Goodbye

(WARNING: death)

Mitch ran into the hospital, looking around for Kevin. Kirstin, McKenna, and Travis ran in behind him, stopping when they saw Mitch looking around for his dad.

"Mitch," Travis called, walking up to his husband. Mitch turned around, his heart beating fast. "Babe, he wouldn't leave without saying goodbye."

Mitch let out a sob, burying his face into the jacket that his husband is wearing. Travis bit his lip to keep himself from crying as he held Mitch right. McKenna couldn't understand why her dads looked so sad so she pulled at Kirstin's shirt.

"Yeah, McKenna?" Kirstin asked, wiping her eyes. McKenna sighed as thought about her question.

"Why is Daddy crying and why does Papa look so sad?" McKenna asked quietly, not knowing how much the question hurt Kirstin's heart. "Are they okay?"

"They'll explain why," Kirstin answered, shaking with emotion. Ariana came in with with their twelve year old Lilliana. Ariana hugged her wife, hugging her tightly. "Snowflake..."

"Shhhh, it's going to be okay, Sunshine," Ariana reassured, her heart breaking when her wife began to sob quietly. "I told Lilliana."

"Mommy? Mama?" Lilliana asked,  her voice shaking. Her moms welcomed in in their hug and let more tears release when their daughter began to cry. "What's happening to GrandPoppy?"

Kirstin looked at Mitch, who is still in Travis' embrace. He nodded and put his head back into his husband's chest, crying harder. McKenna frowned and hugged her dad's legs.

"Lilli," Ariana began, catching her daughter's attention. Lilliana nodded, tears running down her cheeks. "GrandPoppy is going to Heaven."

"No," Lilliana yelled out, shaking her head. She let out more sobs, breaking her mothers' hearts. "It's not fair! He doesn't deserve to die!"

Kirstin and Mitch began to cry and went to hug each other, wanting everything to be okay. They just want their dad to be healthy and happy. Scott and Alex came in, Sara and Matt right behind him. The four of them have tears running down their cheeks and Scott went up to his siblings, hugging them close. They let out loud sobs, praying for their dad to be healed.

"Family of Avriel Olusola?" A nurse called out, widening his eyes a bit when pretty much everyone stood up. "Well, you all could go back there. Just be careful. He's very fragile."

Mitch bit his lip as he stood up, not waiting for Travis and McKenna. He caught up with Scott and Kirstin, the three of them crying quietly. They held hands with one another, protecting each other. They have always done this. The day when Mitch began to walk, Scott and Kirstin held his hands to help him and that was just a trait that was kept throughout the years. Now is the time to do that.

"G-gu-uy-ys-s?" Mitch asked quietly, getting nods in response. "P-pr-rom-mise-e we'll al-wa-ay-ys stay to-ge-get-th-her."

"Of course," Kirstin promised, squeezing Mitch's hand gently. They then looked at their older brother, who looks concentrated on something. "Scott?"

"What?" Scott asked, turning to his siblings. He then thought of Mitch's question and nodded his head. "Of course. We're siblings for a reason. We're never going to separate."

And that was a promise they all swore to keep.

~~~
Kevin looked at Avi sadly, tears running down his face gently. Avi is trying his best to not close his eyes because he knows if he does, he won't be able to tell his children that he loves them.
"Avi?" Kevin asked softly while sitting down. Avi turned around, the movement making him tired. "Baby, it's going to be okay. You're going to be okay. You're going to go someplace happier."
"I know," Avi agreed, yawning a bit. Kevin bit his lip to keep the sobs intact, but he had to smile a bit when Avi wiped the tears away. "We've been together since we were eighteen and got married at twenty. Five months later, we adopted Scott. We were so young, Kevin. Thirty nine years, babe."
"I know," Kevin whispered, holding his tighter. Avi smiled weakly and kissed Kevin's hand. "Forever and forever?"
"Forever and forever," Avi repeated, looking towards the door when it opened. On the other side was their children, grand children, and sons and daughter in laws. They all have teary eyes and quiet cries seemed to harmonize with each other. "Let speak to my grandchildren first."
Lilliana, Matt, McKenna, and Sara walked in, looking back at their parents. They all nodded, wanting their children to be with their grandfather once more.
"Sara and Matt?" Avi began, catching their attention. "You two are so much like Scott. He is so outgoing and kind. You have his kindness and outgoing persona. Make sure that he doesn't stop writing, okay?"
"Okay, GrandGrand," Sara murmured, wiping her eyes. Matt nodded, the tears making it hard for him to speak. "We're going to miss you."
"You're my role model," Matt murmured, hugging his grandpa carefully. Avi tried to hug back, but he wanted to stay awake for his children. "I'm going to miss you."
The Kirk children backed up and Lilliana Grande went up, her grey eyes full of tears.
"GrandPoppy?" Lilliana began, crying right away. Sara closed her eyes, her empathy growing for her younger cousin. "Are you going to get hurt?"
"Of course not," Avi reassured, taking Lilliana's hand gently. The only Grande child let more tears escape, wanting nothing more than just for her GrandPoppy to survive. "You have Kirstin's beauty and caring nature. Always tell her she's beautiful, okay? She deserves it."
"I will, GrandPoppy," Lilliana promised, kissing Avi's cheek. She then backed up, gently nudging McKenna to Avi. "It's okay, McKenna."
McKenna nodded as she walked up to Avi's bed. She stood on her tippy toes and smiled when Kevin picked her up and set her on the bed.
"Granddaddy?" McKenna asked, brushing back Avi's hair. Avi nodded as he looked at his granddaughter. "What do I have that Daddy has?"
"Well," Avi began, smiling when he thought about his youngest. "You have Mitch's strength and sweetness. Make sure that he's okay, okay? Tell him to have the surgery. That will make me so happy."
"Okay, Granddaddy," McKenna replied, nodding her head. She then noticed Avi yawning and she kissed his forehead. "Sleep tight!"
Avi bit his lip, not wanting to tell his youngest grandchild that he was dying. He then liked towards the door and smiled.
"Hey, kids?" Avi called, catching their attention. They nodded sadly, not wanting to leave. "I love you all so much. Please get Alex, Ariana, and Travis."
The grandchildren all nodded and Sara and Lilliana both began to cry harder, realizing that this is the last time they would see Avi. Matt opened the door, trying to hold back his tears but not succeeding. McKenna waved goodbye, not knowing that this is the last time she would see Avi. The kids then left and Alex, Ariana, and Travis came in, tears rolling down their cheeks.
"Hey," Kevin spoke up, still emotional from Avi's conversation with the kids. Everyone smiled at him as he began to walk to the door. "I'm going to talk to Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch."
The door then closed once more and it was just Avi and the children in laws. Avi smiled at Alex, telling him to come over. Alex obeyed and sat down.
"I'm so happy my son met you," Avi began, his voice weakening. He is fading fast and Alex doesn't want him to leave. "Treat him right, okay? Make sure that he continues writing. He has a huge fan base that loves him. Make them his motivation."
"Will do," Alex confirmed, tearing up some more. He then stood up, his legs wobbly. "I love him so much."
"That's amazing," Avi responded, looking at Alex as he backed off to the the door, crying softly. He then looked at Ariana and smiled. "You're next, Mrs. Grande."
"Okay," she commented as she walked to the chair. She breathes heavily as she took Avi's hand. "I'm going to miss you so much, Avi."
"I'm going to miss you too," Avi replied but not frowning. He has a smile on his face, as if he was happy that he is leaving. "You are my little girl's world.
Make sure you tell her everyday that she is beautiful because she needs to hear that. Treat her right, okay?"
"I will, Avi," Ariana promised as age stood up. A tear rolled down her cheek as she breathed heavily. "I will."
"Good," Avi whispered as Ariana went to hug Alex. The both of them began to cry, holding each other tightly. "Travis?"
"Yes, sir?" Travis asked, sitting dyed quickly. Avi then took his hand, causing him to raise an eyebrow. "Way will you like to tell me?"
"You have my baby," Avi began, his voice now a whisper. Travis gripped his hand, his emotions taking over him. "Protect him, okay? Tell him that I will be okay. Tell him to get the surgery. It will make me so happy."
"Okay," Travis promised, hearing the heart monitor slow down. He then let go of Avi's hand, standing up quickly. "I'm going to get them."
"Hurry," Avi commanded quietly as the three of them walked out. In no time, his family came in, all of them sobbing messes. "Scott?"
"Yes, Dad?" Scott asked, walking up to him. He let out a whimper when the once strong hand he used to hold all the time was trying its hardest to grip. "I'm right here."
"Make sure to listen to Alex and the kids when they tell you to write," Avi told him, his voice slowing down faster than the heart monitor. Scott nodded, the tears falling down faster. "I love you so much, Scott. Kirstin?"
"Yes, Papa?" She asked, sobbing quietly. Avi then turned his head towards her and let her grip onto his hand. "Don't tired yourself, Papa."
"It's okay, Kirst," Avi reassured, wiping away the tears. Kirstin cried harder and looked away, not wanting anyone to look at her. "You're so beautiful. Make sure you tell Ari and Lilli that. Mitch?"
"Papa?" Mitch asked, his voice shaking. He sat on the bed, rubbing Avi's legs. "I'm g-go-oing-g do m-mi-is-s you."
"I'm going to miss you too," Avi told his youngest, his voice almost to hard to hear. They could still hear him though and that's all that matters. "Promise you'll have that surgery. Do it to make McKenna, Travis, and me happy. Kevin?"
"Yes, Avi?" Kevin asked, walking up to his husband. Scott and Kirstin let him hold Avi's hand for one last time. "What is it?"
"Forever and forever?" Avi asked, his eyes closing one last time. His breathing slowed down and the heart monitor slowed down even more.
"Forever and forever."
And the heart monitor made a monotonous beep.
A/N: I'm so sorry. This was so hard for me to write. I hope you guys enjoyed this and remember that I love you all. Once again, I am so sorry.
