Chapter 4
Amelia's POV
After a while, I finally wake up. I blink and look around the room. Kristen is still here, looking at me. "Kristen?" I croak.
"Hey, Amelia!" She says. "How are you feeling?" Her eyes are kind and caring.
"My arm hurts." I tell her. I hear a knock on the door. Kristen gets up and opens it and a man walks in. He has brown hair and a beard. I try to read his nametag but it's blurry to my eyes.
"I'm Doctor Silber." He explains. "How are you feeling?" I feel a bit scared. He looks kind of like my dad, and my dad hit me.
"Her arm hurts." Kristen answers for me. He walks over and examines my arm. When he touches it, I yelp in pain.
"It's okay." Kristen says, rubbing my head. "Just another minute and he'll be done the examination." She's right. He pokes and prods it a bit more before nodding.
"We're gonna have to do an x-ray." He tells us.
"An x-ray?" I ask, my voice fearful. I've never gotten an x-ray before. I feel my heart beating faster in my chest as my eyes fill with tears.
"Shh, don't worry." She comforts me. "It's just a picture."
"Are you ready?" Doctor Silber asks.
"I don't know." I consider the question. "I think so?" Kristen helps me up and the three of us walk down the hall, and into the elevator. I feel the elevator go up and stop.
"6th floor." An automated voice announces. "Orthopedics."
"That means bones." Doctor Silber explains. We walk into a room with a lot of machines, and a little window showing a room with computers. "I'm going to go in there." He points to the little room. "I'll give you some instructions on how to move your arm, okay?" He gives me a heavy vest to put on before going into the room. Kristen follows him.
"No!" I shout, not wanting Kristen to leave.
"Amelia, honey, I have to go with him." She tells me. "But I'll be right there where you can see me the whole time. I nod, unhappily. Doctor Silber tells me to move my arm into certain positions and I hear some clicks.
"All done!" He says.
"Already?" I ask, surprised.
"Yup! Now you can go wait outside and I'll give you your results soon. Me and Kristen walk out of the room and sit down on blue plastic chairs outside.
"You're doing great." Kristen assures me. "Just a little longer and you can go home!
I look up at Kristen. "I don't have a home anymore." I say, my eyes filling with tears. It's a tough thing to admit. "My mommy and daddy don't want me." Kristen looks back at me with sad eyes.
"Come with me." She tells me. "I'm in a musical called The Lightning Thief."
I take a deep breath. "Okay." I nod. Kristen holds my hand, lightly rubbing her thumb over my palm. We wait for a few more minutes before Doctor Silber comes back.
"So," he states, "your arm is, in fact, broken. We're going to need to do a small procedure to fix it."
"What procedure?" I ask. "My teacher always tells us we should know the fire drill procedure but I always get distracted. What does that have to do with my arm?"
Doctor Silber laughs, pity in his eyes. "I mean a surgery."
"No!" I yell. "I don't want it!"
"Amelia, you need this surgery to make your arm better."
"No!"
"We'll talk about it later." She reasons. She gives the doctor her email and he says he'll be in touch. Then, we take the elevator again and go through the doors. I don't want surgery. I can't. I just can't. I sit in the backseat of her car and sob.
