Prologue
Tears are shed as everyone in the small, fume induced, white room hears the beeps filling the void of the room.
Laying in the center, is the pumping heart that gives the monitor's beeps life. The heart belongs to eighty-four year old Auggie Allis. Surrounding Auggie, are the owners of the mouths that release whimpers and sobs, his family.
The owner of the soul bounding, small circle, however is dry eyed. His wife is holding the frail hand of a dying man, attempting to stay strong. Their metal rings rubbing against one anothers, glimmering as one "proving" their love.
"You'll fight this. You aren't a quitter." Lacey whispers to herself, as if talking makes the eighty-four year old man stronger.
Six of the nine things are physically here that prove his love to an elderly woman. The ring, the woman herself, and four of his seven children. That doesn't mean the other three don't care however, they are just either too far away, or past the point of their father.
They are all sobbing, except for the one who is named after the dying man's true love. He has children of his own, who Austin is trying to look strong for.
The over populated, small, fume induced, white room with the four corners only has four dry eyes in it.
A small child who doesn't understand the technicality of the situation, the "love", the son, and the dying man.
What? Even the spirits are crying. Only the diety knows what will happen to Auggie, so the spirits cry of uncertainty, just like the living.
One of the spirits in this room is the love of the owner of the heart who makes sure the monitor beeps.
He loves him too. Maybe if they end up in the same place after this mess, they can be one soul, connected not by a metal circle on a finger, but by an overwhelming feeling of a shared emotion.
The overpopulated four cornered room is occupated by thirteen people physically.
A wife, a brother, three daughters, a son, five grandchildren, a nurse, and Auggie Allis.
There is no telling how many spirits are in the room, but six have decided to make themselves present if a medium were to ever walk into the room.
A son, a father, a mother, a great grandmother, a sister, and someone who would be willing to love in a life beyond our comprehension.
"Dad, can I hug grandpa?" the second smallest in this bundle of people asks the one named Austin.
"Yes, but be careful. Don't hit anything, okay?" while in the process of these words, a tear accidently slips.
Watching the young boy sends everyone into an emotional overdrive, and the whimpers become wails.
Begrudgingly, the brother leaves the side of the dying man. The endless cycle of work, food, sleep, survive has once more caught up to him. Without this pattern set up for the human race, all of us would die like the man in the middle is doing, but just faster than the others. The brother has to take the step of work. Earn money rather than mourn over a life long friend.
One by one people make the fume induced white room less compact. Five physical people are left in the room.
The wife, a daughter, a grand daughter, the nurse, and the dying man.
Spirits have come and gone. The love left unfortunately, room grew dim once that happened. The only spirit that has never left is the great grandmother, who was close to Auggie Allis.
The spirits that now occupy this four cornered room is the great grandmother, the life long best friend, and a son. Although, the son has left multiple times.
The wife has fallen asleep, and visiting hours are over. Every physical body has left other than her by now.
Quickly, another spirit enters the room. This spirit kisses the cheek of the scared wife. The scared wife wakes up, and realizes things will be okay. The room is no longer lit by a dim light, but a radiant one. The light bulb was never changed, mind you.
She takes off her ring, and she takes off her husband's. She doesn't take off these things because she has given up, but rather because they are pointless.
Their souls don't have to be tied, and even so, not because of two peices of shared metal.
Instead of setting the rings on the bedside table that is accompanied by medical equipment, she throws them out the window. As old as they are, the money spent on those rings don't even matter.
They don't need the rings for proof
If Auggie dies, which she begs her diety will not happen, she feels this ring will tie him down. From whatever happened in her dream, it ignited something in her brain. She doesn't remember though, all that is is the flipped switch in her head.
A symbol of their love is pointless when all that matters is their love, but even that doesn't matter.
The beeping increased slightly.
Why doesn't their rings or love matter?
Because he will always be loved vastly.
"Thank you."
This slips out of his lips and then their is an utter silence, except for the two breezes that slip past both of Lacey's cheeks.
