A Visit with Derek

Moses was so nervous about this. He had no idea how this might turn out. He had to talk to the therapist first. Dr. David Stance. He was a patient man that Moses had talked to a couple of times.

They all sat in his office first. Dr. Stance smiled. "Gentlemen, good to see you again. What can I help you with?"

Dom shuffled in his seat. "Well, we wanted to talk to Derek today about the band, the future and..."

Dave picked up the sentence. "Moses being in a relationship and how that would affect him."

Moses was silent.

Dr. Stance nodded. "Well, we know that Derek has had a lot of time to think about things, his past and future relationships with boyfriends, lovers and his family. What's the problem?" They were vague and Moses was silent. "Moses?"

Moses cleared his throat. "Uh...I'm seeing someone. I didn't know how that would affect Derek? I don't want to hurt him."

Dr. Stance watched the three men. It wasn't a band member from the body language.

Dom spoke up. "We want to come clean about everything. We all love Derek. He's been with us since we started and we want him to stay in the band. He's family but we don't want him hurt since Moses' new guy is sticking around."

Dave nodded.

"So, this relationship is serious?" Dr. Stance was shocked. Surprised. He had talked with Moses and he never did anything serious.

Moses cleared his throat. "I'm in love. I just worry about how it will be for Derek?"

"He's doing much better. His father has shown up for a few sessions with him. It's helped them both. He has stopped drinking...they are going to the AA meetings here, together. I have a lot of hope for them."

"His father is slowly accepting that Derek is gay. Derek will need you guys also. You guys are important to him. How long were you together?" Dr. Stance watched Moses.

"Uh, almost two weeks..." Moses sighed. "But I've known Derek most of my life."

"And this new guy?"

"Two months." Moses watched Dr. Stance smile. "So...Should we tell Derek?" Moses had no idea. "I just don't want to hurt him. I didn't even know he was drinking that much!" The detox was terrible on Derek.

"Honesty is good for Derek and building a new relationship. I can sit in with you, if you like. Moses, he's doing better." Dr. Stance stood. "Let's get on with this!"

Dom and Dave followed and Moses was last. He got a text from Legend and he felt better.

Good luck, I love you and dinner will be on the table. ;)

Moses inhaled as he walked to Derek's room. He looked healthy. He was dressed and sitting at a desk. His face was scrunched up in concentration. He was a very handsome man but Moses wasn't attracted. What was he thinking before?

Derek smiled as they walked in. He was thrilled that they still came. His wrist wasn't wrapped any longer but there were scars. Reminders about how close he came. Reminders that he needed. "Guys!" He stood and hugged them all, Moses last. He had to apologize to him.

"Hey. How are things?" Moses smiled as Derek sat.

"Well, I have to write a list of things I want for my future. Things to focus on and I'm stuck." Derek sighed. He didn't know what his future held.

"On what part?" Dom asked.

"Uh...employment...." Derek cleared his throat. "I just...I always..."
Moses stopped him. "Do you want to be in the band?"

Derek looked up, shocked.

"We have to talk about everything, if you're up for it. I mean it. Just...we have to go over the future and we have to be honest, Derek. I don't want lies to seperate us anymore. We are family and we have to respect each other. No more hiding and hurting alone. Okay?" Moses said it all really fast and inhaled.

"Easy, Moses!" Dr. Stance almost chuckled. He saw that Moses was nervous. "Derek, they came and asked me if you could handle this and I assured them that you were ready."

"I am!" Derek smiled a small nervous smile. He was sure they were going to leave him. He caused so much trouble. He took a deep breath. "I wasn't sure that you would talk to me!" He looked at Moses then down at his hands.

Moses sighed. "We have to talk. I have tons to tell you and we have decisions to make. I'm starting off. I want to tell you one thing and let you make up your mind first. Okay?"

Derek nodded.

"I want you to think about it. Really. This may not be easy." Moses inhaled. "I met someone."

Derek laughed. "Surprise, surprise." He shrugged. Moses never kept them.

"This guy is special, Derek. It's been two months, officially. I'm his boyfriend." Moses let that settle in the room.

Derek watched the guys and looked back at Moses. "And?"

"I love him. We're in love." Moses sighed. He had a fear that this would cause Derek to slip up. Swallow pills or something. Their feelings were fragile.

Derek nodded but he was silent. He was thinking and held up a finger. He was requesting silence. He took a bunch of breaths. "You are in love with someone?"

"I am."

"He feels the same?" Derek watched Moses like he was looking for something. He saw it. A flick in Moses's eye. He saw love as Moses smiled.

"Yes." Moses smiled and tried to stop it. "We are in love. I never meant for it...it was an accident." He tried to be calm and bland. He didn't want to shout from the rooftops and explode into glitter and rainbows.

Be calm. No parades and excitement over this guy. He wanted to though.

"Of course. Moses...how long have we known each other?" Derek smiled a small smile.

"Since we were little, like six." Moses watched Dom and Dave nod. "Right?"

Derek laughed. "Yes. I never saw you in love. I had to think about it. I never loved you! I mean, I love you, as a friend, a brother...though that may be weird now, but...we are awful together!"

Moses inhaled. "I know. We just argued."

"I was controlling." Derek smiled. "You hate that. Is he controlling?"

Dom answered quicker. "No! He's very easy going." Dave elbowed him. "Sorry!"

Moses smiled. "He is. We're not out yet though. He hasn't pushed it."

Derek nodded. "I see. So...why tell me?"

"Because I didn't want you coming home and bam, some guy is at my house. I didn't want things to be awkward and..." Moses trailed off and left the sentence open.

"You were afraid I was going to hurt myself again." Derek nodded. "I know. I think about that too. I don't want to and I still have work to do. So, when do I meet him?"

"Uh.." Moses looked at Dr. Stance.

"He's good. Just tell him everything." Dr. Stance smiled.

Moses inhaled. "Just...brace yourself. Okay?"

"Uh, is it my dad?" Derek glared in confusion.

Moses laughed. "No! It's the reporter." There it was said out loud and Derek knew.

"The reporter, the writer guy that was at the house for a magazine article?" Derek met him and liked him. He was hot!

"Yes." Moses looked at the floor.

"He's not your type!" Derek was shocked.

"You have no idea how right you are!" Moses chuckled. "He wasn't gay either!"

Derek stared.

"He's cool." Dave smiled.

"He is. He's worried about how you're doing. He's strangely a very nice guy." Moses sighed.

"And he likes you?" Derek teased and got a chuckle out of Moses. "Moses. I have never seen you happy with someone. Does he make you happy?"

Moses nodded. "He does. This with him, it's long term and I know he will be around and I wanted to warn you. It's not...I...With him...things are different."

Derek smiled. "I can see that. Part of me...if we are being honest...I'm jealous and sad that I couldn't be that for you. Part of me is happy for you and part of me hates him."

Moses nodded. He looked at the floor.

Derek smiled. "But it won't destroy me." He looked proud.

Moses nodded and looked up. "Good. I never want that. I value our friendship and I hope we can build it up again. I'm sorry that I ruined it. We should have never..."

"I know. I knew better while we were having sex. I knew better. It was stupid. I would love to rebuild our friendship, Moses. I would love to be in the band. I miss you guys! I'm sorry I fucked it up." Derek sighed. "And I'm glad you came to talk to me. So, is he living with you?"

"For now. I was planning on staying with him but things changed and he came here. He lives in New York, so we have a lot to talk about and figure out. It's still new so we have things to work on. He has been very patient with me. We are taking things very slow and just getting to know each other." Moses smiled.

Derek nodded. "Is he always this insufferable about the guy?"

Dom and Dave both said yes at the same time. Moses blushed. Derek laughed. "I see."

"Derek, it's bad. Junior high hormones, bad!" Dom smiled.

"Shut up." Moses covered his face. "You may not want to hear it."

"Moses. Can you guys bring him next week, after the press conference? And yes, I know about it." Derek smiled.

"How? Oh, Andrea called you too?" Moses was surprised. Andrea Hermes was their agent.

"She called to see if I was attending." Derek smiled.

They stayed for way longer than they planned because they were talking about band business and this meeting went much better than expected. Moses half expected Derek to be pissed and slit his throat. But no. He seemed happier. Healthier.
