~ prologue ~

School sucks. I mean really, really sucks.

Granted, I hadn't gone for the last three years, but you have to wake up early for school.

Which means alarms. I hate alarms too. They wake you up, even if it's from a really, really good dream. A brilliant dream.

The alarm plays, then you wake up and you forget the really great dream and you can't remember it.

Alarms were made by the devil, I'm sure. Who else would make the evil device that tortures us awake?

Schools don't care if you don't want to wake up. They don't care about your dream that it woke you up from. Or how much torture and pain it puts you through.

They only ever care about grades and their reputation.

My alarm rudely woke me up as I blindly tossed back the covers and reached for the devil-spawned alarm clock. When I made contact with it, I launched it back into the murky corners of hell, known as my bedroom.

If you couldn't tell, I'm not a morning person. I hate everything about them. The sun, waking up early, alarms and school.

Hell seemed to absorb my alarm clock as it finally shut up. I reluctantly pulled myself out of the bed and stretched whilst yawning.

Groaning, I headed into my ensuite bathroom and climbed into the shower. My legs trembled slightly from the pain in my muscles, I was thankful for the shower seat in my bathtub. Or I would have fallen flat on my face.

With slightly shaking hands I turned on the hot water and held the shower head over my body, wincing at the heat on my freezing limbs.

I massaged shampoo and conditioner into my hair, and brushed it through until it was silky. The soapy suds flew down my skin as the water washed them away.

The smell of cherries lingered in the air from my shampoo. I lathered the flannel with my cherry body wash and slid it over my cold skin. Bubbles coated my body as the water carried them away and down the drain.

Once I had gotten rid of all of the bubbles and soap suds, I carefully climbed out of the bath and wrapped myself in a soft, warm towel.

My teeth chattered slightly as goosebumps coated my skin. I pulled on my fluffy socks and my underwear and stood infront of my mirror.

A feeling of sadness washed over me as I took in my appearance. I was pale, my hair was thin and limp, I still hadn't gained any weight so I was still skinny and my eyes were swaddled in black bags.

For me, it was normal to look like death, due to my illness... I got sick when I was nine and I got better at sixteen but my body still didn't look healthy.

My light brown hair reached just to my shoulders, it had started growing back about a year ago but it was agonizingly slow.

I browsed through the clothing options in my closet, deciding on what impression I wanted to make on my first day. Nerves filled my small body, I was scared. I hadn't been to school in years, because of my illness. My parents and my doctor thought I was too frail and weak and we couldn't risk any infections.

My eyes landed on a pair of skinny jeans as I reached out for them. I paired it with a white tank top, black converse, a pink hoodie, pink heart earrings and braided my hair.

I shakily did my makeup before grabbing my backpack and heading downstairs. The lights were off and both cars were gone so I assumed my parents had gone to work and my brother had gone wherever.

My parents owned a private medical practice, so they were away most days and nights, often staying in the offices to avoid wasted time. Whilst my older brother James was supposedly a college student. He didn't attend most of the time and when he did, he was high or drunk out of his mind.

The stack of my books were on the table, with a bottle of water, fifteen dollars, my phone, headphones and my pain medication. I shoved them into my backpack and headed out the door towards the bus stop.

My headphones played olivia rodrigo 'vampire' as the bus pulled up. As I stepped on, everybody stared at me, the new kid.

I was an intruder on their school bus, I expected a few looks but not the entire bus staring at me. The only empty seat was at the front, so I sat down and replayed my music.

The bus journey took about half an hour, but I didn't care, it was time to relax and catch up on sleep.

Despite my music being on full blast, I could still hear the loud conversations bouncing across the bus from the back which travelled to the front.

When we arrived at the school, people pushed past me so I was the last to climb off of the sweaty bus that stank of body odour.

Most students were standing at their cars or sitting on the benches or grass with groups of their friends. Stares were thrown my way as I walked past them.

I walked into the school building and tried to find my way to the office, but it was a maze of corridors and I ended up going round in a circle. My eyes landed on a girl stood by herself at a locker, I approached her nervously as she smiled.

"Hi. Sorry, I'm new and I can't find the office. Could you tell me the way please?" My voice trembled slightly as the girl looked up at me. She had dark brown curls, and hazel eyes.

She nodded and smiled, picking herself off her locker and leading the way. "Sure. I'm Ebony-Jade, but most people call me EJ or Ebony." Ebony told me as we walked the corridors, side by side.

Ebony opened a door and I followed her inside. A lady sat at a desk, looking up at us with a bored and uninterested expression on her face. "Hi Miss Slater, this is the new girl. Um-" Ebony cut off as she realized she didn't know my name.

"Evie- Evelyn Cullen." I supplied as the receptionist typed my name up and printed a sheet of paper. She handed it to me and then made fleeing gestures with her hand as we left, giggling. "Thanks, Ebony." I smiled as she held two thumbs up.

I looked at my timetable and found my locker number, which Ebony showed me to, which was opposite hers. "Let's see what you have." She smiled as she stole the sheet of paper from my hands.

"Double food technology,  a short break, biology and english, lunch and then double history." She read out a smile on her face. "You have food, english and history with me." I nodded, greatful that I had atleast one friend in that class. "I'm heading there now, so you might as well walk with me." Ebony grabbed my hand and pulled me after her.

The food rooms were on the other side of the school building, we walked together as everyone stared at the idea of a new girl. I pulled my hoodie tighter as Ebony refused to release my hand from her grip.

The bell rang signalling the start of our cooking lesson. We walked in together as Ebony talked to the teacher, introducing me. She waved at me as I smiled awkwardly. "Well, Evie. I'm going to pair you with Ebony, here. Welcome to Lawrence High." I nodded and followed Ebony to the farthest bench at the back.

"Mrs Watson is great. She's like my favourite teacher." Ebony kept up a constant stream of chatter as we waited for the rest of the class to arrive.

We were told we were going to be making blondies as Ebony cheered, drawing more attention to our bench then had already been on me. People were seemingly obsessed with the idea of having a new girl.

Anywhere I went, people stared at me, and I was beginning to get annoyed with it. Every school has new students, and it wasn't like I joined halfway through the year, it was only the fourth week of school.

My doctor wanted me to have a few more weeks rest before I joined school, so instead of starting the school year  in September like everyone else, I stared it in early October.

Ebony and I stood up and walked up to the front and collected our ingredients. I weighed the sugar, flour and butter and added them in the bowl with two eggs, two teaspoons of vanilla extract and baking soda.

I whisked the mixture until it was combined and poured chocolate chips into my mixture. "Where did you get chocolate chips from?" Ebony asked, astonished. "I didn't see them up there." She pouted as I handed her the half empty bag.

"You can have the rest. I brought them from home." I smiled as she grinned at me and poured the entire remains of chocolate chips into her bowl of batter.

I spooned my mixture into a baking tray and spread it out evenly. The oven was on the other side of our bench and I took my finished tray of blondie batter to it.

Something stood infront of my feet as I tripped, over someone's foot and they pushed my tray onto the floor. "You bitch." I growled as I looked up at a boy seemingly made of steel.

Through his shirt I could see the lines of his abs. I looked down and saw his foot had been placed in my way on purpose. "You tripped me on purpose." He scoffed and pushed my shoulder. I picked up the half empty bag of flour and emptied the contents over his head.

The whole class went quiet as his eyes narrowed and his hand raised. "Mr Richards, go and get yourself cleaned up and then come back for detention after school. I saw you trip her." I smiled triumphantly as I picked up my ruined tray of blondie batter.

Ebony was laughing as he stormed out of the room, I emptied my batter into the bin. "It touched the floor." I pouted as I started to wash up my bowl and oven tray. The used and dirty bowl, tubs were clattered over the bench on Ebony's side.

Running the sink, I washed up what we had used and dried them as Ebony cleaned the countertop. She waited for her blondies to cook as I swung my legs side to side on the counter.

"You can share my blondie mix." Ebony declared as she splashed me with water from the tap. "Also, new girl, you must have a death wish to chuck flour over Alex Richards. Nobody dares to stand up to him and his friends." I rolled my eyes.

Every school had the group of bad boys, the stereotypical rude, selfish, angry and violent boys who nobody would stand up to. And on my first day, I had already pissed them off.

good job evie

The class finished as Ebony got her blondies out of the oven and put them in her box, given by the teacher. We walked out together as I somehow managed to hit another human wall.

They barged through me as I stumbled slightly. I turned to see a tall boy glaring at me. "Watch where you're walking, bitch." He growled as I rolled my eyes.

I wasn't going to let somebody talk to me that way. "You fucking barged into me, dickhead. But of course, in your pea sized brain, you're innocent, you can do no wrong. And the entire school let you get away with that idea, but I won't. I didn't walk into you, you did me, so watch where you go next time, and don't be impolite to someone you just met!" I ranted as the entire corridor grew quiet.

Everyone was staring at me, I noticed four other guys behind this one, one of them the guy from cooking class. "Maybe you should spend more time in class then fucking whoever will touch you. Then you would know decency." The entire corridor gasped as three guys at the back of the group were stifling laughter.
