VIII
Nyle POV
It's been about a week since our fight with the Balmera and I'm still tired from it, worn the fuck out. Allura's still resting up from basically resurrecting an entire animal. I'm worried about her, she didn't look too good. But, I'm just gonna keep my hopes up and say she'll get better. Coran had called us down to where Sendak was being held, apparently to attempt to get information from him.
"Okay, guys, Sendak's almost all hooked up. But, look, I have to warn you, this technology was used to keep Altean memories alive, not to interrogate prisoners." Coran mentions. Yeah but, we kinda need this don't we?
"Coran, we understand this isn't what the technology was meant for, but if we can extract Sendak's memories, we may gain valuable intelligence on Zarkon's troop locations," Shiro replied.
"Yeah, and then we can just be like, 'Knock-knock.' 'Who's there?' 'The avenging fury of Voltron, son'!" Lance yelled.
"Lance, could you tone it down? I have a major headache." I spat at him. I wasn't trying to be rude, I just wanted him to be a little quieter.
"Fascinating. So, how exactly does this work?" Pidge says while walking around the empty container, which I'm guessing is where Sendak's memories are gonna go.
"As the memories are extracted, they're written bit by bit on individual molecules of the micro-storage strands," Coran replied softly.
"When I go, I want all the stuff in my brain stored in a giant ship," Lance says with some kind if like dreamily smile on his face.
"The amount of information in your brain could be stored in a paper airplane," Keith states, and I'm not gonna lie, made me snicker.
"Oh, yeah? Well, the amount of information you have, Keith, could be..." I think Lance drew a blank.
"... Yeah?" Keith raised his eyebrow towards him.
"Uh... it's less than what I have!" I flinched at the loud noises and groaned, holding my head.
"Oh, good one, Lance!" And Hunk just made it worse by being louder.
"Would you stop?" I basically growled at them, but it made them shut up.
"So this is how you incorporated King Alfor's memories into the Castle of Lions?" Pidge asks, pressing her face against the container.
"Precisely, but it's never been attempted before on an unwilling participant," Coran says before pressing a few things before the thing activates, but nothing happened. Wow, shocker.
"Uh, is this what's supposed to be happening?" Hunk asks, completely confused.
"Let's give it some time," Shiro responded, staring intently at Sendak.
_____~~~_____
"Well, I can't wait around any more. I'm gonna hit the training deck." Keith says while walking away from us.
_____~~~_____
"Okay, if anyone needs me, I'll be in the lab. Maybe I can pull some information from Sendak's Galra Crystal." Pidge says before leaving the room.
_____~~~_____
"Time to feed the beast. I'm going to go make some breakfast." Hunk walked away as I rubbed my head.
"Well, I'm afraid I can't wait here any longer, either. I have a million duties to attend to. Between that Galra Crystal infecting our system, and then fighting off those ships and performing the Balmeran rejuvenation ceremony, the old Castle of Lions has taken quite a beating. Every system needs to be recharged and repaired." Coran says while stretching some.
"I'll stay. Somewhere in Sendak's mind is the information about Zarkon that we need." Shiro spoke softly.
"Okay, well, while you guys do that, I think I'm gonna get my chill on. Maybe kick back with a lemonade or space juice. Something." Lance started walking away as Coran stopped him.
"Oh, hold on there, space juice. You're going to come and help me." He replied.
"What? Why? Why me?" Lance exclaimed. Jesus Christ, he's gonna make my head explode with how loud he is.
"Because you're the last one here and because your activity isn't very important." Coran crossed his arms towards Lance. This was amusing to watch though.
"Wait, did I say 'chill with a good lemonade'? I meant I gotta do homework." Lance tried to reflect off of Coran trying to get him to clean.
"No. Too late." Coran waves off Lance's attempt.
Lance looked over to me and I could already sense trouble. "What about Nyle? She's not doing anything either!"
I flinched at the loud noise and grumbled, sighing. "I have a headache Lance. So would you hush? Because you're really irritating my head."
"Well, that answers your question, Lance, Nyleaya isn't feeling well so best to let her rest." Coran defended me as I started to walk off.
"I'm gonna walk around and see if my headache goes away soon." I rubbed my head and walked past them.
God my head was killing me, I don't know why either. I just started getting a really bad headache a couple of days ago, and it appeared out of nowhere. I might have to ask Pidge if she knows why my brain could be pounding out of my head for no reason. I started walking in the direction of where the Green Lion's hanger was and came in, walking over to where Pidge was.
I sat down on top of the table and pursed my lips. She looked up and stopped typing on her computer before giving me a smile. "Hey Ny, what brings you here?"
I shrugged and sighed some while humming. "I just wanted to know if you knew if something's wrong when a headache comes in out of fucking nowhere."
She looked at me confused for a moment before realizing what I was talking about. "Oh, well I'm not sure. Maybe it's because your body is changing itself? Yeah, I don't know why really." She says softly.
I nod and hum. "Yeah, maybe. It just feels like my fucking brain is escaping my skull."
"Well, the only causes I know are anxiety, noise, not eating well, not sleeping enough, not being active enough, posture, and hormones," Pidge says while naming each with a finger.
I sigh and lean back, trying to think if I didn't or did do some of these things. "I haven't been eating too good now that I think about it and my stress level is getting out of hand. And now that I obviously haven't slept the best with this dummy baby." I puffed my cheeks while whining as my head got worse.
I heard Pidge laugh some and looked down from the table, pouting. "Why're you laughing? I don't like being in pain!"
"I'm not laughing at you, but I don't think the baby would appreciate being called a 'dummy' Nyle."
"I don't care, baby's gonna have to learn that mama isn't the nicest person."
Pidge laughed more and got up from her chair. "Why don't we get something to eat?"
I thought for a minute before nodding, yawning. "Yeah, let's get going. I'm kinda hungry."
I got off the table and started walking along with Pidge. "I'm gonna nap after I eat. See if that helps at all." I was mostly talking to myself for that but I guess Pidge could hear me.
"Yeah, you probably should. Especially since it's harder for you to sleep. You're near five months now aren't you?" I nod to Pidge's question and hum.
"Yep, about a week from officially being halfway done with this dumbass pregnancy. That and I'm looking more and more like a balloon every day." I say, trying to be a little funny.
"You don't look like a balloon, your clothes are too baggy to really see anything. So I think you're good."
"Yea, but my armor isn't. So I gotta put something tight on that emphasizes the fact that I look like I'm sneaking shit into the movie theater."
Pidge laughed at that, and it made me feel good to make her laugh. "Calm down Ny, you'll be ok. And you know we're gonna make you stay out of missions when you get closer to having the baby right?"
I sigh and lean my head back. "I'm very aware, but I don't like the idea of letting you guys do something without my help. You get me?"
Pidge nodded and hums. "Yeah, I do. But we're only trying to look out for you."
"Ok, ok. I'll stop bitching alright?" I laughed a little before we got to the cafe and see Hunk behind a counter with food goo flying everywhere. "Oh my god! Hunk what the hell is going on in here?!"
"The goo has me pinned down!" Hunk yelled to us before the green substance hit him in the face, Pidge and I ran to the counter without getting hit.
Pidge handed us some plates before turning to us. "Okay, we're going to have to flank the goo to shut it down."
I nodded in agreement before hearing Hunk over my shoulder. "Okay, wait. Wait! It's been a pleasure cooking with you." He salutes both of us before running towards the tube. We follow in suit as Pidge and I holds the tube down while Hunk ties a knot, all of us quickly backing away.
"Probably a malfunction?" Pidge questions.
"Yeah, probably..." I replied softly.
"Yeah, yeah... Guess the kitchen system needs to be rebooted, too." Hunk states.
"Leave it for Coran?" Pidge asks and both of us nod, heading back towards the Green Lion's hanger aka, Pidge's lab.
I grab a chair this time and sat down while leaning back in my seat, yawning while pushing my hair back. "How did that even happen? How did you break it Hunk?"
Hunk gave me a look and shook his head. "I didn't break it! And I don't know what happened, it just started trying to kill me with food."
"Was it throwing strawberries at you too?" I raised an eyebrow and crossed my arms.
"Ok, now you're just being condescending." Hunk almost yelled towards me.
I rolled my eyes some and leaned my head back while grumbling some, the room staying silent for a little bit besides Pidge's keyboard tapping. "I bet if we can modulate the dynamics of this crystal, we'll be able to reverse engineer a lot of Galra tech. Don't you think, Hunk? Hunk, are you paying attention?" Pidge asks.
"What? No, I'm sorry. That whole food goo ambush really set me on edge, Pidge. If we can't trust food, we are lost as a culture." Hunk replied, still upset.
"Relax. I'm sure the Castle's just glitchy. It's 10,000 years old." Pidge said in a calm voice.
"Just don't freak out Hunk, I'm sure we'll be fine." I said, lifting my head up.
"Yeah, it does seem like the ship is not currently trying to kill us." Hunk mumbled under his breath.
"Okay, so, all the sensors are on the crystal. Hit the switch." Pidge says to Hunk, not looking away from her computer. Hunk went to press the switch but all of us started floating before he even touched anything.
"Hunk, did you accidentally hit the anti-gravity switch?" Pidge says while trying to reach to stuff.
"What the hell is going on?" I mutter to myself.
"Uh, no. There's no anti-gravity switch. Uh, is there?" Hunk asks, confused and slightly scared.
Pidge tried to reach for what I'm guessing is the switch she saw talking about before giving up and letting out a frustrated noise. "Curse my short arms!"
"Oh, I hate those little things! All right, forget it, Pidge. I'm going to swim toward you. Just hang on!" Hunk shouted.
"Hunk I don't thi-" He completely ignored me and tried moving from where he was.
"That's it. I'm all out of moves. Oh, I'm hungry again. I hope some food goo comes oozing out of these walls." Hunk says, giving up moving completely.
All us sat there for a while before Pidge perked up, making me think she had an idea. "Wait. Wait, wait. I have an idea. Grab on!" Both Hunk and I reached out, pulling all of us to each other.
"Yeah! We did it! Now, what?" Hunk asks.
"Now, kick me as hard as you can!" Pidge exclaimed.
"Wait, what?!" I say in disbelief
"What? No, we're friends." Hunk says.
"No, no. Kick me so I can fly across the room and get to the control panel." Pidge states.
"Oh, yeah that's sensible." I mumbled before Hunk and I kicked her across the room.
She got close but hit the wall above it and started going backwards. "Oh... oh, oh! No, no, no!"
"Damn! We almost had it!" I yelled, frustrated.
The door opened and we all fell to the ground, pretty hard might I add. "How can you guys be taking a nap while this castle is trying to kill us?" Lance basically shouted.
"Taking a nap? We've been floating around in Zero G! You know how scary that is?" Hunk yelled back at Lance.
"That's not scary! That's fun! I was almost ejected into space!" Lance exclaimed.
"I got attacked by killer food, and that's the most horrifying thing you can imagine! The stuff of nightmares! It'll haunt me to my grave!" Hunk screamed.
"Well, I had a robot trying to kill me!" Keith piped in.
"I don't care what you say, Coran. This castle has gone apples and bananas!" Lance yelled, turning the tables on Coran.
Coran let out a groan and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Perhaps the infection from Sendak's Galra crystal is worse than we thought."
"Then why don't we just say 'cyanara' and throw it out into space?" I suggested, crossing my arms.
"It's too late. When Sendak plugged it into the ship, it corrupted the entire system." Coran replied back.
"Sendak? Wait. Has anyone seen Shiro?" Keith asked.
"He said he was gonna stay with his holding pod until something came through. He might still be there." I told Keith, humming.
All of us started heading there and as soon as we got there, alarms started blaring and we rushed to Shiro. "Shiro, are you okay?" Pidge asks.
"Where's Sendak?" Keith asked when he saw that his pod was missing.
"I... I had to get him out of here. I was hearing his voice. He... He can't be trusted on this ship." Shiro spoke quietly, in a shaky voice.
"It is the ship! I got stuck in a cryo-pod, then, in an airlock. Keith got attacked by a robot, and Nyle, Hunk and Pidge got attacked by food. It's been a weird morning." Lance says, almost tiredly.
A couple beeps came from the computer and Coran let out a gasp. "What? How is that possible?" Coran says to himself.
"Coran, what's the matter?" I asked, a little worried.
"The ship is starting a wormhole jump!" Coran exclaimed and we all started running to the bridge to investigate the situation.
We get there and Allura was standing where she normally stood, creating a wormhole. "Allura, what's going on?" Shiro asks, concerned.
"We're going to Altea. We're going home. My father is taking us." Allura says, a daydream like tone in her voice. There's something wrong, most definitely.
We all went towards her and we were knocked back by a force field, King Alfor's stature appearing. "Stay away from my daughter!"
Shiro stood up and shouted towards Allura. "Allura, wake up!"
"The crystal must have corrupted King Alfor's artificial intelligence. It's taking over!" Coran yelled out.
Pidge did a scan and looked up towards us. "We're headed straight for a star and it's about to explode!"
"Father, I can see Altea." Allura says softly.
Coran started trying to get Allura back to us while we tried to find a way to get the castle away from the supernova star.
He eventually got her back with something about juniberries before she looked ahead of her. "That's not Altea."
"When that star goes supernova, it will destroy the entire system. Allura, you must reset the course and get us out of here!" Pidge yelled.
Allura had tried to get the castle away manually but was zapped back and the A.I. took over the controls.
"Father, please, I beg you to turn this ship around. If we don't do it soon, we will all perish!" Allura yelled at her father, trying to get him to get the castle the hell out of here!
I stopped listening after that and kept trying to turn the castle around. But I started listening again when Allura called to us. "Paladins, get to your Lions! I need you to slow the Castle's descent into the star."
"I can try to override the system to open the hangars." Coran says, going to his control panel.
All of us rushed to our lions, getting towards the front of the castle and put our boosters on max before trying to push the castle backwards from the star.
We kept pushing out lions way beyond their limit until Allura came on our screens. "Paladins, get to your hangars. We're getting out of here." She yelled and all of us immediately went into our lion's hangers, wormholeing away from the star right before it exploded.
We came back to the bridge to find Allura sitting down with Coran next to her, comforting her. All of us came around her and tried to comfort her. "I'm so sorry about your father, Princess." Shiro said in a soft voice.
"We all are." Hunk adds.
"Thank you. But that was not my father. The real King Alfor was a great man and a great father. He may not be here with us anymore, but his dream lives on through all of us, and his legacy is Voltron." She smiled to us and we sat there for a while before heading off to do our own thing.
I was heading to my room so I could try to de-stress and maybe nap. I was about to start my napping marathon when I heard knocking at my door. I got up and leaned on the door frame when it opened, a little surprised to see Keith standing there with a plate of food. "Uh, hey? What are you doing here?" I asked, way beyond confused.
He cleared his throat and scratched the back of his head. "Pidge, told me to come and give you this. She said you weren't eating enough apparently."
I laughed some and shook my head before taking the plate of food from him. "Well thanks for being the delivery boy Keith."
I heard him snicker when I turned my back to him. "Yeah ok, I'm not always gonna be the delivery boy. But, no problem. Also, can I talk to you about something?"
I put the food down on the desk in my room and turned to him, concerned. "Yeah, of course. What's the matter?"
He looked down for a moment and took a deep breath before looking back up at me. "I heard you, talking to Pidge yesterday and, she apparently said something about your baby. Ok just, make a long story short, is it mine...?" He stared straight at me, not looking away.
I froze, I wasn't planning on saying anything yet. But I guess I have no choice now. I sighed and bit my lip, slowly nodding. "Yeah, yeah it is. I, didn't wanna say anything yet because I was just scared. And, it was stupid so I didn't wanna bring it up."
"That's why you were so familiar to me when we met at that Garrison hospital."
"Probably but, you understand why I didn't say anything right?" I started getting quieter and slowly started looking down.
"I do, yeah. But, I also know that whenever you would've told me. My answer still would be the same. And, I'll be there."
My head jerked up and I stared at him with wide eyes. "Are, are you serious?"
He nodded and crossed his arms. "We can, talk about this later. You, eat and get some rest alright?"
I cleared my throat and nodded. "I, I will. You should get some rest too. I'll, see you later."
He nodded and gave a small smile before walking away, I let my door close and smiled widely like an idiot. I quickly ate my food before getting in my bed and started my napping marathon.
