What If Mr. L took the Music Box?

AN: Based on "My Music Box". If you haven't read it yet, I suggest reading it first because otherwise this won't make much sense!

Takes place in the middle of chapter three of that story! Just before L goes to confront the heroes for the second time! All events leading up to this are exactly the same as in the "My Music Box" Story!

2nd Person Mr. L POV:

Maybe, you think to yourself, Maybe I should give him the box before I leave.

You stop by your room to get your new and improved robotic brother and stare at it a moment.

.....Nah, you tell yourself. I'll give it to him when I get back.

......

You walk halfway out of the room, before stopping and turning to look at it. It's just sitting right there. You don't know why, but something is telling you that you're about to make the biggest mistake of your life.

You quickly glance outside of your room, down the hall, then back at the box, before quickly running and grabbing it. Then, you're off.

You don't give it to him yet. You don't really see him again before you get to the ruined world, but you feel somewhat comforted by having it on you. As if.... it will protect you somehow?

I see you've brought the box, the annoying voice says, happiness in his tone. I'm glad you're finally giving it to him!

I'm not giving it to him yet. I'm just.... keeping it on me, you tell the voice.

Why?

I DON'T KNOW! COULD YOU SHUT UP FOR ONCE. I NEED TO FOCUS ON STOPPING THE HEROES!

And the voice goes silent. Good, you think. Then, you move forward, not giving the box or the voice much thought.

______

You lose to the heroes, of course. You'll always lose to them, no matter what you change or what you do, but it still stings. Is that why Dimentio wanted you to come here? So you could just lose? So you could feel like garbage? You fail to see how coming here could benefit him in any way.

You don't understand.

"Aha ha ha. Did they wound your fragile pride, Mr. L? Demolish your robot again?"

You should have known.

You turn to face him, and... smile. For some sick reason, you're happy to see him. You think... maybe he's here to comfort you.

You're an idiot, and you don't know why you'd think such an outlandish, unreasonable thing.

"Oh, it's you again Dimentio. I'm stumped. You'd think a giant robot would be enough to crush these heroes."

You turn, and truly do feel like the failure you are. You don't want to look like a failure in front of him.

But, he doesn't know that. So you act like you're afraid of what the count will think. Yes, that's believable. You act as if Dimentio's thoughts and views of you don't matter.

They do, but you don't tell him that.

"I'm a disgrace. There's no way I could show my face to Count Bleck after this."

"Perhaps that is for the best," He says, in a completely normal tone.

He's still acting. Why is he still acting?! It's just you two here. Your heart skips a beat, as you begin to feel as if you're in danger, even though the heroes are gone.

You slowly turn to face him, frowning.

Then, he waves his arms. A small explosion goes off from under your feet. You quickly jump back to avoid getting burned.

The voice is silent. You feel like it should be talking right now, but it isn't. You find yourself kinda missing it.

"Whoa, Now! Hey! What are you doing?!" You ask, trying to remain calm.

But, it's hard to be calm. You know what he's about to do. You don't even have to ask. You know.

This is what you didn't want him doing. This was it.

"You said it yourself! You can't go back to the count now. So get lost."

Ouch. Still hurt to hear it.

You decide to try to keep your cool. How would your character act during this scene.

The voice is still silent. Come on, you tell it. Now you choose to be silent?!

You just do what your character would do. If he's acting, then so can you.

"Not a funny joke, Dimentio. If I wanted to laugh, your face is inspiration enough!"

You wish the voice didn't shut up.

"Such temper. Your nostrils, they flare out like the hood of a hissing cobra," he replies. Your smile drops, as he floats closer.

You stare into his icy eyes. But there's nothing in them. You search for something, but there's nothing. There was always nothing. You had hoped that someday you'd see something.

You still hope that someday you'll see something.

But there is nothing.

You can hear your heartbeat in your ears. You wonder if this would still be happening if you were brave enough to give him the box.

Wait.... the box.

"I can't have you around the count. If I am rid of you here, I won't be found out."

You find yourself confused, as you think about the small box in your back pocket. He looks at you, and frowns slightly, seeing that you're somewhat distracted. You're guessing that he expected you to be anything BUT distracted.

But then he smiles that evil little smile again and continues.

"And the others will never find you. Yes, this is my moment to grasp. It's time for you to take your final bow, Mr. L."

He flicks his wrist, and a glass box appears around you. But you don't jump. You hardly react. You just stand there, thinking about the box in your back pocket.

No, you tell yourself. The box will do nothing.

Will it? The other voice asks, finally chiming in.

You blink a few times, and look up at Dimentio. He's just standing there, waiting for you to react. You can see in his eyes that he's pondering why you aren't afraid.

After a moment, he continues his dialogue, when it's clear you're not going to respond. You just stand there, silent and unafraid

"Ah ha ha ha ha, Shhhhh. Don't worry. It won't be so bad, I promise. I'll send those heroes your way soon, just so you'll have someone to play with."

You're going to give him the box.

It's now or never.

It's quite ridiculous, really. You're standing here, about to die, and all you can do is give him a stupid box.

"You know...." You whisper, placing a hand on the yellow glass, looking up at him. "I made you something."

His wicked smile falters for a second, but he stays silent.

"I actually have it right here," You say, reaching for the box in your back pocket. "It's just something I made for you. Don't ask me why, because I don't know."

He gives you an almost confused look.

You pull out the box, and hold it out in front of you.

"Before you move along with your plan and kill me, which you'll obviously do, would you mind taking it. Please. Just do this one thing for me."

You look down.

"Please. That's all I ask of you."

The two of you wait in silence for a moment. He says nothing.

Did he even hear you?

You expect to hear the snap of his fingers, and explosions going off.

You expect your story to end.

But, it doesn't.

Instead, you hear the sound of the box dispersing. You look up at him, and he's standing in front of you, a blank expression on his face.

Then, he holds a hand out. You smile, and place the box on it. He gives it a confused glance, then looks at you.

"It's..." He starts. "A music box?"

You nod. "Yes. I made it from spare parts," you say, almost proudly. "Would you like to listen?"

He shakes his head, no, and takes a long look at the box, before handing it back to you. "Mr. L, I don't have the time for whatever games you're playing."

He floats back a few feet, and turns around, refusing to face you. You let out a disappointed sigh as the execution box forms around you, and look down at the box in your hands.

Failure, you think to yourself. Of course it wouldn't change anything. Of course it wouldn't do anything! I'm an idiot.

Play it for him, the voice says. It didn't work because you haven't played it for him.

Seriously?! You're kidding, right?! You saw him! There's no stopping him from doing this, you argue.

Well, then don't play it for him. But he's going to kill you. Don't you want to at least try?

You freeze, then look up at Dimentio. His back is still turned away from you. You wish you could read his emotions. It's so hard to do with the mask on.

You make a good point, random voice in my head, you think, smiling slightly.

Please, call me Luigi, it says. Now hurry, play the box before it's to late!

Dimentio raises his hand, and presses his middle finger to his thumb on his left hand, preparing to snap and fill the box with deadly explosions which will surely kill you on the spot.

You quickly take the box in your hands, and crank the handle a few times, then hold it up.

The music plays.

(AN: If you want, play the video at the top now! It's the music box sounds for this story I use!)

And you see his hand.... tense up.

And he waits there, frozen, as the music plays. You're sweating, because could could die at any moment now. But the music plays it's soft tune.

After a moment, he slowly lowers his hand. You feel as if a weight has been lifted off your chest. But he still refuses to face you. He lowers himself to the ground, and just faces away, as the calm melody plays.

The room is silent other than the box. There is nothing, but two men standing there in silence. One with the power to kill the other with the snap of his fingers, and the other, you. An idiot with a music box.

It's all you have though.

It's all you have.

But, he hasn't killed you yet. He hasn't done anything yet.

"Dimentio?" You quietly ask, and he flinches.

"Dimentio," You repeat, as the box continues to play. "Can you look at me? Please?"

He doesn't turn to face you. You hope that when he kills you, he at least looks you in the eye as he does it.

"Why...." He mutters. "Why did you make this?"

You see him tense up, still refusing to face you. You look down at the box as the crank gently spins with the box as the melody plays.

Tell him why! The voice, you mean, Luigi, urges.

How can I tell him when I don't even know why, you respond.

Come on, you know why! Luigi says.

You pause.

Do you really not know why?! I mean, it seems fairly obvious... Luigi giggles.

You know?! You think. Can you tell me?!

Well, it's because you love him, he says.

You frown.

Come on, think about it. You immediately were concerned for him. You made him a box out of spare parts because you had a feeling he was going to do something bad and get himself hurt. You don't just do that for anyone.

I suppose.....

Tell him, Luigi chimes. You have to tell him.

"I made it because...." You start.

You look at the back of Dimentio's head, and sigh. "Can you face me when I say this?"

He clenches his fists before turning to face you. You immediately notice that his eyes are no longer empty.

You see tears in his eyes.

He's smiling, but it appears more forced. You can tell it's getting harder for him to act.

"Why. Did. You. Do. This?" He spits. "What are you doing?! Trying to confuse me?! Trying to throw me off?!"

"No," You reply. "I'm trying to save you."

"FROM WHAT?!"

"From making the biggest mistake of your life," You reply, unafraid. For some strange reason, you have never felt so calm.

"Why do you care? I have things to do L. I can't keep wasting time," He says. But his words and smile betray his eyes. His eyes aren't empty. There's something there.

"I care.... because I love you," You say. You didn't know it, until now. But you do. You've never felt so sure about anything in your life. You don't know why you feel this way, but you do.

His smile falters. You take a step back, and hold the box out to him, the execution box being the only thing preventing you from handing it to him.

His eyes flicker from you to the box. ack and forth, as the melody continues playing.

He shakes his head. "Why...." He says, voice shaky. "Why are you doing this?!"

"You don't have to do whatever you're planning. It doesn't matter. We can leave. We can be happy. We can be safe. Just.... don't do it please," you say. "Please, Dimentio."

"You don't understand, L. I have plans. I.... I can't just give up on them!"

"Why not?" You ask.

He doesn't answer.

He looks so many things right now. Afraid, confused, unsure. But not empty. You can't help but smile.

"I'm here for you," You say, still holding the box out as it plays. "You don't have to be like this. You can be anything. We can do anything! We can run away and find out own perfect world! We can escape all this! We.... we can do anything you want."

His eyes are glassy. You're getting to him. You're really getting to him.

I told you it would work, Luigi says. I just knew it.

Don't get to excited, you think to him. It hasn't worked yet.

"But...." Dimentio starts. "I'm in too deep. I can't get out of this now."

You smile at him. "Then I'll help you out of this. You don't have to do this alone. You, me, we can get out of this together! You don't have to be alone!"

And.... he slowly smiles a smile you've never seen before, as a tear softly falls down his mask.

"You don't have to be the villain," You say. "You don't have to wear that mask. You can be anything you want to be."

He looks at the box.... then slowly snaps his fingers, making the execution box disappear. Then, he slowly walks up to you....

And takes his mask off.

"Okay."

You smile, and hand him the music box, gazing at his real face for the first time ever. His skin is a greyish pigment, his hair is black. But his eyes and his smile are the same.

You beam, and hold out a hand, before taking it, and walking forward, the box still playing.

And the two of you walk off, in search of a perfect world.

You never look back.

You just hold his hand, and walk forward.

______

Third Person POV (Just some info on how this changes things!)

After this, Dimentio briefly visits all the heroes, telling them of Jaydes, and how she'll most certainly be able to revive the broken pure heart, then he wishes them all the best, and offers help in aiding them to get the pure hearts. They are all skeptical of him, of course, but Tippi can tell that this time, he's being genuine. He's no longer wearing the mask and acting.

He keeps L out of it, knowing that if they found out he was in control of Luigi's body, problems would surely arise. Once the heroes made it to castle Bleck, they had used the power of the pure hearts to defeat Count Bleck, closing the void. He was lost, but not before Blumiere and Timpani had one final moment together.

Sadly, the count couldn't be saved. The one in control of the chaos heart had to have their game ended in order for the void to close. Timpani cried, and was never truly the same. The rest of the minions refused to speak with Dimentio, blaming him for aiding the heroes and helping them destroy the count. But in the end, what's done is done.

And lastly, Mr. L and Dim search for a way to free Luigi. The voice in L's head which helped him save Dimentio. After searching for who knows how long, they were able to find a spell which separated the two. Luigi was able to return home and be with his family, back in control at last.

And Dimentio and Mr. L found their perfect world, out there on their own. They found happiness, never looking back. Only moving forward, not hiding themselves.

Years and years past, and Dimentio kept the music box. Whenever he grew lonely or sad, he'd listen to it. Even long after L was long gone. Normal humans had significantly shorter lifespans. But, even after L was gone, Dimentio would listen to the box, and be put at ease, knowing someone loves him. Someone wants him safe. Knowing L made this box for him.

He'll be reunited in the Overthere with him someday.

And when that time comes, they'll do what they always do. Move forward. Together.
