XLII

Nyle POV

We all piled into the Black Lion's mouth and checked over Shiro, trying to see if he was alright.

"Is, is he gonna be ok?" Hunk asked.

"Only time will tell if this body will accept Shiro's consciousness," Allura spoke.

"Is there anything we can do to help?" Lance asked.

"I've tried contacting the Voltron Coalition, but I can't get through to anyone. It doesn't make sense," Pidge adds. "There might be some distortion I'm not picking up on. Maybe we need to get into the upper atmosphere for a better signal?"

"The lions aren't going anywhere without recharging their power cores," Hunk says.

"The battle with Lotor severely depleted them," Allura adds. "If we had the Castle of Lions we could recharge them, but..."

We sat in silence for a moment before Pidge spoke. "Is there another way to recharge them?"

"They can recharge naturally given enough time and ambient energy, but that might take pheobs," Coran says.

"There's gotta be something we can do," Keith spoke.

"We are on the Dalterian Belt, home to the element faunatonium," Coran says. "We may be able to use it as a temporary solution."

"Faunatonium?" Lance questioned. "How will that charge the power cores?"

"Well, you see, it involves field fluctuations-" Coran starts before he's interrupted.

"You know what? Never mind," Lance adds. "Magic or something. Sure."

"Not far off," Coran says. "We're going to use the element to expand the energy particles within the cores. But first, we need a yalmor."

"Wait, hold on," I started. "There's yalmors on this planet Coran?"

"How do you think we find the faunatonium? Yalmors have a nose for the stuff," Coran responded.

"Okay," Keith starts. "You guys go find a yalmor and get this faunatonium. I'll stay with Shiro."

"I'll stay as well," Allura says. "I may have exhausted the limits of what I learned on Oriande, but I still might be able to help in some way."

"All right, then, we'll get started," Coran says.

"Wait," Romelle says. "You just fought Lotor, defeated him, stopped an explosion that could have destroyed reality, took your friend's consciousness from the Black Lion of Voltron and put it inside his clone, and now we're simply moving on?"

"Trust me, I'm always saying the exact same thing, but these guys like to move on," Hunk says.

"I'll catch up, give me a second," I spoke, rubbing Mereida's back to keep her asleep.

They walk out as I went up to Keith. He got the message without me saying anything and gently took her into his arms. I kissed his head and smiled softly.

"He's gonna be just fine Keith, I know it," I said softly.

He smiled back at me and held my hand. "I hope so. You can't imagine all he's done for me. You should go catch up with the others. I'll make sure she doesn't wake up."

I laughed softly and held his cheek before kissing him. I pulled back after a few moments before humming. "We'll be back soon."

I kissed Mereida's head before leaving with the others, catching up to them. We walked for a bit, finding ourselves in the forest.

"Wow, this is so pretty," I said under my breath.

I jumped when I heard a loud sneeze before looking at the person who sneezed, which was Coran.

"This looks like a yalmor patch," He says before licking one of the flowers, walking away. "Yep, yalmors definitely sprayed here."

I recoiled in disgust and scrunched up my nose. "That's disgusting!"

We followed Coran as he did some weird call, and got some noises in return before following them.

"There's a yalmor!" He whispered.

"Wow. They're a lot uglier than I thought they'd be," Lance says.

I laughed and rolled my eyes. "Say that to yourself, Lance."

He narrowed his gaze and pushed my shoulder, making me laugh more.

"I think it's cute," Pidge says. "You know, in a creepy, hideous, sort of way. Like you, Lance."

I laughed more and high-fived Pidge. "That was good."

"Shh!" Coran shushed. "Yalmors are extremely aggressive. Any sign of weakness and they attack. You gotta corner it, and make it think you're the bigger, meaner yalmor. Alfor and I used the Squelzian Technique to wrangle up some yalmors."

"Are all ancient Alteans like this?" Romelle asked, seeing Coran move weirdly.

"Well, we only know two," Pidge says.

Coran went up to the yalmor, yelling as he tried to scare it. But it ended up attacking him which made him jump into Hunk. Hunk stumbled backward which made Lance hit his behind on something and fall in front of some kind of creature.

"Oh, hi, there, little fella," Lance says, waving to it.

It got scared and sprayed us with something. I coughed and tried to wave off the rest of the spray. When I looked around, I noticed that we were extremely tiny.

"Oh no, this isn't good," I muttered.

"What the quizacker just happened?" Romelle asked.

"Uh, it's pronounced 'quiznak' and I have no idea," Pidge says.

There was a bunch of thumping, causing us to shake. "Uh, what's that sound?" Hunk asked.

"Lance, what the hell did you do?" I snarled.

"Nothing! I just bumped into-"

"What's that?" Coran interrupted as something stood right above us.

The creature bent down and we saw it was the yalmor. "Oh, no! It's the yalmor!" Coran shouts.

It roared and swung at us, causing us to run away. It started chasing us, almost everyone screaming.

"Adventures are not fun!" Romelle shouts.

"Thank you! That's what I'm always saying!" Hunk shouts.

Water started falling down, followed by some plates of grass.

"Watch out for that grass!" Coran yells.

"We're not running fast enough!" Lance shouts.

"Run at an angle!" Pidge shouts.

"How can I run at a--" Lance interrupts himself seeing Pidge run out from under the falling grass and followed her.

We eventually stopped running because of a rock in our way. And we wouldn't be able to get around it in time.

"We're trapped!" Romelle shouts.

As the yalmor approached us, Lance brought out his sniper and shot it up. Something dropped on its head, causing it to run away. But it splashed a puddle onto us, which basically caused a tsunami for us. We all lay on the ground, soaking wet. I coughed a little from the water that went into my nose.

Pidge got up, before pulling up a small screen. "Keith, do you copy? Allura? Krolia? Anyone?"

"I think because we're so small, the range our communications would normally reach, has dropped very, very low," I said.

"We're so small," Coran says. "It'll take us forever to get back to the rest of the crew."

"What are we going to do?" Romelle exclaimed.

We found our way into a crevasse to hide while we think of something.

"What is we're this quizacking small forever?" Romelle says.

"It's 'quiznacking' and yes, thank you, Romelle. What if?" Hunk says as he takes off his boot, letting water out of it.

"Coran, you said the faunatonium works on gluon field fluctuations, right?" Pidge questions.

"Correct. It expands atomic distance," Coran responded.

"Maybe it'll work to make us bigger," Pidge says.

"You might be onto something," Coran says.

"But how are we gonna find the faunatonium?" Lance asked.

"With a yalmor," Coran responded. "We'll lure one back here."

"Lure a yalmor? To us? Like this?" Romelle said.

"I mean, it's like, I think it and you say it," Hunk says.

"It'll be incredibly dangerous, and Hunk's our only hope," Coran says.

So the plan was to hang Hunk off a rope and use him as bait. Which seemed like a horrible idea to be honest.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Romelle says.

"You can't believe it? I am literal bait!" Hunk shouts. "How could I possibly let this happen?!"

"I told you, Hunk! You're the biggest meal and you scream the loudest," Coran says.

"I don't care that I--" He covered his mouth when he heard yelling, the grass rustling.

"Keep up that panicked yelling!" Coran shouts. "That's what we need to attract the yalmor."

"Seriously, guys!" Hunk shouts as the yalmor stopped right in front of him.

Hunk started to panic as the yalmor tried to eat him, but we ran to pull him up. We dropped down on the yalmor and let the rope go once we were all on its head.

"We've made it much further than seems possible!" Romelle exclaimed.

Then we heard screaming and looked up to see Hunk falling down towards the yalmor. He fell down on its head where we were, a little dazed.

"This is going well," Romelle says.

Then the yalmor starts to move as we hold onto its hair, trying to stay on.

"This is worse than being bait!" Hunk shouted.

"Yes!" Romelle yelled. "At least then you were the only one in danger!"

"Hey, Romelle!" Hunk yelled back.

The yalmor suddenly stopped and started digging, then it let out a loud roar. A bunch of yalmors then started to appear.

"What's going on?" Pidge asked.

"More yalmors!" Coran exclaimed. "If they link at the ears, we're sitting on a faunatonium wizplute!"

The yalmors start digging before they linked up, all bellowing.

"Whoo-hoo! Yalmor time!" Coran shouts. "Pay attention, Paladins! This is how you work together!"

"All right. Let's go," Pidge says.

"Wait, what?" Lance and Hunk asked.

"If we wanna get back to our regular size, we have to jump into the faunatonium," I said before following Coran and jumping off the yalmor.

We started almost 'snow-boarding' from the yalmor. We flew off of it and fell into bubbles of faunatonium.

We all grew back and fell on top of each other, groaning in pain at all the weight.

We gathered what we needed before heading back to the lions. We went back in and saw Shiro awake. We ran over, happy to see him.

"Shiro's looking better. All right!" Lance cheered.

"Where were you guys?" Keith asked. "We couldn't get a hold of you."

"Well, we were shrunk by a magic skunk, but we ended up using that sparkly dust that makes electricity bigger or whatever. We used it to unshrink ourselves. So, ready to charge up the lions?" Lance said, the other's faces completely lost.

Shiro then laughed and smiled at us. "It's good to be back," He spoke.
