Part XVIII- A Grand Return

I woke up the next morning to the bright sun that beamed down on us, as if urging us to get going. I sat up and rubbed my eyes In an attempt to get the sleep out. I felt someone staring at me, so I looked for the source and was a little frightened when I saw Bilbo staring at me, no emotions played on his face. I thought he was looking past me so I turned and looked but there weren't nothing to see. I looked back at Bilbo. I felt a lot of pity for him, it still amazes me to this day, how something so small could change, even the best of a person evil.  I stayed where I was and remembered Aragorn's words, "Bilbo is still Bilbo, you just have to search for him."

"Hello Bilbo, did you sleep well?" I asked him.

He didn't say anything but kept staring. I tried once more.

"Are you hungry?"

I saw a faint spark of light in the old hobbit's eyes. I smiled. I looked around the camp and saw everyone was still asleep. "It's just Bilbo," I said to me self. I grabbed my bag and dug around the bottom, hoping to find something, even just a piece of old bread. My fingers felt something and I recognized it as a piece of dried fruit.

I looked at Bilbo and said, "Isn't much but we will be home soon."

He smiled eagerly at the food I held in my hand. I crawled over and as I held my hand out to give it to him he suddenly reached out and grabbed my arm with an sudden burst of strength. I was so surprised I only let out a gasp. He stood over me and started to dig through my pockets. He then looked at me with such hatred and frustration and I was certain this was the end of me.

When suddenly the point of a sword was put to under Bilbo's chin. Out of fear he let me go and I scrambled away. It was then I looked up to see Aragorn standing there, gripping the hilt of his sword. Bilbo turned his back on us and rocked back and forth. Whether he was mumbling or crying I couldn't tell.

"What did you hope to accomplish?" The ranger asked with an annoyed tone of voice as he put his weapon back.

"He was just hungry and he is still Bilbo. You said that yourself."

"True he is still Bilbo on the inside, but on the surface is an evil being who would kill with no second thoughts."

I looked down and said, "He was looking for the Ring."

Aragorn said nothing. He then patted me on the shoulder and walked off the wake the others.

I looked back at Bilbo to see he again sat there, staring off in space, as if nothing had happened. I gave a shudder as I thought of what could have happened if Aragorn had not stepped in. As the others awoke Gandalf said,

"As we are close to Rivendell we shall travel quicker and further today."

No one argued and we headed out. The journey was quick. Stopping a few miles before Galadriel' s home toward the afternoon.

"Are we to deliver the ring to her now?" Boromir asked.

Gandalf shook his head, "We shall wait until the council. "

"We gave Fundin the dwarf rings." Boromir challenged.

"Yes and do you believe he would have been any kinder to us if we had kept them back?" Gandalf replied.

Boromir had no answer to give. We rested only a few minuets, seeing as we were eager to be getting home. We again climbed on the ponies and rushed off.

We stopped in view of the home of Elrond.

"Rivendell!" Merry exclaimed.

Gimli smiled, "Never in all my days have I been so excited to see a place full of elves."

We all chuckled and rode the last miles into the Rivendell. We were greeted with song and poems only as elves can sing. The graceful sounds traveled through us and lifted our spirits. As we dismounted from the ponies, Elrond himself hurried out to meet us.

"Welcome back, come inside, rest and eat heartily."

The ponies were well looked after and we made our way inside. It was as beautiful as I remembered. We were led to a large table, were we made ourselves comfortable as enormous quantities of food were laid out before us. Elrond noticed Bilbo and smiled sadly.

"I have something that may help Bilbo." He said to Gandalf, who nodded.

Elrond left the room and returned a short while later with a blue crystal bottle.

"What will that do for him?" Frodo asked

"It will take over the darkness that consumes his brain and give him peace for a short amount of time. He can eat and enjoy your company, then he shall be put to bed to sleep."

"Will he ever go back to the old  Bilbo?" Pippin asked.

"When one goes through an experience such as this, they will never be the same, but there is hope for progress."

Pippin, satisfied with the answer, continued to eat. We watched as Bilbo was given the drink. He took it eagerly and after a few moments his eyes regained that sparkle of his. He looked around at us then at Elrond and gave a smile.

"How do you feel?" Gandalf asked

Bilbo looked at the wizard and replied, "I feel as if I haven't slept in days."

"I suspect you are hungry as well?" Aragorn added.

Bilbo nodded, "I suppose I am."

We could not help but stare as he ate the plate full that was laid before him. After a few bites he looked to us and said,

"Aren't you all hungry?"

"Sorry, but it is so good to see you." Gandalf said happily.

Bilbo let out a familiar chuckle and said, "I haven't been gone have I?"

"Worlds away." Frodo said.

Bilbo smiled at his nephew, "You've got a good imagination on you, Frodo my boy. Just as I had when I was-"

He stopped suddenly and frowned, looking down at his plate. He then looked at us, "I'm not very hungry."

"I am sure you are quiet thirsty." Elrond said as he held out a cup.

Bilbo nodded as he accepted the cup and drank it all in one gulp. He set the cup down and let out a yawn.

"I believe I shall go rest now."

We wished him goodbye and watched as he left the table. An elf helped to escort him up to his room.  As he left the room we sat in silence until I asked,

"What happened?"

"The medicine wore off."Legolas sighed.

"But it lasted only a few minuets."

"Bilbo has been through so much, too much for a small amount of elfish medicine to cure." replied Elrond

"Lets rejoice in our safe return tonight." Gimli said cheerfully.

"Fireworks!" Pippin exclaimed

Aragorn laughed and looked to Gandalf who nodded his approval. "After much darkness we have endured, we shall light the night sky."

That evening, as we gathered around in the warm night air, Gandalf let off firework after firework. Explosions of  red, yellow, green and blue light the sky in amazing shapes and forms. Bilbo had slept all the day and was up with us to gaze at the wondrous lights.

Pippin and Merry showed maturity, by not setting off any fireworks on their own. Although, the old gruff wizard did allow them to help set off a couple.

"A wonderful end to an adventure." I said to Frodo.

"And the beginning of another one." He replied.

"Let's not think of tomorrow, let it take care of itself."

We stood, gazing at the sky, much like the night Tauriel joined the stars. I smiled to myself as her memory flooded my mind. She would have loved this.

Gandalf looked over at Bilbo then said to himself, "I'm glad to see he still remembers my fireworks."
