Picking Up The Pieces

Moses sighed as he watched Legend walk out. He never wanted to see that. He never meant for this to happen and he wasn't even sure how it happened. "Fuck!" He covered his face.

Dom and Dave met Moses at the convention center. "Where is Legend?" Dave was looking for him. Moses and Legend were connected at the hip for a couple of months now.

"Uh, I think we broke up?" Moses sighed. "Let's just get this over with!" He couldn't think about Legend. "I have to deal with Legend after..."

He was in deep thought after that. He didn't want to lose Legend. How could he have been such a fool? What was Legend really asking? He just wanted to be in a relationship, in public like a normal couple.

Moses pictured them just walking down the street to get pastries, holding hands and talking. Smiling at each other and being silly. Being free.

Moses almost sighed at the thought of freedom. He felt like he was in a prison, it was a self made prison but one he couldn't escape and now he was making Legend stay in the prison with him?

Legend deserved better. He said he loved Legend, but he couldn't do one thing to make Legend happy? He couldn't be honest and share his love for Legend with the world and their fans? What was wrong with him? He was so scared ...of what?
"What did you do now?" Dave crossed his arms over his chest.

"I fucked up. I told him I wasn't ever coming out. We ended up fighting. I told him to leave and...he did." Moses inhaled. "I don't know what happened but I didn't want him to actually leave! He was assigned to be part of the press. So..."

Dom smiled. "Well, that's perfect. Make it up to him! Tell him how you feel, in public. What's more public than a thousand members of the press?" There were like fifty but it felt like more.

Moses glared. "No."

"Your stubbornness will keep you single and alone. Legend deserves better than you!" Dave glared. He stormed onto the stage and sat in a chair. He was mad. He liked Legend and Moses was fucking up. Dom followed Dave. Dom agreed with Dave silently.

Moses was last. He sat reluctantly and looked out in the crowd. He found Legend. He looked as sexy as ever. Paper in hand and there was a cameraman by him. They were talking quietly. Moses felt a twinge of jealousy.

What was that? He was never jealous. Moses knew that if he lost Legend today that it would be permanent. Legend could go on to find someone else. Legend would be out and proud and find a man to love him. It wasn't hard to fall for that beautiful man.

The press quieted down. It was time to begin this mess. Get it over with. How did this become a mess? Derek and his shit and Legend walking out...

Moses smiled. "Good morning." The smile was fake and felt fake. "Please, ask your questions in an orderly fashion." The press knew the drill. Moses usually loved attention but this time...he wanted to just talk to Legend and fix this.

A man in the front raised his hand and Moses was bracing for it. The questions he dreaded. This wasn't it. "How is Derek?"

Moses smiled. "He's getting better. Stronger every day. Thanks for asking and I will let him know you were concerned."

A woman in the back raised her hand. "Are the rumors about Derek true?" Moses cringed. "He attempted suicide?"

Moses looked at their PR man, xxx. He nodded. "Yes. He is getting the help that he needs." He looked at Dave and Dom.

Dom took this. "He is where he needs to be and we're all here for him." He smiled. Moses always shared these meetings with the band. "Thanks." He didn't want to be the only one talking.

Another woman in a red shirt. "So, you have seen him?"

Dave nodded. "Yes. We have visited him when we are allowed. He sends his regards." He smiled a charming smile.

Moses saw Legend shake his head. He was passing his turn. Fuck. He fucked up.

A man beside him smiled. "I guess I'm next then. Uh, there are rumors flying and I just wanted to clear that up. Is the rumor that Derek tried to hurt himself because he was in love with Moses?" The man was blunt and it was painful.

Moses stared. He was at a loss for words. He knew but he just couldn't form words and hearing that question out loud from a stranger was hurtful. He never meant to hurt Derek, never.

He didn't realize what he was doing to people or himself until he met Legend. How could one man mess him up that bad and give him clarity?

Dave frowned. "No. Derek had personal things he was dealing with. You will have to ask him those questions when he's better." He glared at the man. "Or never."

Moses saw Legend shake his head again. Moses was stopping this. "You..in the white shirt." He looked at Legend. "Mr. All Music. Question?"

Legend stared with his mouth opened. "No! No, not really. Who's next?" His boss had sent him his questions. The first one was about Moses being gay. He wasn't asking.

"Come on, out with it." Moses glared at Legend.

"Fine. You asked for it." Legend inhaled. Fuck! "Uh, there are rumors that you, Mr. Hardy....are...gay." He inhaled. He didn't want to ask.

Moses stared at Legend. The press erupted into questions about being gay and dating. Things with Derek were adding up now.

The press would know and the world would know. What was he supposed to say? He glared daggers at Mr. All Music and hated himself for pushing Legend. He should have known that was the question. He was waiting for it but wasn't expecting it from his man.

"Next question." Moses sighed. "I would rather just answer questions about the band and our music. Please. We have a record coming out soon. Maybe questions about that."

More questions about being gay. One man in front smiled and raised his hand as the press quieted down. "It's not a shameful thing, Sir. I'm gay and my husband is in the back. He's a cameraman. We are very happy. No one is here to judge. We're just here for the fans." He smiled.

Moses inhaled.

A woman in the middle close to Legend smiled. "I'm a lesbian!" She stood proud.

Three more hands went up saying they were gay. "No shame in it, Mr. Hardy." A man smiled, in the back.

Moses blushed but recovered. "I appreciate that. I do. But I am not..." His eyes met Legend's face and he saw unshed tears. If he finished this sentence, he would lose the best thing that ever happened to him. "I..." Fuck.

Dave leaned over. "Just say it and get your guy back." He whispered. "We are behind you and you know that."

Moses inhaled. "Fine." He looked at Legend. If he was going down, he was taking Legend with him. He stood up and people fell silent. They thought he was leaving.

"I know this is very unconventional but...You want to know everything?" They were getting it.

This was so stupid. He walked down the steps through the crowd and walked through everyone to the white shirt and the face he memorized.

"This is so stupid!" He was in front of Legend. "But I can't risk losing you." He kissed Legend as camered filmed and flashes of light blinded them. He opened his eyes expecting to see a very angry Legend but he saw Legend smile.

"You mad?" Moses had to ask.

"I'm proud of you!" Legend smiled. He forgot where they were and molded together again and Legend dropped his paper. Questions were flying but neither man heard them until they pulled apart again.

Moses laughed. "This is my boyfriend, Legend Osborn. He's a writer for All Music. He's very talented."

Legend turned red. He was never in front of a camera. Questions were flying again and every camera was aimed at the couple, even Legend's camera.

"Now." Moses pulled Legend up the steps and to a chair beside him. "Ask away."

The press blew up. "In an order, please!" Moses reminded them as he laughed.

"Yes?" He felt so much better. Lighter than he ever felt. Holy hell! How long was he pretending?

This was a very heavy weight that was finally removed from his chest and shoulders that he didn't realize he was carrying. He took a deep breath and felt like dancing, he was so happy. Really happy and light.

A man raised his hand. "That was so romantic. You said boyfriend?"

Moses inhaled. "Yes. Legend and I have been dating for over two months. I had no plans to come out, ever. I have always been gay....so."

A woman asked Legend. "No. I...am not gay!" He chuckled. "I'm just in love with Moses. Thanks."

Moses laughed. "He's in the closet!"

Legend laughed and held Moses's hand. He was nervous.

The press calmed down and began asking questions about the record and who was taking over for Derek. Moses was happy to announce that after Dave talked about the music. Finally, questions about the music.

"Well, we have decided to postpone tours for Derek. He is part of our family and we won't abandon him. So, we won't schedule more concerts until he's with us. Thanks." Moses smiled. Dom and Dave nodded.

"However... We are doing some recording and are using a new keyboard player for that, with Derek's okay. We have all talked about that...well, except for my new keyboard player. He has no idea." Moses smiled and looked at Legend. "Will you be our keyboard player for a few songs on our album?"

Legend stared at Moses. "Uh..."

"You are so cute!" Moses smiled. "Seriously, Derek okayed it."

Legend just nodded.

Moses smiled at the press. "You should hear him play! It's very sexy... I mean he is very talented. He's a wonderful writer and writes some good music. I think he may collaborate on the next album but I'm jumping ahead." This was all news to Legend and he just laughed.

"Do your parents know that you're gay?" A woman asked.

Moses smiled. "Yes. My mom is already planning our wedding and no! We're not even close to that so don't spread that news! We will let you know if and when we get married. My mom is just...she loves Legend. And yes, my father also loves him. We have family dinner every night."

Someone asked what Legend thought of his new inlaws. Legend smiled. "It's weird being up here!" He looked around and smiled at Dom and Dave.

"I love my new parents. If I call them inlaws his mom will hurt me!" He winked. "I love you, Miriam, because I know you're watching!" She will watch this.

Moses leaned into Legend to have a private moment. "I almost screwed up."

Legend nodded. "I know."

"Forgive me?"

"For outing me?" Legend glared.

Moses laughed. "Sure!"

"Forgiven. Make up sex will be...it will kill me!" Legend smiled.

Moses nodded. They turned to the press and answered a few more questions.
