Attention
"Mitch, wake up. We're okay."
Mitch felt his eyes open slowly, feeling no pain whatsoever. He took a deep breath, realizing that he is no longer alive.
*I knew it. We're dead. We couldn't save our children. I'm so sorry.*
"Mitch, we're alive. We're okay. We survived."
*What?*
You're alive. Travis managed to get out of the way. You fainted moments before Travis moved. Get McKenna.
"Babe?" Travis asked, his hand gripping Mitch's. Mitch looked at Travis, breathing heavily. "We're okay. We're not dead."
"We're not?" Mitch asked, looking at his surroundings. His siblings and his sibling-in-laws nodded while Charlotte replied with 'yes'. "Oh, tha-tha-ank God."
"Tell me about it," Scott murmured, smiling at Alex. He looked at the cars passing him and he sighed as he looked down at his watch. "It's about 11. We've been driving for a little while. How many hours do we have left until we go to Visalia?"
"Visalia?" Alex asked, looking at Scott. Ariana looked at Kirstin, an eyebrow raised. "Why do we need to go there?"
Kirstin was about to answer when Charlotte cleared her throat. Everyone turned to her, waiting for an answer. She cleared her throat once more, a smile on her face.
"The kids are there. You three are very smart."
~~~
Sara and McKenna fell asleep in Matt's arms, the stains of their tears still on their cheeks. Matt ran his hands down their backs, exhaustion clouding his vision. He blinked his eyes, wanting to stay awake. Those men could hurt Sara and McKenna and he wouldn't be able to protect them. The door then opened and Lilliana walked down, smirking at her older cousin. Matt glared at her as he held onto his siblings.
"Why are you doing this?" He asked, his voice full of hatred. Lilliana laughed a bit, shaking her head. "Tell me!"
"A lot of reasons," Lilliana told him, shaking her head. She say down, making herself comfortable. "It started when my mom kissed another woman."
Kirstin looked down when Lilliana began to cry. She couldn't believe that this was happening, especially with her moms! They loved each other so much!
"How dare you?" Lilliana yelled, her glare intensifying. Kirstin became scared, not wanting to look at her daughter. "You know, if you haven't been focusing on GrandPoppy Kevin, you and Mama will not have a risk of getting a divorce!"
"Your grandfather has Alzheimer's so of course I'm going to focus on him," Kirstin fought back, shaking her head. She then took a deep breath, driving when the light turned green. "You cannot tell your mom."
"Yeah, okay Mom."
Kirstin looked back at her daughter to see her glaring at the front window. She then grabbed her daughter's hand and squeezed it, taking it back when the younger female took it back forcibly.
"You have no right to do that! If you're not going to tell her, I will!"
"I am," Kirstin promised, her daughter scaring her a bit. "I love your mom too much to do that."
"Yeah, it's not like you kissed another woman or anything. You totally love her. It's all GrandPoppy's fault. If you never went to his house, you would have never kissed his caretaker!"
"So, you blamed GrandGrand Kevin for your mom kissing that woman?" Matt asked, shaking his head. When Lilliana nodded, he scoffed loudly. "So you lied about wanting to get attention?"
"Well, if calling the hospital to tell them to get GrandPoppy off of life support, opening every window the night before your dad had that fever and pneumonia, and getting Mark, Matthew, and Nash to kill Mitch is what you call attention, then yes. I tied to kill them all so I could get attention," Lilliana admitted, smirking when Matthew gasped. "You're lucky. Your other dad, Travis, and my moms will be okay. Also, I knew that having McKenna in a jacket like that will make her get a fever."
"She could die from that!"
"Why do you think I did it?"
Lilliana laughed loudly as she shook her head. She went back upstairs, slamming the door. Matthew gripped Sara and McKenna tightly, not liking how his cousin's skin felt like it was burning. He began to cry, wanting everything to be okay.
It will. Your parents are coming, Matt. I promise.
Matt looked up at the ceiling, smiling a bit. He closed his eyes, feeling his grandfather's present near him. He kissed his sister and cousin's foreheads softly, hugging them closer.
"I trust you, GrandGrand Avi. I miss you."
I miss you too. You're going to be okay, Matt. All three of you.
~~~
The car drove slowly through the streets, the city lights brighter than the stars in the sky. Kirstin told Travis directions, pointing ever once in a while. Scott went back to sleep, his head on Alex's shoulder. Alex rubbed his husband's back softly, kissing his forehead once in a while. Ariana held Kirstin's hand, brushing her fingers across her wife's knuckles every once in a while. Charlotte stayed quiet while Mitch was out of it the entire time since the almost accident.
"Mitch?"
Mitch nodded as he looked over at Travis. His husband took his hand and kissed it sweetly, not letting go. Mitch smiled and nodded, looking at the front window. Travis took a deep breath before saying what he had to say.
"Whatever happens, McKenna will always love us. She would never be mad at us. Like she says, she'll be with your parents again. She's not scared. She's ready."
Mitch nodded as he allowed tears to run down his face. McKenna is only eight and she is already thinking about the inevitable. She talks endlessly about how beautiful Heaven is and how she can't wait to receive her wings. She never once showed fear towards death and encouraged others to think the same. She is the smartest person Mitch ever got to meet.
" I kn-kn-now," Mitch replied, wiping his eyes with his free hand. Kirstin rubbed his back, tearing up herself. "I ju-ju-ust wa-wa-ant her here."
"I know, love. I know."
Travis kissed Mitch's hand once, letting his own tears escaped. Ariana wiped her eyes quickly in hopes to not let her makeup run. Charlotte smiled, wondering why she would wanted to hurt and tear such a beautiful family apart. Alex smiled as he kissed Scott's forehead, gasping slightly.
No, not now. Not now, please!
"Alex, what's wrong?"
Ariana's voice got him out of his worrisome thoughts. He looked at her, shaking his head rapidly. He took one more deep breath as he looked at his husband once more.
"Scott has a fever."
