Daisies
Derek sat in his bed staring at his bag that was already packed. He was being released tomorrow. He took a breath as someone knocked on his door. "Come in."
It was the last person he expected. "Legend?" Derek was really confused.
Legend smiled. He pulled some flowers from behind his back. "Hey. I heard you were busting out tomorrow and I wanted to talk with you. Moses doesn't know..."
Derek watched Legend. "Okay?"
"I brought flowers because...I wanted to kind of congratulate you for getting out of here. I know you have been doing a lot of hard work." He saw a look from Derek.
"I had a friend in rehab once. I don't fully understand, but I know leaving is tough. So, flowers. Celebration flowers." He handed them to Derek and grabbed a seat.
Derek smelled the flowers. "Uh, thanks." They were pretty and very simple white daisies. "I...why are you here again?" He didn't understand.
Legend sighed. "Because. I know going back home where you would be alone would be tough...I wanted to invite you to stay with Moses. Uh...us. If...that would be acceptable? I don't know. I know that..." Legend stopped and took a second. "I used to be good at putting sentences together!"
He wiped his face and dropped his hands and looked at Derek, who looked confused.
"Okay. I wanted to let you know that if you wanted to stay at the house with us, I was okay with it. I heard the guys talking about it this morning. They're all worried about you. Maybe...use the house as a safety? Like a base?"
Derek stared. "A base?"
"You know...like when kids play tag and there is a safe base to hide so that they don't get tagged? Like that." Legend sighed.
"I know things could be weird between us and you could hate me. I know that. I don't want that because even if you and Moses are not together, you are important to him. I know you guys are/were friends, I don't want to get between you."
Legend took a breath to slow himself down. "I wanted to be honest with you. I do worry that you will hate me for loving Moses. I don't want any of us to be on eggshells at the house. That's no way to live. I grew up that way and I can't do it again. Am I making any sense? I'm nervous!"
Derek watched Legend fidget for a minute. He looked nervous. "Legend, I have to be honest with you if this is going to work out. I need my friends. I need Moses, Dom and Dave. I was thinking about being like the old me, always lying about it or pretending but I do need them."
Legend nodded.
"But I'm realizing why he fell for you. I want to see Moses happy and I'm jealous that it wasn't me that put that smile on his face. Everytime I see him, he looks...lighter. He actually looks happy. You make him happy and that kind of pisses me off!" Derek sighed. "But..." He watched Legend. "I know he wasn't happy before you."
Legend nodded again. He was thinking about what to do next. "Do you hate me?"
Derek sighed. "I don't know? Sorry. It's my honest answer. Maybe a little of both. I'm trying to hate you." He chuckled. "I would never do what you're doing. I'm a jealous person. I wouldn't allow my man to see his ex let alone invite him to live with them! I don't understand you?"
Legend smiled. "I get that. Dave doesn't either. I doubt that Moses does. It's pretty simple, Derek. I love Moses with my whole being. I know that everything that happened between you guys hurt him. I know he still blames himself for the suicide attempt. He didn't know you had a drinking problem or that you were taking antidepressants. There was a lot that he didn't know. He feels alienated from you, like you guys are strangers."
Legend paused. "He's working through things too and started seeing a therapist. That's helping. We started going together because he didn't want to do it alone."
"I know you're friends. He still wants that, Derek. He wants to get to a place where he can love you like a friend. It will take time. I want to support him and you. You're part of his life too and for Moses to be happy, we need to get along or at least be honest." Legend paused, waiting to see what Derek would say next.
Derek sighed. "Damn you!"
Legend looked surprised. "What?"
"You are impossible to hate!" Derek sighed.
"I keep telling him that too." Moses was at the door. He walked in. "Hello?" He looked at Legend.
Derek sighed. "He came here to be nice to me. I mean seriously! I'm trying to hate him but he's impossible!" He glared at Moses.
Moses nodded. "I know. I didn't know he came here?" He turned to look at Legend. "What are you doing here, Legend?"
Legend sighed. "I'm supporting our friend." He shrugged.
"I so want to hate you or marry you!" Derek smiled.
Moses chuckled. "I know! He's irresistible. I couldn't help but fall in love with him!"
Legend sighed. "Moses, I invited Derek to stay with us until he felt more comfortable out in the world. Leaving rehab is tough to do alone."
Moses sighed. "Keep talking and we are just going to the courthouse!" He was ready to marry Legend this afternoon.
Legend smiled. He turned to Derek. "Take the night and think about it. I'm leaving. Moses, I will see you later. Derek, please don't hate me too much." He shook Derek's hand and walked out.
Derek stared as Legend closed the door. "Did your boyfriend just leave you alone with your ex?"
Moses laughed. "I know. I don't get him either. Derek, I wanted to come and invite you to live with us too but I didn't talk with Legend about it yet! Is that why he was here?"
"Yes and he brought me flowers!" Derek smelled the Daisies. "I like him, Moses. I hate that I do but I like him...So...do you mean that?"
"What?"
"That I can live with you guys?" Derek was sure that this was a dream.
"Until you get your shit figured out, stay with us. Go to meetings with your dad and we're here to support you... Even my boyfriend!" Moses chuckled. "I don't deserve him, Derek!"
"He's perfect, right. Is he good in bed?" Derek smiled.
Moses laughed. "Fuck! Derek! He does things that...He doesn't even know what he does to me. I find him so irresistible. Sex with him is..." He paused. "Sorry!"
"No! I want to hear it. Moses, I know I fucked you over and I wasn't the first one. Legend was straight and I don't understand that. How did you get a straight guy to have sex with you?" Derek stared. He didn't understand their relationship one bit.
Moses smiled. "I'm charming!" Derek glared with a smirk. "Really, it was him. He told me that he wanted to have sex with me. He wanted to love me. I made love to him and I let him love me. I never did those things! I wanted to show him love. Derek, I fell in love with him as soon as our eyes met."
Derek stared. "Love at first sight isn't a thing!"
"I know. I made him go to the carnival with me. Mom made us kiss. Well, she thought we were dating. I barely knew his name and I kissed him. It was a small peck on the lips and I felt alive for the first time."
"I forgot my parents were there when we kissed the second time. I slammed him into the wall. He kissed me back and moaned. His body, it's glorious, melted into mine. I never had anyone respond to a kiss like that." Moses sighed. "Sorry!"
Derek smiled. "No. Moses, I have known you since we were little, we lost our virginity a week apart. We were gay together and in the closet. You helped me come out even though you weren't ready."
"Moses, we know each other. We also know that us together was a terrible idea. I thought I loved you but...I loved the idea of us together but not us in real life. I just loved the idea of us being together because we had known each other for so long. I thought we could have a happy ending. I figured that I could love you enough to make you feel love for me. Does that make sense?"
Moses smiled. "I get it. You thought you could make me change?"
"Yes! I thought since we knew each other so well...that we would be perfect together and I was lonely. I was foolish. I was trying to force a relationship and make you feel love for me where there was none." Derek sighed. "I came to that realization at therapy last week."
Moses looked around. The room was empty. He was ready to leave. "I know. We butted heads. Can we move on?"
Derek sighed. "I hope." He turned to Dom. "So, you were in LA to witness Legend with Moses... So what happened in LA?"
Dom chuckled. "Man! I swear it was instant with those two. Dave and I were following Moses instructions to avoid the reporter, so we were. I knew he was about to leave when you two had that incident. They met as you slammed the door." He smiled. "We watched from the top of the stairs."
"Legend talked to us later about the details. So, Legend wanted to just get an interview so he bargained with Moses. Moses needed a date for the carnival. The deal was supposed to end there but... Miriam saw something between them and insisted on having dinner that night and the next night." Dom sighed. "Moses was pissed even more than normal."
"He was always kind of pissed off!" Derek chuckled. "So, Legend broke the frozen exterior that Moses had built up? How?"
Dom shrugged. "Damn if I know! Legend was straight and Moses was determined not to date anyone!"
Derek chuckled. "Legend is one of a kind."
