Hope Isn't for Suckers
The affair took place during the summer time as the sun was setting. There was a slight chill in the air but the small cluster of guests didn't mind one bit. Dozens of lanterns and twinkling lights beamed up and down the archway, illuminating the couple whose attention never once wavered from one another. The Texas stars started to peek through the tinting sky, gathering around to witness this event for themselves. If possible, it was by far the most stars anyone has ever seen in the night sky.
When they began to speak, they spoke only to each other. Completely aware, yet unaware, of the spectators listening. Holding onto each other's hands, gripping for dear life with sweaty palms. They didn't write anything down for the event even though many had been shocked that they had refused to. They wanted to speak from the heart, not from a piece of paper. And so that's what they did.
"All my life I was made to be someone else. I was never me, Lucas Friar. And at times I didn't even know who I was, or who I was supposed to be. It was like everyone expected something out of me and I never met that someone who would accept me for who I was. The good, the bad, and the in-between... and when I did eventually find that someone it took me years to actually see her, despite already having known her by chance on the subway."
"I don't believe in coincidences, I think it's just the world going hi. At first, I was blinded by who I thought I was supposed to be and because of that I had missed our world going hi. And maybe it was because I didn't want to see it. Because you scared me and no one would think to look at you and be scared. But I was, because you saw me for who I was... When I realized I had a chance with you, that was about the scariest moment of my life."
"I didn't know what to do. The circumstances weren't ideal but eventually it led us to this moment. The best moment of my life. Now I'll admit I was scared. Scared that you would realize it was me standing here and not someone else. But then when I saw you walk down that aisle, looking the way you do. Looking at me, the way you do. And I knew I had nothing to be afraid of. So maybe our chance the first time around didn't work out. And it may had taken awhile for us to get our second chance but I wasn't going to let you go once more. I wasn't ready before, but I am ready now. Tangling with you has been the best decision Lucas Friar has made in a very long time."
"Besides asking me to marry you of course." The voice of his bride made everyone laugh, lightening up the atmosphere from Lucas's vows.
People shifted in their seat, watching as the smirk on the brides face slowly softened to a smile. They didn't know if it was the lights that were the cause behind it but they all swore they saw her eyes twinkle in a way they've never seen before.
They thought she had looked beautiful before when she had walked down the aisle in between the two most important men in her life. The ones that taught her about life and all of its adventures, and when life was at an all time low they were there to pick her back up again. Because that's what father figures do. But even then, with a radiant smile on her face that infected the entire audience, they did not think she looked as beautiful as she did now.
So naturally, when she began to speak they had unconsciously leaned in until they were at the very edge of their seats. She carried so much emotion in her voice. So much passion that they held their breaths. Scared that one little sound even something quiet as their breathing would break her from her trance.
As they heard her speak they felt as if they were imposing on the couple. On the brides deepest thoughts and feelings that no one believed she could ever have, let alone speak them out loud in such a way. It wasn't as if she had never voiced out her affections for her soon to be husband but this felt different. It is different.
By the end, the women had tear stained faces. The men each smiling warmly at the couple, hearts filled as they held onto their respective dates just a little more tighter.
The bride gave a watery smile, one that Lucas returned. And without waiting for the officiant to continue, Lucas leaned forward and wrapped his arms around his blushing bride and kissed her sweetly on the lips. It was a brief kiss, one that was given simply because he could. Because his partner was everything he could ask for and for so long he didn't see it. And as she read her vows he didn't understand how he couldn't see it before. She was perfect. Perfectly imperfect just like him. And he loved her.
After a slight scolding from the officiant that neither the bride or groom could care for, they slipped each other's rings on their ring fingers. They were simple rings. They didn't particularly care for anything big and flashy as they believed that the best things in life happen to be the most subtle of things. In a way it was kind of like their relationship. It wasn't big, loud, and obvious... but it was always there. Hidden between all these pretenses, and in the background where sometimes even their silence spoke volumes.
And finally, when the officiant said, "you may now kiss your bride." Lucas gave her a kiss that spoke volumes.
At first it was a gentle caress of his lips against hers. A kiss that pulled on their heart strings as they poured their feelings into it. Showing their love for one another in a way that the other knew exactly how they felt if their words simply were not enough.
The kiss progressed from their innocent one to just a tad more fevered. Obvious impatience as they each remembered a time they had to live without this. Without the other half that seemed to mould perfectly with their own lips. Lucas, in particular, remembered the time he didn't take his moment. But now, now, was his moment.
His tongue glided skillfully on her bottom lip, a sign she knew that he wanted to deepen the kiss. She complied, willingly opened her mouth for his tongue to enter her mouth. The familiar battle of their tongues was much like the beginnings of their relationship. Constant battle of wits that they both always enjoyed to have. In the end he had won out as she gave into the passion of his mouth. Sighing, as he pressed her against his chest more firmly.
When they broke apart for air, gasping and shuddering from the rippling effects of their kiss, the whooshing of applause and whistles filled their ears. They smiled at one another in amusement, both had forgotten the audience they had but they most certainly knew that neither one of them (nor guest) would forget that kiss.
She laughed as he dipped her low and kissed her as another set of whistles filled the air. He pulled back slightly, gazing down at her as she gazed up at him. His blonde hair was swept off away from his face with a nice swirl. His face beaming as he stared down at her with sparkling eyes. The Stars winked just above him but he didn't notice as he stared down at her. Marveling at the way her cheeks appeared flushed from their kiss. Her button nose slightly red from the cold. Her eyes were fierce, daring in a way. He always loved that twinkle in her eyes.
"Why Ranger Rick, you just going to keep staring at me all day or what?"
"Why Mrs. Maya Penelope Friar, I'll be doing that for the rest of our lives." He pulled her back upright, refusing to let go of her however. "And you do realize that this now makes you Mrs Ranger Rick."
Her mouth dropped open slightly before a small smirk of a smile appeared on her face. "I suppose it does, doesn't it?" The conversation was quickly swept aside as everyone rushed forward to congratulate the happy couple.
Later on, when the party began and the speeches were all finished and cake eaten. Maya stood off to the side as she watched everyone she loved dancing and laughing. Lucas embraced her from behind, causing her to smile even wider. She noticed she was doing that a lot today...
"What are you thinking?" She rested her head against his chest as her eyes landed on a pregnant Riley dancing with Farkle. Their foreheads were touching, eyes closed as they danced to the slow song that Maya had specifically requested for them. No doubt, remembering their own wedding just a little over a year before, as the chorus started to the song of their first dance.
She remembered Riley's speech earlier, how much of a wreck it made the both of them. Specifically the last few words of her speech. She sighed, wistfully. "Just that, hope isn't for suckers after all." Riley seemed to have sensed her gaze as she glanced in her direction. She smiled brightly at her and winked.
Maya shook her head, smiling as she turned to face her husband. Wrapping her arms around his neck as his arms rested comfortably on her waist.
He leaned down and kissed her for the umpteenth time that night. She sighed against his lips, melting into him. Yup. Hope isn't for suckers.
