Worse Than Expected

A/N: Hey! So I realized that I put Avi's comments in italics! So, whenever someone is thinking to themselves, I will use italics AND asterisks. I hope this is helpful.:).

Today is the day of Scott's surgery. Much to say, Mitch prayed endless. He hasn't slept since the day Scott got the news of the surgery. He just can't believe that his older brother might be dying.

Scott is a lot like Avi. He always protected Mitch. He protected him from harm. Even though they went through that time when Scott pulled that trick on him with Kirstin, Tyler, and Ariana, they didn't let that get between them. They became closer.

They rarely fought and even if they did, they end the fight with laughter and tears running down their faces. They comforted each other if they were sad and calmed them down when they were angry. The fact that Scott could be dying today struck fear in Mitch. He began to cry, a thought in his mind that refused to leave.

*I just lost Papa, Travis left, Dad is going someplace else, and now Scott is dying. I can't lose anyone else.*

~~~
Kirstin walked into the hospital, not looking back at Ariana. The both of them rarely spoke ever since Lilliana called Kirstin out. The Grande family is falling apart, but they don't want that to happen.
"Snowfla-I mean, Ariana?" Kirstin asked, turning around. Ariana nodded, her lips tight. "Are you staying for the surgery?"
"No," Ariana answered in an angry voice. Kirstin nodded, wanting everything to back like it was. "I need to pick up Lilliana."
"Okay," Kirstin commented, finding Matt and Sara right away. The both of them stood up and hugged her, happy to see her. Kirstin turned around to say goodbye do Ariana, but her wife was already gone. She sighed and got out of the hug. "Where's your dads?"
"Dad is in the gift shop and Papa is in the bathroom," Sara answered, tears welling up in her eyes. She wiped them quickly, breathing heavily. "I just want that tumor to be gone. Uncle Mitchy is here too if you want to say hi."
Mitch stood up, smiling at his older sister. The siblings hugged each other, refusing to let go because they are both afraid of losing someone that they love again. They let go of each other hesitantly and sat down next to each other. Matt bit his lip and sat down next to Mitch.
"Do you think Papa will be okay?" He asked, his grey eyes full of emotion. Mitch sighed and put an arm around his nephew's shoulders. "He has to be. He doesn't deserve."
"No he do-do-es-n't," Mitch agreed, rubbing Matt's arm. Alex then came in, a small teddy bear in his hand. "W-wh-hen wi-wi-ill be go-go-ing in?"
"About five minutes," Alex answered, smiling when Scott got out of the bathroom. The tall blond sat down and smiled when his husband kisses on his cheek. "You're so strong, babe. You'll make it."
Scott smiled and put his head on Alex's shoulder. The family stayed quiet, waiting patiently for the surgeon. Dr. Riley then came up to them, a somber look on her face.
"Are you ready, Scott?"
Scott looked at his family, tears gathering in his eyes. Sara began to cry, her long red hair covering her face. Matt hugged her close, his grey releasing the tears he tried so hard to not show. Mitch and Kirstin shared a look, not wanting to show their emotions. Alex began to cry heavily, not wanting to lose Scott. Scott sighed and nodded.
"I'm ready."
~~~

What was actually eight hours seemed like an eternity. About four hours ago, Alex was told that Scott did not lose his arm or his voice. The family thanked God endlessly, happy that Scott is safe. Well, not a hundred percent safe.

"It's been eight hours," Kirstin murmured, looking down at her watch. Mitch nodded and smiled at Sara and Matt's sleeping figures. They reminded him of him and Kirstin when they were younger. Alex went to the gift shop once more, getting something for Scott. "Ariana and I might get a divorce."

"Is it be-be-ca-use of Tris?" Mitch asked softly, frowning when Kirstin nodded. He knows what she is going through and it's not fair. "I'm so so-so-ry, Kirst."

"I shouldn't have kissed her," Kirstin replied, shaking her head. She noticed Alex talking on the phone as tears rushed down his face. When the phone call ended, Alex fell on the chair, crying even more. "What happened?"

"Scott...he...he," Alex began, his tears interrupting him. He sobbed loudly, causing Mitch to stand up.

"Is he o-ok-kay?" Mitch's asked softly, tearing up himself. Alex's silence answered the question. "No, it c-ca-an't be! No!"

Scott is dead.

And Mitch didn't get to say goodbye.

Kirstin began to cry herself, not wanting to accept the fact that her older brother is gone. She expected Alex to start sobbing loudly, but he began to laugh. Kirstin and Mitch shared a look, confused.

"Wh-wh-why are you la-la-ugh-hing?" Mitch asked, his confusion getting the best of him. "Scott is-"

"Alive," Alex admitted, his smile lighting up the room. "He's okay the tumor is gone, the cancer is gone, and he's okay."

And after months of feeling depressed and lonely, Mitch finally felt happy.

~~~
Scott smiled as he saw his family come in. Sara and Matt ran in, hugging their father tightly. Alex, Kirstin, and Mitch shared a look of gratefulness. They came in and the Kirk children got out of the way to let their other father hug him. The two husbands hugged each other tightly, crying on each other's shoulders. Alex then put his hands gently on Scott's shoulders, his smile growing.
"I love you so much, Scott."
Scott smiled and kissed Alex sweetly. He then spoke himself and Alex widened his eyes.
"I love you too, Alex."
Alex's eyes didn't widened because of the fact that Scott told him he loved him. He widened his eyes at Scott's voice. He was expecting the melodic voice that was quite loud. That isn't what he got though.
What he got was the quietest voice he has ever heard.
~~~

A week passed and Scott was released from the hospital. Dr. Riley told Alex that the tumor permanently ruined his left vocal cord. Scott will have to have 50% of his voice until next year, when he will be 'stable' to have the surgery.

Alex watched as Scott went into the car, sighing sadly. Sara and Matt went home with Kirstin and Mitch because the hospital was scaring the oldest Kirk child. Scott smiled at his husband and patted the seat.

"Come on, babe," Scott commanded loving, his new voice barely above a whisper. "I want to go home."

Alex nodded and stared at Scott's chest. The scar he received started at his neck and ended a couple inches under his chest. Alex then got into the car, listening to Scott hum quietly.

*Please let him be okay. He's been through enough. Make him better.*

The couple did not talk for the whole ride.

~~~
Mitch walked around the Kirk household, admiring everything the big house had to offer. It is no bigger than a mansion. The house made him feel safe and protected.
You are safe and protected, Mitchy. I'm still here.
"I k-kn-now," Mitch responded loudly, shaking his head. He turned around to see Sara with a worried look on her face. "I was ta-ta-alk-king to my-my-se-se-elf."
Sara nodded, backing off slowly. Mitch shook his head as he heard the door closing. He sighed heavily as he crossed his arms.
Don't do that me to me. I could still ground you, even though you never been grounded. Things could change though.
Mitch was about to say something when the house phone rang. He raised an eyebrow and walked towards it, seeing that it is the hospital. He picked it up immediately, feeling Avi behind him.
"He-he-llo?"
"Is this Scott Kirk?"
"No, this is his b-bro-th-th-er. What's the m-ma-att-ter?"
"Could I trust you to tell him this message?"
Mitch bit his lip, praying that the news will be okay. He then sighed, murmuring yes.
"I'm so sorry. Scott's cancer is highly aggressive. He will have to start treatment. I'm so sorry."
Mitch then began to shake, saying a quick 'it's okay'. He hung up, sliding down. He cried into his hands, worrying about Scott and his health.
He'll be okay.
"W-wh-hat if he isn't th-th-ough?" Mitch asked, breathing heavily. He began to shake his head. "I c-ca-an't lose him! I al-re-re-ady lost you!"
You won't lose him. He's going to be okay. I'll make sure he'll stay safe. I will do it to make you happy. Everything will be okay, Mitch. I promise.
And that is a promise Avi will not let break, whether he is alive or in Heaven.
A/N: I didn't add some parts of my journey in here because most of it's either a) too personal and b) I can't explain it that well. I was thirteen when it happened so I can't remember a lot, lol. Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed the chapter and I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!:D
