Chapter twenty one
TW: Suicide mentions, hearts breaking, crying
Turns out, the counselor was right, the public speaking class became better and better as the hour passed. It was actually kind of fun. They reviewed public speeches and ted talks, and were assigned a group project.
They were assigned to pick out a famous speech from someone from the 18 to 1900's, it could be anyone through that time period that they wanted. Then, they were to analyze and write a paper based on what they had learned from it. Then, one person presents it while the others flipped through pictures on the huge smart board in front of the class.
It seemed easy enough, sounded fun, and was a great learning opportunity for them.
Plus, it would be a challenge because the whole paper had to be five minutes or less. Roman never backed down from a challenge.
Soon enough, they had picked a topic, agreeing to meet up after class to begin the project.
So, once the bell rang they got packed up and got onto their school bus. They talked the whole ride, and all agreed to meet up at Logan's to start the project since he had a computer that didn't have the slowest internet in the world.
"What'll happen if I type "P" into your google search bar?" Roman asked, smirking.
Logan scoffed, "don't be ridiculous, I use my phone for that kind of stuff."
"Yeah, well I use my laptop" Roman joked, smirking.
"Welp, that's my stop" Logan interrupted, "c'mon Pat."
They got up, bidding their friends goodbye.
"Hey" the bus driver said, stopping Patton, "you can't get off here. Your house isn't over here."
"Well guess what, he's coming weather you like it or not, he can't go to his house anyways." Logan hissed, grabbing Patton's hand, leading him off of the bus.
The bus driver growled, shutting the door and driving off angrily.
"Oof" Roman whispered to Virgil, who chuckled in response.
"So, Virgil, you know how Logan and Patton are..basically a thing?"
Virgil nodded, looking at Roman skeptically.
"Well, they aren't official yet, and Logan told me he wasn't sure he wanted to make it official....he says their personalities don't exactly match up, and he isn't putting in as much effort as Patton and he fears he's taking advantage-Poor guy doesn't know how to break it to Patton" Roman sighed.
Virgil frowned. That was a shame, they were a real cute couple.
"He says he has his eyes on someone else. Don't know who yet" Roman said casually.
Virgil nodded. He wasn't usually like this-but he was living for the gossip.
"Yeah, and let me tell you a secret.." he blushed, lowering his voice, "I kind of sort of like Patton."
Virgil's eyes widened as he gasped. He smacked Roman's shoulder, and smirked at him.
"SHEHHEHSHSHSHSHSHSGSHSH" Roman shushed, "You cannot tell anyone about this!"
'I won't. Scout's honor' he signed.
"...Were you even a scout?"
'That's not important right now' he smirked.
"I told you because I was hoping you'd have some advice for him? You know, to break it off smoothly?"
Virgil gave him a deadpan look, 'do I look like the type of guy who's scored any dates before?''
"Fair point, fair point...got anything in that brain of yours though? C'mon you're in AP psychology!"
'Well, sometimes people rush into relationships when they're young just because someone is cute. Logan may have liked Patton originally because he was cute or bubbly, but because they didn't know each other on a deeper level, they didn't realize that they weren't actually interested in each other until they got a little too far in. My advice? Just be honest.'
"That makes sense..."
'The first day I met you at that bathroom, i'll admit, I went home and gushed to Remy. But after getting to know you, no offense, but you're not my type. Waaaay too energetic and loud and all that...not to say you aren't a good friend though, you're great.'
"Okay first off..OMG YOU THOUGHT I WAS HOT?!! THANK YOUUUU!!" He squealed, "secondly, oh my god, you're gay? ALL FOUR OF US ARE GAY?!" He exclaimed.
Virgil sighed, before smirking
"And I also crushed on you too because you were cute by the way" Roman said, "but you're right-we are very, very different and I wouldn't really see this working pit in the end."
Virgil nodded. Good to have all that cleared up, because he was kind of worried that Roman liked him still.

After everyone was dropped off and gathered their things, they headed to Logan's house where they began their research. They goofed off, doing impressions of the people they researched, and joking around about them, but ultimately, picked a speech, and began to analyze it.
They prepared their speech, and timed Roman as he began to read off the paper.
"FIVE MINUTES AND SEVEN SECONDS!!" Patton cheered after minutes of adjusting their paper to make it shorter, and making it faster to say, without making it impossible to comprehend.
'Okay, okay, okay, let's takeout a few of the big words and replace them with smaller ones' Virgil suggested.
"Alright" Patton agreed, erasing and rewriting.
"Okay. On the count of three, i'll start the timer."
"Three, two, one..GO!"
"After reading, analyzing, and comprehending the meanings behind this speech, the message we've decided to take home is.."
After Roman finished reading the entirety of the speech, Patton screamed in excitement. "FOUR MINUTES AND FIFTY EIGHT SECONDS!!!"
"WHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" They screamed out in joy.
"Alright, now we need to prepare the Speech on a powerpoint with pictures to hook up to the school computer..we've got this!"

The next day, it turned out, they did have it. The speech was presented with no difficulty, and Roman's loud, confident voice boomed loudly through the room, and the teachers were pleased with the detailed pictures they managed to find, which went together perfectly with the message of the presentation.
They got an A+, and were ecstatic, cheering and celebrating as soon as they were notified about their grades.
After class, Virgil was informed to head to the school counselor. He walked in nervously and sat down.
"So, Virgil, about your class change. How do you feel? Still want to change?" She asked.
He thought long and hard. This class was actually pretty fun. His classmates were actually amazing, none of them ever brought up his mini panic attack, or made dun of him for it, and this was the one class he got to be with all of his friends in.
He smiled at the counselor, grabbed the small notepad he kept in his pocket, and wrote 'Actually, the class has proved to be really great. I think i'm going to stay.'
The counselor smiled brightly, "oh, that's amazing! I'll inform your teachers that you cannot speak, and that should be enough for them."
He thanked her, and headed out to his bus, telling his friends about it. They were excited.

A week passed, and Logan couldn't take it anymore.
He couldn't take the way Patton looked at him with adoration in his eyes, only for Logan to give a small, fake smile because he didn't like him that way anymore.
He had thought, perhaps, that Patton was drifting away as well. He seemed to be getting less into kisses and any act that could be considered anything more than a friendly hug.
Though that could just be the trauma speaking.
Later that Friday night, Logan took Patton's hand and told him that he needed to talk. As the time passed, he tried to convince himself that he was just confused. That he loved Patton with all of his heart. But he just couldn't do it.
He fell out of love with Patton.
"Patton, you know how we-how we aren't exactly official in our relationship?"
Patton's eyes sparked-Logan noticed it was something of excitement.
'Oh god, feelings' he shuddered.
"Well, I just wanted to tell you that..I don't think we ever will be."
Patton's eyes immediately lost that glimmer of hope as his mouth gaped open like a fish out of water, "what..?"
"I-I've been noticing lately that I don't want to..spend my life with you, I don't see you as a boyfriend, but as a best friend. I do love you, but the love has just..turned platonic."
Patton ripped his hand away from Logan's, "W-what are you saying?!" He whispered.
"I'm saying..that..I can't be with you."
Patton's eyes filled with tears of pain, and in that moment, Logan felt like he could hear Patton's heart break through an achy sob as he grabbed his items, stuffed them messily into his bag, and ran from the room, and out of the house.
Logan was frozen in place, filled with guilt and regret, but he couldn't just keep leading Patton on, he needed to be truthful.
Logan groaned, "was I too..rough? Should I have been more gentle in telling him?! Oh, god, I suck at this..." he whispered to himself, hiding his face in his hands. He felt tears forming in his eyes but he harshly brushed them away.
He knew he should have been more gentle-he just couldn't tell when it wasn't enough emotion! It was never enough emotion with him though..he would never be enough, would he?
He immediately gabbed his phone, added Roman and Virgil into a group chat, and texted them something.
Logan: I've screwed the pooch.

Roman and Virgil gave Logan advice, and listened to him as he explained everything. Both were shocked, initially, but knew it was inevitable.
Then, something hit Virgil.
Virgil: Um, Logan? You said Patton ran out of your house, right?
Logan: Yes, why?
Virgil: oh my god, for someone who claims to be so smart, you really r dumb, WHERE IN THE BLOODY HECK IS PATTON?!
Roman: Jesus christ, I hadn't thought about that
Logan: oh god you don't think he would kill himself over this would you?!
Roman: isn't there a bridge near your house?!
Logan: Oh my god

Patton sobbed loudly, running from Logan's house. He couldn't believe it.
Well, he could. Who would want to be with a-with a freak like him? He ran past rows upon rows of houses, until a familiar one popped up into his view. Through his blurred vision, he sniffled, wiping the tears from under his glasses, and as soon as he tried to knock on the door, that was the exact moment that it opened, and Patton accidentally punched Roman in the face.
"CHRIST, WHAT THE HEL- Patton?" Roman asked.
"I-I'm sorry!" he sobbed, "b-b-but I had nowhere to go and I need my best friend right now-"
"Patton, Patton, come in i'm sorry- I was just coming out to look for you, me, Logan and Virgil were so worried about you, I need to tell them you're okay!"
He shot a quick text to the group chat as he lead Patton to his room. Patton set his bag down, and hugged Roman.
Roman listened to Patton, and Patton was grateful for the shoulder he had to cry on. That was how Roman's mom found him the next morning, Patton snuggled up to Roman's chest, bright red tear stains going down Patton's cheeks.
She closed the door, kind of worried, but ultimately decided to not disturb them.
She decided she'd make some Pancakes for them, with Strawberry eyes, a blueberry nose, and a bacon smile, topped with a whipped cream hat, with a side of cheesy eggs.
She'd known Patton long enough to know his favorite breakfast. And she always was forced to listen to her son simping over him.
She felt horrible for the poor boy. She knew what had happened-it was all over the news, everyone knew what happened-she hoped her other son, Remus would end up behind bars for what he'd done, along with that Janus and Bryce.
A/n: Also, I have NO CLUE how people can wake up and eat huge breakfasts because I am absolutely disgusted by not only breakfast, but breakfast foods. Ya'll with me? I'm not weird right?
HOLY CRAP I JUST ABOUT DROPPED MY PHONE IN MY TOILET WRITING THIS, THAT WAS AN INSTANT HEART ATTACK MSJJEJEJEKJEK
