XXIV
Third Person POV
The paladins flew the lions to follow behind Lotor's ship, Pidge keeping an eye on where the tracker was.
"Lotor's cruiser is on the other side of this planet," She says. "At our current speed, we'll be within attack range in an hour."
"Good," Keith speaks. "Hold formation."
As the paladins were flying, the Blue Lion bumped into the Yellow Lion. "Oh, apologies Hunk," Allura says.
"Mm, is attacking right now such a good idea?" Hunk asked. "You know since not everyone is so great with their lions?"
"Do you mean me, specifically?" Allura questioned.
"You? No. No way, I didn't-" Hunk stuttered. "I'm just simply pointing out that more than half the team are in new lions. Maybe now's not a great time to bite off more than we chew."
"You can blame our hot-headed leader for that one," Lance complained.
"First, you want me to lead, then you complain about how I do it," Keith states. "Prince Lotor is the heir to the Galra throne. We could end his reign right now."
"Allura, are you doing ok in Blue?" Lance asked.
"I'm fine," She responded. "I've been flying the castle for half my life. I just need a few ticks to adjust to the lion."
"Good, because we're going in," Keith says.
"Keith I really don't think this is the best idea to do with everyone being so unfamiliar with their lions," Nyle spoke.
"Just trust me," Keith responded.
As the paladins started heading closer to the ship, Keith looked at his dashboard to see something moving. "I'm detecting movement."
"So much for the element of surprise," Lance says.
Only one fighter emerged from the ship, heading to the paladins.
"It's just a single fighter," Hunk says, honing in on the fighter. "Where's the rest of them?"
"Probably scrambling as we speak," Keith says. "Let's take it out."
The Black Lion started speeding towards the fighter before the Red lion sped over, bumping the Black Lion back.
"Lance, what are you doing?" Keith asked.
"Sorry!" Lance exclaimed. "Red here is a lot faster than I'm used to."
Nyle looked around, not being able to find the fighter. "Hey wait, where'd the fighter go?"
The fighter then started shooting at the lions, causing them to spread out.
The fighter focused on hitting the Black Lion as Keith tried to evade the attacks. "I can't shake him," Keith says. "Someone get this guy off my tail!"
"Coming in on your six," Pidge says as the Green, Blue, and Yellow Lions flew over before shooting at the fighter.
The fighter evaded the shots, causing the lions to shoot at the Black Lion.
"Allura!" Keith shouted as the Blue Lion shot at the Black Lion.
"I'm sorry Keith!" She replied.
"Seriously, does this thing have breaks?" Lance asked, trying to get the Red Lion to stop.
The fighter then began to fire at the Black Lion again before starting to fire at the other lions as well.
The Blue Lion began chasing the fighter before it quickly pulled up, causing the Blue and Yellow Lions to crash into each other.
"Whoa!" Lance exclaimed. "What's with this guy? He's playing us against ourselves."
"I think it might be Lotor himself," Nyle says.
"Ow. Allura, you ok over there?" Hunk asked.
"I'm fine," Allura responded. "But these controls aren't responding, not like the castle. What's wrong with you lion? Do as I command! Move!"
"Maybe someone should suggest to Allura that flying the lion is different than flying the castle," Pidge says.
"Hey, I already told her that yelling at her lion wouldn't work," Lance says. "Didn't go over well. She yelled at me too."
"Yeah, count me out," Hunk says. "She scares me when she's under pressure."
"I can hear you," Allura says.
Nyle groaned and rolled her eyes. "Would you knock it off?? All of you!"
"Keith, what should we do?" Pidge asked.
"How bout this?" Keith started. "Everyone stay out of my way."
"Great. Great leadership," Lance says sarcastically.
Keith started shooting at the fighter before the fighter started firing back at the Black Lion.
"Okay, this isn't working," Keith states. "We need to form Voltron. Everyone! In formation! Nyle, keep him busy!"
"Got it!" Nyle replied.
The paladins started flying upwards in formation, yet nothing happened.
"Uh, guys?" Hunk questioned. "Guys, I'm not really feeling that Voltron feeling."
"Keep going," Keith responded.
The fighter came up towards Voltron as the Purple Lion flew behind it. "Guys that fighter is on your left. Why hasn't Voltron been formed yet?"
"It's not happening!" Pidge replied.
"What is going on?" Keith exclaimed.
"Guys watch it!" Nyle shouted as the fighter started shooting again, causing the paladins to separate from the formation.
"Well that was embarrassing," Lance says.
"So, should we call it quits?" Hunk questioned. "Maybe go back, regroup, get a meal?"
"No!" Keith shouted. "I know everyone is struggling, but we can't let Lotor slip away."
The paladins had no other choice but to follow behind the fighter and soon went towards a planet.
"He's trying to hide from us," Keith states.
"We may not want to follow him. We don't know what's in there," Pidge warns.
Keith only ignored Pidge as he made a beeline towards the fighter before everyone's controls started going haywire.
"Guys, we have a problem," Pidge states. "My sensors are going crazy. I think it's due to this planet's atmosphere and what must be strange magnetic poles."
"We can't worry about that now," Keith responded. "I'm not letting this guy get away."
"Keith, without accurate sensors, or working equipment, we're not gonna be able to tell what's up or down, where we are, or how to get out. I say we fall back," Pidge advises.
"No, keep going," Keith urged.
"What? All I heard was 'going'," Hunk says. "Are we going back? Is anyone else getting this static?"
"I'm losing visuals on you all!" Allura exclaimed. "I need you to slow down!"
"We gotta keep up," Keith starts. "He's getting away."
"I can't understand anything! You guys are breaking up for me!" Nyle shouted. "We need to stop and think of something!"
"Guys, I think this gas is messing with our radios," Hunk says. "We gotta stay close if we want to be able to communicate."
The paladins kept on the fighter's tail, Allura starting to lag behind. "I think we made it through the worst of it," Lance says before screaming as he dodged an ice spike.
"Allura took a hit!" Hunk exclaimed. "I'm going after her."
"Hunk!" Keith yelled as the Yellow Lion flew off. "The rest of you, stay on me."
The Black Lion kept the chase for the fighter before Lance spoke up. "Keith, we have to go back for Allura."
Keith ignored Lance as he kept speeding for the fighter.
"Keith, you're splitting up the team! Keith, don't do this!"
Keith yelled as he pulled the Black Lion, heading back for Allura.
"Is everyone alright? Nothing's broken? Nothing's bruised?" Nyle asked.
"I'm sorry I slowed us down," Allura says. "But the Blue Lion isn't listening to me."
"It's okay," Lance says. "We're a team. We stick together. Isn't that right, Keith?"
"It's not about the team," Keith replies. "We have a mission that's more important than any one of us. We need to find Lotor and stop him, and I plan on doing that right now."
Keith then flew away to go find the said Galra.
Lance sighed before turning to the team. "Come on guys. We'd better stick together."
The rest of the team started following Keith, staying close to each other. The team then entered an area where there was a bunch of red gas.
"This is crazy!" Hunk exclaimed. "We can't see a thing."
"Stay together," Keith responds. "He's around here somewhere. I know it."
Then Keith saw the fighter pass by and started flying towards him. "There!"
The other paladins followed suit and flew as well, looking for him.
"Where did he go?" Allura asked.
"No clue," Pidge responded. "Our radars are worthless in here."
"Hey, is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling this guy is just toying with us?" Hunk asked.
"Yeah, I'm kinda getting that feeling. And I don't like it," Nyle says.
"I'm with you big guy," Lance agrees. "I'm getting a case of the heebie-jeebies."
"He must have lured us here on purpose," Pidge says.
"Up there!" Keith yelled as the fighter came flying down next to them.
"We need to get out of here," Hunk says. "We've been led into a trap. The tables have turned. He's flipped the script! The hunters have become the hunted!"
"Hunk, shouting taglines is getting us nowhere!" Lance says.
"Lance is right," Keith says. "Remain calm and get ready. He's gonna attack again. Everyone, circle up. We need to be prepared for anything."
The paladins backed into each other and started keeping guard of their area.
"As soon as you see him, fire with everything you've got," Keith states.
The fighter then came flying down in front of the paladins. "Now! Fire!" Keith shouted as he fired at the ship but the shot caused an explosion in his face.
The Red Lion shot at the fighter but the same thing happened. The Blue Lion also attempted a shot but once again, the same thing happened. The Purple Lion tried shooting but history repeated itself. The explosions caused the lions to go in separate directions and divide them away from each other.
The fighter then began chasing the Blue Lion as it tried to run away. "Hello? Paladins, help!" Allura exclaimed.
The Blue Lion hit a hanging rock and drifted away before hiding from the fighter in between some rocks.
The fighter searched for the lion, but wasn't successful, allowing Allura to get some time to compose herself.
Lance POV
Keith's great leadership caused us all to be separated and now we're all vulnerable thanks to him. We all tried to tell him not to go, but he doesn't listen. So now we're here.
I tried looking around for anyone but nothing was coming up. Then I saw the Black Lion coming from under me.
"What happened back there? Where's the rest of the team?"
"This is all my fault," Keith responded. "I followed him right into this trap. Everyone warned me, but I didn't listen. I put the entire team in jeopardy."
"Yeah, you kinda did," I said, leaning back. "But now we gotta fix it."
"You're right," Keith started. "Let's go."
Then Keith and I started flying away to go find the team.
Hunk POV
"Hello? Anyone?" I asked, my voice wavering.
Oh god, what do I do? I'm alone, none of my radars are working. I'm freaking out!
I heard static and looked around before seeing a big giant pair of yellow eyes staring at me, I screamed out from the fear of it coming towards me.
"Is any- there? Hel-" That's Pidge's voice.
"Pidge!" I shouted.
"Hunk!" She shouted back.
"Oh my gosh! OMG. I'm so glad I found you," I said. "Okay, what kind of computer-y stuff can you do to fix the radar, find everyone, and get us all out of here?"
"Actually," Pidge started. "I can't recalibrate my system without a data constant, which I could've gotten had we not rushed into this gas planet."
"So, what are you saying?" I asked.
"I'm saying, we're stuck," She replied.
Allura POV
"Hello? Can anyone hear me?"
I need to find the paladins. I'm alone and I'm vulnerable like this. I could be attacked at any minute. Lotor's ship passed by me and I stayed as quiet as I could until he passed and I let out a small breath.
I need to figure something out and now. Lance was the pilot before me. Maybe if I just do something he did, it'll work.
"Okay. Stay calm Allura. Think. What would Lance do?"
I took a moment to think before leaning against the dashboard. "Hey there, Blue Lion. You know, you're really activating my particle barrier right now."
I waited to see if anything happened but nothing happened. I hung my head and groaned. "Nothing works! I've tried asking you nicely and I've tried commanding you. What do you want from me?"
I slumped in my seat and sighed some. "I can't do this. Everyone depends on me. The universe depends on me, but I can't control everything. I, I need your help."
I heard a growl before seeing the area around my cockpit light up blue, hearing my lion talking to me. "I can hear you."
That moment of peace was short-lived when I got blasted out of my hiding place. Lotor found me. I started to fly away, trying to put some distance between us. He shot above me, causing boulders to fall. I managed to dodge them, but then I was struck again by Lotor. I fell down some kind of cliff before getting my balance back.
"Help me. Guide me. I can't do it alone."
A beeping interrupted my thoughts, showing me sonar imaging. I activated the sonar and my lion roared, mapping out my surroundings. "A sonar map. Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Blue?"
I started flying faster, and even though I was getting through all the obstacles, he was getting closer. Then a blast came and made Lotor back away a bit and I saw the Purple Lion flying next to me.
"Nyle! I needed that save. Thank you."
"No problem. Now, what do we do?" She asked.
"The Blue Lion has allowed me to activate sonar mapping. I know the layout of where we are. Just follow me," I responded.
"Got it. I'll stay on your tail."
I flew into the gas from before so that he couldn't fire at us and got behind him. "Now, let's see if this freeze ray works in here," I spoke to myself.
I fired the ray at Lotor's ship, freezing the side of it. He retreated away from us, leaving us to breathe.
"We did it Blue!" I shouted.
"Nice shot Allura!" Nyle shouted.
"Thank you. Now, we need to find the other paladins," I replied.
"How do we do that? Will the sonar work for that?" Nyle asked.
"It should. Now let's go get our friends back," I said.
Pidge POV
"Hey, Pidge," Hunk started. "Here's the scenario. You're stranded on a scary gas planet, and you only have one food to eat for the rest of your life. What's it gonna be? Maybe a burrito? You like burritos, right? Mine would be a burrito."
"Hailing Pidge and Hunk," Allura's voice came through the intercom. "Are you paladins looking for an exit?"
"No way! You guys found us!" Hunk yelled.
The rest of the lions started flying towards us, showing everyone there.
"Actually, Allura found you," Keith spoke. "She found all of us. She was able to connect with her lion."
"Wow! How did you do it?" I asked.
"I just had to get in a Lance-like mindset and stop thinking so much," She spoke.
"Yeah, think like Lance," He replied. "Wait a minute! Are you calling me dumb?"
"No, I'm calling you a natural," Allura replied.
"Naturally dumb," Hunk says.
"Yeah, he was born with it," I teased.
"With how he acts I would guess he was twice as dumb," Nyle says.
"Look, I'm glad we're all making fun of Lance," Keith started. "But we still have to find a way out of here."
"Follow me," Allura says. "I know a way out. Wait a tick. Everyone, we have company. it looks like Lotor called for backup."
"Oh man, it's always something," Hunk says.
"We have to form Voltron," Keith mentions.
"But we were not able to form Voltron last time we tried," Allura adds.
"We have to keep trying," Keith responds. "We may have come here fragmented and disorganized, but the only way we're getting out of here is if we work together. This is our team. Shiro believed in us. We have to believe in ourselves. Who's with me?"
The rest of us all shouted in agreement.
"Now, form Voltron," Keith shouted.
All of us flew up, forming Voltron on the way up as the Purple Lion followed behind us.
"Hunk, I'm a leg!" Allura exclaimed.
"Pretty cool, right?" Hunk adds.
We started flying through all the lasers firing at us, forming the shield to avoid being hit by the ion cannon.
The shot deflected off of our shield and destroyed a bunch of fighters and a cruiser. We then formed the sword and cut straight through a cruiser. After all the smoke disappeared, I noticed Lotor retreating.
"Lotor's getting away. Should we go after him?" I asked.
"No," Keith replied. "Pushing the team too hard is what got us in this mess in the first place. We'll face him again when we're ready."
"Roger that, team leader," Lance adds.
We flew back towards the castle, separating back into lions and getting some rest for a while.
