Crumbling Away
The band was ready to hold a press conference. They had some announcements and some band news. The press and fans wanted to know about Derek also. They didn't want to hide and their PR man, Cody Stephens had already arranged it with their agent, Andrea. Moses had to talk to Legend.
Legend was in the living room on the phone. "Amy, this is a bad idea."
"What?" Amy sounded stunned. "It's perfect and you are already there! No extra expenses! Go to the conference. I want that for the article. Got me." She wasn't asking. She hung up.
"Well, shit!" Legend sighed.
Moses was in the doorway. "What happened?"
"I'm going to be at the press conference as part of the press!" Legend sighed. "It's not my thing, really but I'm here and all."
"Well, we're just talking about Derek and our new release." Moses had no plans to say anything else. "I'm not coming out." He paused.
"Look, a lot of past bands didn't talk about their personal lives. Queen was one. Freddie Mercury never mentioned his personal life. He always steered the questions back to the band and the music."
"I can do that. I never have to come out!" Moses was thinking about this for a while and he was freaking out.
Legend sighed. He nodded. It felt wrong, somehow. They could never be free to walk in public, hold hands and kiss. Date. Get married. He would grow old with Moses but no one would ever know. He wouldn't be free like regular people.
"You know that this is a different time? You don't have to hide these days, Moses. We could actually go out! Date...walk hand in hand." He knew he should shut up. This was how guys were kicked out. "It feels wrong to hide it." Legend never thought he would be saying this. "It's even legal to get married now!"
Moses looked upset. Defiant. "I am not coming out. I told you that, Legend. If you have a problem with that, leave." He didn't mean anything he just said.
He fell into his old habit with the old guys and this was Legend. He never wanted Legend to leave. He was being stupid and couldn't stop it. He knew Legend. Most guys would pout and argue, Legend would leave.
Legend glared. "Really? Are we back to that? You want me to leave because I want to love you in public? Fuck you!" Legend stormed out.
He had no idea he even wanted to come out but he knew staying in the closet was wrong. It felt bad. He called a cab in the driveway and waited fifteen minutes. He was going to be at the convention center early. He had to just get this over with and pick up the pieces.
