Epilouge
FIVE MONTHS LATER
Mitch smiled when he heard McKenna running downstairs. She hugged his legs, laughing loudly.
"I missed you, Queen Daddy!"
"I missed you too, McKenna," Mitch replied, brushing back her hair. It was a short bob, but it only made look more adorable. "Where's Papa?"
"He's taking pictures," McKenna answered, hopping on her tippy toes. "Lilliana is coming with Sara and Matt!"
"They are?" Mitch asked, his smile brightening up the room. McKenna nodded excitedly. "Awesome! How about Uncles Scotty and Allie and Aunties Ari and Kirstie?"
"They're coming too," McKenna answered, looking at her imaginary watch. She frowned slightly, tilting her head. "Who don't we leave with each other anymore? All of us used to live in Uncle Scotty and Allie's house. Why aren't we doing that anymore?"
"Uncle Scotty was very sick and I was very sad. We're better now though," Mitch informed her quietly. He sighed himself, wanting to do that again himself. "I do want to do that again though."
Travis came in with his camera and smiled when he saw Mitch. He walked up to him and kissed Mitch lovingly, smiling when the other one kissed back. McKenna giggled and watched her dads be adorable. The doorbell rang and Travis glared at the door.
"I'm going to hurt whoever interrupted our cute moment," Travis murmured, smiling when Mitch laughed. He opened the door and rolled his eyes playfully. "Well, I guess I won't hurt you guys."
"Hello to you too?" Kirstin asked, raising an eyebrow, looking Ariana who just shrugged her shoulders. She smiled as her, Ariana, and Lilliana walked in. "Hey, how are you guys?"
"I'm doing amazingly," McKenna answered, going up to hug her aunts and cousin. She took Lilliana's hand and smiled up at her. "Do you want to Barbies and trucks with me?"
"Of course! Only if I get the Barbie with the prettiest dress and the truck with the biggest wheels."
"Those are my favorites though! Eh, I guess I'll give you an exception."
The parents shared a laugh as they watched their children go off to another room. Ariana looked at Travis and Mitch, a ghost of a smile on her face.
"Lilliana has not missed her period for four months," Ariana informed them. Travis and Mitch shared a sigh of relief, thankful for the good news. "I know that's weird to celebrate, but she missed her period a month after she was..."
"It's okay, Ari. You don't have to finish," Mitch told her sweetly. The brunette nodded as she wiped her tears away, her heart heavy for her daughter. "Those are great news. I'm so happy that she is okay."
"Thank you," Kirstin replied, rubbing Ariana's back. It's taking some time for Lilliana to heal, but she is getting stronger everyday. "They prescribed a higher dosage for her medicine. They didn't want her to have something like that to happen to her again."
Mitch nodded as he looked back at his niece. Lilliana is such a sweet girl and made sure that no one got hurt. When she started to take her medicine again, she blamed herself for everything that happened. It took a long time to reassure her that she couldn't control it. She's better now, but there are still moments were she blames herself. The doorbell rang again and Kirstin opened it, smiling at her older brother and his family.
"The Kirks are here to crash the party," Matt yelled, causing Alex to shake his head. "Hey, Mitchy, Trav, Ari, and Kirstie. I'm using nicknames and I don't know why."
"It's because you're a dork," Sara murmured loudly, getting a high five from Scott. When Matt glared at her playfully, she rose her hands in surrender. "I'm just telling the truth!"
"Yeah, the truth hurts," Scott put in, a dorky smile on his face. Alex rolled his eyes once more, shaking his head.
"I don't know them. I just found them on the street," Alex spoke up, shaking his head. Scott kissed him on the cheek and he smiled warmly. "I love this bum though. He's my hero."
Scott smiled, kissing Alex once more. A month or so ago, he received his vocal cord surgery. It was a success and now his voice was at the same exact volume it was at before he battled cancer. Alex became influenced by his strength and thanked God everyday that he is still alive.
"Sara and Matt, play Barbies and trucks with me and Lilli!"
"We're saving them from Lava Land!"
"Okay," Sara yelled back, laughing with the adults. She walked to the living room, Matt in tow. "I call a truck!"
"I call a Barbie!"
"Breaking gender norms since the day they were born," Mitch joked, smiling when everyone laughed a bit. He looked at Scott and Alex, his smile contagious. "How's Mr. Author and Mr. Artist?"
"The book is a success. I have a book signing in New York next week," Scott answered, his smile a mile wide. "People love it, Mitch. They always talk about you when they see me in the streets."
Mitch smiled as he looked at Alex, wondering what he had to say. Alex was looking at Scott the while time until he was done talking.
"Oh, everything is doing well," Alex answered, blushing when everyone else laughed. "I have a art museum that will be open next month. It's going to be amazing."
Mitch nodded as he thought about everything that happened in the past year. He lost his parents, he almost got a divorce, Scott was diagnosed with cancer, his child and nieces and nephew were kidnapped, and he lost his stutter. This was probably the most eventful year of his life, more eventful than high school and that is saying a lot. He was interrupted from his thoughts when Travis kissed him on his temple.
"Baby, you blanked out. Is everything okay?"
Mitch looked at Travis and everyone else. They looked at him expectantly, waiting to see what he had to say. He took a deep breath and nodded, kissing Travis quickly.
"Yeah. I'm just thinking about how eventual this year was. A lot happened, but now everything is the way it is supposed to be and I can't be anymore thankful."
Travis smiled as he kissed Mitch once more. Ariana and Kirstin shared a look, happy that they didn't get a divorce themselves. Alex and Scott shared a look too, grateful that they didn't lose each other so long ago. Mitch looked up at Travis once more, his smile bright.
"I love you so much."
Mitch smiled at the sweet words, remembering when Travis told him those words after they were married. He closed his eyes, allowing a tear to run down his cheek. He opened them when Travis wiped one away, causing him to smile. He looked at everyone in his family, thankful for all of them.
"I love you so much too."
