall says, defending himself.
They all laugh harder.
"I remember when I first met Harry I thought he was related to Harry Potter," Zayn says.
"Why? Because my name's Harry?"
"Yeah!"
Harry face palms as they all laugh again.
"I remeber I was really nervous about being sorted into a house," Harry admits.
"I was too," Niall says.
"I think we all were," Louis chimes in.
They all nod in agreement.
*3 years earlier*
The five boys stand huddled together in the middle aisle of the Hogwart's Great Hall, waiting for Professor McGonagall to call their names. They had all just met each other that day but they planned on sticking together for the next 8 years.
"Horan, Niall?" Professor McGonagall reads.
Niall steps out from the crowd and shakily walks up the steps. He sits down and the Sorting Hat is placed on his head.
"Hmm... quite loyal this one, but also brave and determined. Quite a happy-go-lucky personality then?" the Sorting Hat says.
"Y-yes sir," Niall stuttered.
"Right then, Hufflepuff!" the Sorting Hat announced.
A huge smile speads across Niall's face, replacing the worry that was once there. He trots down the steps and goes over to sit at the Hufflepuff table, looking back and smiling at the other four who return smiles.
After a few names Professor McGonagall calls, "Malik, Zain (Zayn)?"
Zayn steps forward and makes his way up to the chair where he sits down. He wears the same nervous expression that Niall had not too long ago. Professer Mcgonagall places the hat on his head while Zayn sits in anticipation.
"Ah, a clever one we have here. Always looking out for his friends... yes, yes. But also a bit mischevious as well."
Zayn smilies slightly at the Sorting Hat's words.
"Ravenclaw!"
Zayn grins and goes to sit down at the Ravenclaw table, waving to his friends as he goes.
"Payne, Liam?"
Liam walks up to the chair and sits down.
"Yes, a very brave one you are, young lad. Wise too,"
Liam shifts uncomfortably in his seat.
"Gryffindor!"
Liam beams and sits down at the Gryffindor table.
"Styles, Harry?"
Harry's usually brightly colored face turns white at the sound of his name.
"Harry, you need to let go of my hand now," Louis whispers to him.
"Right, sorry."
He walks up to the chair and sits down.
"Hopefully this one won't be as troublesome as the last Harry," the Sorting Hat says.
"Right, this one too, very brave and courageous. Hmm... rather cheeky too."
Harry shruggs his shoulders innocently.
"Gryffindor!"
Harry sighs with relief and plops down next to Liam at the Gryffindor table, giving him a high five.
Louis looks around at his new friends at their tables, waiting for his name to be called.
"Tomlinson, Louis?"
Louis cautiously steps out from the small crowd of the rest of the 1st years and up to the chair where the hat is placed on his head.
"Oh, yes, a mischevious lad are we? Also clever and brave."
Louis looks around nervously, trying to avoid eye contact with anyone.
"Slytherin!"
The Doncaster boy's eyes widen at the house name but nevertheless, smiles and gladly takes a seat at the Slytherin table.
*back to present time*
"You looked scared at first to be sorted into Slytherin!" Zayn said, laughing and pointing to Louis.
"I was not!"
"Yes you were."
"Well, maybe a little bit," Louis said looking down.
"It's alright, Tommo," Niall assured him.
"Are you alright, Liam?" Harry asks, noticing his friend staring out the window of the train and not seeming to be involved in the conversation.
"What? Oh, yeah I'm okay."
Harry shruggs and resumes the conversation, leaving Liam to stare back out the window.
...
The Hogwarts Express arrives at the school not long after. Returning students gather their trunks and make thier way into the school while 1st years head off to follow the school's gamekeeper, Hagrid. The lads follow one another into the school where they bring thier trunks and other belongings to their Common Rooms and head into the Great Hall for the beggining of the year feast.
"See you lads in the Great Hall!" Louis said.
"Okay!" Niall responded.
The five of them went to their Common Rooms, Harry leading the way to the Gryffindor room while Liam trailed behind.
"What do you hope to learn this year, Li?" Harry asked excitedly.
"Liam?"
Behind him, Liam dragged his trunk barely off of the floor and stared at the ground.
"Liam, what's wrong?"
His head snaps up with a look of worry in his eyes.
"I'm fine," he lies.
"Clearly you're not. C'mon you can tell me."
"Really, Haz, it's nothing," Liam says as he pushes by his friend to the Fat Lady.
Harry stands on the stair way, feeling hurt that Liam was obviously lying to him. He brushes the feeling away and steps through the painting and into the Common Room. He couldn't help but wonder what was bothering Liam.
...
All of the Hogwarts students sat at their tables in the Great Hall as the headmistress, Professer McGonagall (this is after the Battle of Hogwarts if any of you are confused) gives her begginging of the year speech. The first years are sorted and the house elves bring the food out from the kitchens. Harry notices that Liam hasn't cheered up at all. He sits next to him at the Gryffindor table as his head hangs low and just stares at his food.
"Not in the mood to be eating?" Harry asks.
"No. I'm not really hungry," Liam says without looking up.
From behind him, Liam feels a sudden glob of something hit him in the back of the head. He reaches up and grabs a handful of pudding from his hair. He turns to see Louis laughing from the table behind him.
"Mr. Tomlinson! That behavior will not be tolerated! You are in your 4th year. You should be demonstrating appropriate behavior to our younger students," Professor McGonagall says.
"Right. Sorry, Professor."
Liam rolls his eyes and turns back to his plate.
"What's up with him?" Louis mouths to Harry.
Harry shrugs his shoulders in response.
...
The next day the five lads find their first class to be Defense Against the Darks.
"Ever since Harry Potter and the situation with the dementors in his 4th year, the headmistress has made it mandatory that all students learn how to produce their patronuses in their 4th year," says Professor DeVito. (Did I really just make Danny DeVito their Defense Against the Dark Arts professer? Yes. Yes I did. Also, I just made up the rule that 4th year students learn how to produce a patronus.)
"In order to produce your patronus, you must think of a happy memory. Allow me to demonstrate."
Professor DeVito stands in the middle of the classroom as the students back off to the side.
"Expecto Patronum!"
A blue and white wispy figure emerges from Professor DeVito's wand, taking the shape of a basset hound. The dog trots around the classroom, making the students gasp and laugh as it went before dissapating into the air.
"Now," Professor DeVito continues, "I want you all to think of a happy memory. When you have thought of your memory, I would like you to get into a group of two or three people and start to practice the charm.
Niall stands in silence for a moment before thinking of his happy memory. He smiles to himself before going over to Liam.
"Hey, Li! Wanna be my partner?" he asks with a big smile on his face.
"Oh, sure, Niall," Liam returns a smile but his isn't as wide as his friend's.
The two stand in the back of the classroom getting ready to practice the charm.
"So what's your happy memory?" Niall asks.
"Erm... I'm not sure yet. What about you?"
"Mine's when I first started playing guitar!"
"Oh yeah. That sounds good," Liam says, his words trailing off.
"Do you want help thinking of a memory?"
"No, it's alright, thanks. I'll think of one eventually."
"Alright," Niall says. He noticed Liam doesn't seem to be acting like his normal self lately. Over the last 2 days he's been acting quite strange. Always in his own little world.
"Expecto Patronum!" Niall says, but all his wand produces is a small blast of blue light.
Liam laughs at Niall's attempt.
"I will Ducklifors jinx you," Niall says laughing.
"You wouldn't!"
"Well why don't you try then?"
"Fine!"
Niall smiles to himself. He was glad that he was able to make Liam smile.
"Expecto Patronum!" Liam says.
Similar to Niall's attempt, all that comes out of Liam's wand is a small burst of blue light.
This time Niall laughs at Liam.
"Okay, yeah maybe a bit harder than I thought," Liam admits with a smile.
An hour or so later, Professor DeVito's voice projects through the classroom.
"Well done, Mr. Malik! I've never had a student learn the Patronus charm so quickly!" (Yeah, I know it takes a lot longer to learn Expecto Patronum but- it's Zayn. He can do anything.)
The students gasp and talk amongst themselves as Zayn's patronus stalks around the classroom, taking the shape of a panther.
"Ah, yes the panther patronus," Professer DeVito says admiringly. "Associated with highly artistic and intuitive people. Someone with a panther patronus is capable of much power but is also very solitary." (That is the actual definition of a panther patronus and if that doesn't just scream Zayn, idk what does.)
Zayn smiles and watches his patronus walk around the classroom, jumping from one desk to another before dissapearing into the air.
Liam let's out a sigh of frustration.
"Hey, it's alright Payno. You'll be able to produce your patronus soon. Besides, Professer DeVito said it takes a long time to learn it. I guess Zayn's just ahead of us academically," Niall comforts him.
"Yeah, I suppose."
The students gather their books and head off to their next class. Niall can't help but notice that Liam went back to acting depressed like he was before. Something was definitely bothering him and he wasn't willing to say what.
...
The next day, the lads sit in their Astronomy class, bored out of their minds as they flip through pages of books.
"Now students, we will be studing the cycle of the moon this month. Starting today," Professor Sinistra says. "Who can tell me which night the full moon occurs on this month?" She looks around her classroom for a student who isn't paying attention. "Mr. Tomlinson."
Louis quickly picks his head up and pretends like he wasn't just sleeping. "What?"
"What night does the full moon occur on this month?"
"Oh. Erm... That would be..." Louis frantically flips through the pages of his book. "The 23rd?"
"Correct."
"Have you found that Liam is acting a bit strange lately?" Harry whispers to Louis who sits next to him.
"Yeah, Niall was telling me that he was acting depressed over the last few days," Louis whispers back.
"Any idea what's wrong with him?"
"He says nothing's wrong. Clearly he's lying."
"Yeah."
A few minutes later, Louis, Harry, and Liam sit by a large window of the classrom, huddled around a telescope.
Louis taps his quill on the stack of parchment in front of him to fill the awkward silence. He looks over to Harry as if to get him to say something to Liam.
"Sooooo... The weather?" Harry says awkwardly.
Louis facepalms and gives him an annoyed look.
"What?" Harry mouths.
"Payno, is everything alright with you?" Louis asks, trying to be helpful.
"Why do you guys keep asking me if I'm okay?! I'm fine, alright?!" Liam snaps. He grabs his books and storms out of the classroom.
"Erm, Liam, dear, class isn't over yet- oh dear," Professor Sinistra says.
Louis and Harry look at each other worriedly.
"We have to do something about him," Louis says.
...
Later that day, Louis, Harry, Niall, and Zayn all sit at a table in the Great Hall for lunch. They offered Liam to join them but he said he had to study.
"We have to find out what's wrong with Payno," Niall says, his mouthful with a ham sandwich.
"But how? He won't tell us what's wrong," Zayn reasons.
"One of us could follow and watch him without him knowing," Harry suggests.
"Stalker much?" Louis says.
"Do you have a better idea then?" Harry says, annoyed.
"Even if you try to follow him he's gonna see you eventually," Louis says.
"We need an Invisibility Cloak or a charm that can make you invisible. I don't know something like that," Niall thinks out loud.
"Niall, you're brilliant!" Zayn says suddenly.
"I am? What'd I do?"
"We can use the the Disillusionment Charm. It allows the person the charm is cast upon to blend in with their surroundings."
"Ooh, like a chameleon?" Harry asks, getting excited.
"Yes, like a chameleon." Zayn says.
"Who should we cast the charm on?" Louis asks.
"I like chameleons. They're cool."
"Harry," Zayn says as he lightly hits Harry on the head with the Daily Prophet, "Stay focused!"
"I can be the one that you put the charm on," Niall suggests.
"Neil, you are about as graceful as a baby hippogriff," Louis says.
"But they're really clumsy."
"My point exactly."
"I can cast the charm on myself," Zayn offers.
"Yeah, I think Zayn would be the best person to do it," Niall says.
They nod in agreement.
"Right, it's settled then."
*1 week later*
The five of the boys are in their Defense Against the Dark Arts class, once again practicing the patronus charm. Almost half of the class had already successfully casted their patronuses but Louis, Niall, Liam, and Harry still haven't mastered the charm.
"I feel like I'm really close!" Niall says to Liam, who's his partner again.
"That's great, Niall," Liam says with a forced smile.
"Have you thought of a happy memory yet?"
"Yeah, I think I have."
Niall smiles before trying to cast the charm again.
"Expecto Patronum!"
This time, a more powerful blue light erupts from the tip of Niall's wand. He watches in amazement and shock as the light takes the shape of an elephant.
"Wonderful job, Mr. Horan!" Professor DeVito exclaims. "The elephant patronus signifies the being of a very loving, gentle, and caring person. Often loved by many people for their friendly personalities," he explains. (Once again that is the actual definition of an elephant patronus. All of the definitions I use for their patronuses are accurate.)
Niall watches in awe as his patronus stomps around the classroom, flipping its trunk with every swift movement before fading into the air.
"Nice job, Nialler," Liam says as he wraps an arm around his friends shoulders.
"Thanks!" Niall says with a big smile on his face.
A few minutes later, Louis successfully casted his patronus.
"Well done, Mr. Tomlinson, well done! The coyote patronus is the prankster of the patronuses. Often embodying it's caster quite accurately," Professor DeVito says.
Louis smiles and watches his patronus run around the classroom, playing and interacting with students before vanishing into nothingness.
Not long after Harry was able to cast his patronus.
"Very good, Mr. Styles! The unicorn patronus is said to be quite rare. They portray their casters with a shy personality at first, but very outgoing as they become more comfortable. They are loyal and have the purest intentions."
All of the students stood talking to each other, excited about their patronuses, while Niall stood next to Liam in the back of the classroom.
"C'mon, Payno. Please try again," Niall says, trying to convince him.
"Fine. One more time," Liam says. "Expecto Patronum!"
This time the powerful blue patronus light shoots out from Liam's wand. It makes a spiral in the air before taking the form of a wolf.
"Very good, Mr. Payne! Wolf patronuses symbolize the strong bond the caster has with their loved ones. Those with wolf patronuses will protect their family and friends with a "fierce passion," but also have a playful side to them," Professor DeVito explains.
Liam stares wide-eyed as his patronus runs around the room. No smiles. Just a blank face.
"Nice job, Liam!" Niall says. "Liam? What's wrong? You just casted your patronus. Shouldn't you be happy?"
"Oh. Oh, yeah I am happy. Really," Liam says as he snaps back into reality.
"Payno, you're a terrible liar. It's blatantly obvious you're keeping something from us. You can tell us you know,"
"Niall, enough! Okay?! I'm not open to talking about it so just leave me alone!"
Professor DeVito signals the end of class just in time for Liam to storm out of the classroom and leave Niall standing in shock. He could feel tears forming in his ocean-blue eyes. He never liked being yelled at. Especially by Liam. He felt hurt. He felt like his friend was slowly drifting away from him.
...
The four of the boys sat at in the Great Hall again, while Liam was in his dormitory claiming he was studying again.
"Liam yelled at me in Defense Against the Dark Arts today..." Niall said staring of into space with a hurt expression fixed on his face.
"Why? What happened, Ni?" Zayn asked, wrapping an arm around his friend's shoulders to comfort him.
"I was trying to tell him that he doesn't have to keep secrets from us and we're always here for him and he doesn't have to hide from us and I feel like he's slowly drifting away from us and-" his voice started to break.
"Hey, hey, Niall, it's okay," Zayn says as he pulls Niall into a hug.
"I'm sorry," Niall says, "I'm just worried about him."
"It's alright. Don't be sorry. We're all worried about him, it's okay."
"Niall, I would hug you but I can't reach you from across the table," Harry says with his arms stretched out.
"I would hug you too," Louis says who is also on the other side of the table.
"Here Lou, I can give you a hug," Harry says as he pulls Louis into a hug.
"Thanks, Haz."
"Okay, so have we decided that I'm going to follow Liam later today with the Disillusionment Charm?" Zayn asks.
"Yeah, sounds like a plan," Louis says.
The boys finish their lunch before heading off to the rest of their classes.
...
After their classes the four of them meet in the courtyard of the school.
"Zayn, have you ever performed the Disillusionment Charm before?" Harry asks.
"I've been practicing all week," Zayn says.
"Have you been successful?"
"Erm... not really...," he admits.
"We don't have much time we have to perform the charm and go find Liam soon," Louis points out.
"Right, I'll do my best," Zayn says.
He makes his way to the middle of the courtyard and twirl his wand over his head. A faint white light spurts from his wand but quickly fades away.
"Ugh. Hold on, let me try again."
He twirls the wand over his head once again, this time a stronger white light shoots from the tip of his wand, wrapping around his body almost like a rope. In the blink of an eye, it it looks like Zayn has disappeared but he's actually blending in with his surroundings.
"It worked!" Niall exclaimed.
"Great job! Okay, Zayn? Z- Zayn? Where'd you go?" Louis asks. He holds out his arms trying to map out where Zayn is.
Zayn sneaks up behind Louis without him knowing and throws his hood over his head.
"Ha. Yes, very funny," Louis says with a smile. He reaches his hands out and grabs Zayn by the shoulders. "Alright, Zayn we need to be serious now," Louis says, looking where he assumed his friends face to be.
"You're not even looking at me in the face," Zayn says, laughing.
"I said serious!"
Niall and Harry stand together, laughing quietly as they watch Lou struggle.
"You have to go find Liam, figure out what's bothering him, and don't bump into anyone or anything. Got it?"
"Yep!"
"Alright, good luck!" Louis says as he goes to pat Zayn on the shoulder but hits him in the face instead.
"Ow!"
"Oops! Sorry,"
Niall and Harry laugh and don't bother to try and stay quiet this time.
...
'If I were Liam, where would I be?' Zayn thinks to himself as he walks down a corridor.
'He could literally be anywhere. Hogwarts is so big there's a very small chance that I'll even be able to find him,' the voice in Zayn's head says.
He walks in and out of classrooms, no Liam, out on the school grounds, no Liam, on the Quidditch field, no Liam. He finally decides to sit outside the Gryffindor Common Room for a few minutes in hopes Liam will walk out. Still no luck.
'This is pointless,' he thinks. 'Wait, oh my god I'm such an idiot. I didn't even check the Great Hall!'
He facepalms himself and quickly runs down to the Great Hall, carefully making sure he doesn't make too much noise in the empty hall way.
He steps into the Great Hall and sure enough, finds Liam sitting at the Gryffindor table. He squeezes by other students, making sure to not brush up against anyone. He makes it to Liam and finds him huddled around a book. His arms lay on either side of it and his head blocking the view of anyone who tries to see what he's reading from over his shoulder.
Zayn tilts his head as much he can but can't clearly see what Liam's reading. Suddenly, Liam stands up and makes his way over to the door. Zayn walks in front of Liam, walking just fast enough so Liam won't run into him. He walks off to the side to let Liam pass him and follows him down the corridor. Zayn decides to take his shoes off so Liam can't hear them echoing on the floor.
He follows Liam to the flight of stairs leading down to the dungeons. He steps carefully, making sure he doesn't trip down the stairs. Liam doesn't seem to notice that he's there which is a good sign.
They continue to walk down the hall until Liam turns into the potions classroom. Zayn slips into the classroom behind his friend before the door can close on him.
"Good afternoon, Professor," Liam says.
"Ah, hello Mr. Payne!" Professor Slughorn says. (I wasn't really sure who the potions teacher was after Snape so... it's gonna be Slughorn now.)
"I'm very sorry, my boy, but I wasn't able to make anymore. I didn't have enough ingredients. Rubeus wasn't able to get me any more myrrh for the potion and I already gave away my last bottle. I'm very sorry," Slughorn apologizes.
"That's alright, Professor," Liam says. "I think I should be alright without it."
'What's "it"?! Zayn thinks to himself in frustration. 'What are they talking about?!'
"If you need any help, please let me know."
"I will. Thank you, Professor."
"Be safe, my boy!"
"I'll do my best. Have a good day," Liam says as he opens the door.
Zayn quickly follows behind him and out the door.
'What did Liam need? Is he okay? What's happening?' Millions of questions raced through Zayn's head that he wished he knew the answers to.
He followed Liam back up to the Gryffindor Common Room where Liam went inside but Zayn let the door close without following him.
"I have to find the boys," Zayn says out loud.
As he raced down the halls, he started to notice the charm wearing off. He was able to see his feet running underneath him but the rest of his body was still camouflaged.
He came out onto the courtyard to find the other three playing Wizard Chess.
"I win!" Niall says.
"No you didn't. You cheated!" Harry complains.
"Does it really matter, Harry?" Louis asks.
"Boys, I'm back!" Zayn says.
"Oh my god you're just legs!" Niall says, freaked out.
"Yeah, I know. The charm is wearing off but never mind that."
"What did you find out?" Louis asks.
"I followed Liam down to the potions classroom where he was talking to Slughorn and they were talking about some potion. I guess Liam needed the potion but Slughorn didn't have anymore," Zayn explains.
"They didn't say what the potion was?" Harry asks.
"No, they didn't."
"This doesn't make sense. Why would Liam need a potion?" Louis asks.
"I have no idea," Zayn says. "Slughorn said that Hagrid wasn't able to get him any myrrh for the potion. Whatever that is,"
"I've never heard of myrrh before," Niall says.
"Me neither," Harry agrees.
"I really don't know what to do about Liam," Louis says, concerned.
"I don't think any of us do," Zayn says sadly.
...
*One week later*
The four boys sit in the Great Hall eating dinner. Liam has been acting weirder with everyday and there's nothing they can do about it.
"I borrowed a book from the library about myrrh," Zayn says. "And it's says it's uses can be for divination, healing, hex removal, moon rituals, the list goes on."
"But there's no way of knowing what Liam needed it for. Or what he needed to potion for," Niall says.
They all sit in silence eating their dinner when an owl flies into the room and lands on the table in front of the boys. It's a great grey owl and it carries a letter in its beak.
"That's Liam's owl, Loki," Harry says.
"Liam's owl?" Niall says.
"Yeah, and he's got a letter," Louis says as he takes the letter from the bird's beak.
Louis quickly opens the envelope to reveal a letter in Liam's handwriting.
To Niall, Louis, Zayn, and Harry,
Hi boys. I don't know how else to say this, but what I do want to say is I'm sorry. I'm sorry for keeping secrets from you guys and yelling at you when all you we're trying to do was make sure I was okay. I just didn't want to hurt any of you or put you in danger. If I'm not back by morning, please don't come looking for me. It's what's best for all of us. I love you boys.
From,
Liam
Louis read the letter out loud.
"Hurt us?" Niall asks, confused.
"I don't understand," Harry says.
"Zayn, what we're the uses of myrrh again?" Louis asks, keeping his eyes glued to the letter.
"Erm... divination, healing, hex removal, moon rituals-"
"Moon rituals"? So would Wolfsbane Potion be "moon ritual" related?" Louis says, eyes wide.
"Yeah, you could say that," Zayn says still confused.
"What's Wolfsbane Potion?" Harry asks.
"It's a potion that prevents those who have been bitten by werewolves from turning into a werewolf on the full moon," Louis explains.
They were all catching on now.
"What day is it?" Niall asks.
"The 23rd," Zayn says
"The night of the full moon...," Louis says. "Liam's a werewolf."
