Chapter 6: Zap! : 3-1-16 and 3-2-16
Dark grey clouds suddenly started filling the sky. Merry and I were aboard orcs backs again as they ran. Suddenly heavy, fat silver raindrops started falling down. We were still damp from the night before, so we didn't mind. It actually felt quite nice. We tipped back our heads and opened our mouths in hope for raindrops to fall in.
I guessed it was about six in the morning. The rain was getting harder and I could hear thunder booming far ahead in the distance. I counted three loud booms, which meant the real storm was about three miles forward. I looked up at the sky again and a raindrop kissed my nose. After I blew off the wet kiss, I saw monstrous zigzagging golden bolts flowing through the sky. Lightning.
The orcs didn't seem to mind. It was now pouring and the cold gusts of wind made our wet bodies shiver. Merry eventually fell asleep, which reminded me I was exhausted too. We hadn't slept since we were by Fangorn. Merry's head was bobbing up and down as the orc ran. His bandage, from the looks of it, was getting soggy and he probably should get a fresh one soon.
I was about to close my sleepy eyes when I heard a noise that was ear piercingly loud. Louder than the fireworks Merry and I set off. Merry was now awake and alert. We soon found out that the noise was lightning striking our metal swords, not just the ground. The orc that had been holding them wasn't as lucky as the swords. The swords stayed in contact, but not the orc. He was fried black. Foggy smoke filled the air around him.
Ugluk looked down at the swords trying to think of a way to get them to Isengard with all the lightning attracted to it.
"Leav'em here!" one yelled.
"Make the Halfling hold 'em" another said as orcs laughed.
"No!" snarled Ugluk, "Have you not remembered what Sauromon's orders are?" spit shooting from his mouth, "We take Halflings and everything that they were carrying to Isengard unspoiled." He paused for a moment as another bolt of lightning zapped the swords, then said, "We will wait here for the storm to pass."
The orcs carrying us gladly dropped us and stood far away from the swords that received an occasional zap of lightning. Merry and I schooched to each other far away from our swords. It was freezing and we huddled close for some warmth. We watched as the dirt covered ground got muddy and eventually flooded. We schooched again to a small hill, so we wouldn't get too muddy more wet. It was scary watching enormous bolts of lightning flash all around us. The scariest part was watching the lightning hit out small metal swords. Something we would never forget. We eventually dozed off, unaware of the ferocious storm around us.
