Ch. 20 'Her' Name
Chase's POV: *yawns* "Wow I stayed up way too late. Everyone is probably up by now, eating breakfast or just hanging out... without me. I've been in my pup house for a long time but I still ate and all, I had extra food in case something like this happened. Good thing I'm too distracted to even feel my rage. But I do get bored, I would just lay on my bed and eventually my eyes would wander to my locked box. Of course I never opened it, I would just stare at it and... think."
There was a knock on his door.
Chase's POV: *groans* "Huh? Ugh...what is it now!?"
Chase: *opens door* "Marshall?"
Marshall: "Hey, Chase..." He said then looking around to see if anyone followed him.
Chase: *groans* "What do you want?" *catches himself* "I mean...why are you here? And talking to me?"
Marshall: "Well I um...need to tell you something, about yesterday and you know, how you were talking about the um girl that *clears throat* saved you?"
Chase: "Of course I do. Why?" He said sharply.
Marshall: *looks around* "Well...I-I need to speak to you privately, so can I come in?"
Chase: "Okay?"
Chase steps aside to let Marshall come inside. He closes the door.
Chase: "So what i-."
Marshall: "I remember the girl..." He said cutting him off.
Chase: *shocked* "Y-you do?! How?!"
Marshall: "I had a strange dream about a day similar to 'that' day...and I saw something, actually someone, but really I saw some pup. And I'm positive that it was her..."
Chase: "What did she look like?" He said rapidly.
Marshall: "I saw her from a distance, but I could tell that she was a regular size pup. Her ears were pointed. She had a short tail. She was pretty fast. Until..." He turned quiet.
Chase: *raises eyebrow* "Until what?"
Marshall: "S-she...*gulps*... well she..."
Flashback
Marshall: *shivering* "C-come on C-Chase can't you f-find the family f-faster!"
Chase: "I'm t-trying! But it isn't exactly easy y-you know!"
Marshall: *still shivering* "J-just hur-rry okay!"
Chase: "Wait! I t-think I see them!"
In the distance, a few feet away from them, there was a family. A mom, a dad, and a little girl, only four years old at the time.
Chase: "C-come on! T-this way! We don't have that much time!"
End of flashback
Chase: "Marshall!" He said shaking Marshall out of his thoughts.
Marshall: *shakes head* "Huh?"
Chase: "What happened to her?!"
Marshall: "She...she..." He drifted off again.
Flashback
They finally found the family and started to walk back to the lookout until they got lost.
Chase: "Ugh! Our pup t-tags don't work! And the weather is getting worse!"
Marshall: "Just h-how far are we f-from the lookout?!"
Chase: "I can't tell." He said softly, but still in hearing range.
Marshall: "Does t-that mean we're-?"
Chase: "No! We just don't have the appropriate coordinates of where this place is identified to be."
Marshall: "THEN WE'RE LOST AREN'T WE?!" He said in a bit of rage.
Chase: *sighs* "Yeah. We're lost..."
End of flashback
Chase: *growls* "MARSHALL!?"
Marshall: *blinks* "Sorry it's just...that dream makes me remember the day where I-I-I..." He started stammering a little, until he got silenced.
Chase: "Yeah, your haunted because of that day, I get it."
Marshall: *shakes head* "No...you don't get it! Nobody does! This!" He pointed to the scar on his leg. "This reminds me of that terrible day! It's better for my leg injury to be called 'clusmy' because that's what I was! And still am!"
Marshall started fighting back tears and Chase could tell that the pain that he went through was nothing like his own...Marshall's experience was far worse.
Chase: "Look Marshall I'm still sorry for you till this day but...right now I'm the one who is suffering."
Marshall: *sniffs* "I guess a broken heart might be worse." *exhales* "But still...I wish I could be normal. I wish that day new happened..."
Chase: "Your not the only one that wishes that. Everyone has a bad day once in a while. But to let that one bad day ruin good ones, that's the tragic part."
Marshall: *chuckles* "Did you come up with that?"
Chase: "Maybe..." He smiles hoping that he could make his teammate do the same. It did.
Marshall: *smiles* "Thanks for that talk. And I hope that I helped you find your future wife." He smirked.
Chase: *rolls eyes playfully* "Nice to have you back Marshall."
Marshall: "It's nice to be back." He said a little more cheerfully now.
Chase: "And what do you mean by future wife?"
Marshall: "Well what are you going to do when you find her?"
Chase: "I don't know. But what if I don't like her? I mean really, I don't just fall in love with just anyone."
Marshall: "But you trust her, don't you?"
Chase: "Definitely! She saved my life, it's like that saying. That if you trust somebody a lot then you could trust them with your life. And she proved just that."
Marshall: "Well then...you love her."
Chase: *sarcastic* "Yeah, right. How would you know?"
Marshall: "Listen Chase, if there is still one thing I know about you it's that when you trust a female pup, you start to fall for her. Believe me, I know!"
Chase just sits there. He knew that it was true, he just didn't want anyone else to know that it was. But he already told him. He didn't trust any female pup, the one pup from his past prevented it, he rarely would fully trust a female ever since...
Chase: *mutters* "Ciara..."
Marshall: "What?"
Chase eyes start filling with tears, some memories flooded his mind. He bites his lip and closes his eyes, then he quickly looked at ground so that Marshall can't see his reaction. He would despised it when people said 'her' name, let alone when he would say it.
Marshall: "Uh...Chase?"
Chase wipes eyes roughly and inhales a huge gap of air. Then looks up to face him.
Chase: "I'm fine. I'm-." He cuts himself off in case he gives it away.
Marshall: "Yeah?"
Chase: "...good. I'm good."
Marshall: "Okay?"
Chase: "Sorry it's just, I need a break or something."
Marshall: "How about we go inside the lookout? Like old times."
Chase: *smiles* "Sure." He said getting up. Also trying to cover up what just happened.
They both head to the lookout and enter it. All the pups immediately look up from what they were doing in shock.
Chase: "Hey guys!" He smiled looking at his friends that he hasn't seen in like forever!
Everest: *smiles* "Hi Chase."
Rubble: "Chase!!!" He said then running up to him and tackle him as a welcoming. "Your back!"
Chase: *smiles* "Nice to see you too Rubble."
Zuma: "Sup dude."
Rocky: "Hey Chase nice to have you back buddy."
Chase: "Yeah, it's been a while." He said then giving the warmest smile he could manage.
They all started talking at once and crowding around Chase, they all started laughing and joking, until a faint voice spoke over all of it.
Skye: "Chase?"
Everyone turned and looked toward her and then they all looked at Chase. Within seconds the crowd surrounding him opened into two separate small groups, allowing their leader to go through. Which he did, by only two short steps.
Chase: *sighs* "Hi, Skye." He said in a normal but yet stern voice.
Marshall: "Oh I forgot about her. Sorry." He said then nervously laughing.
Chase: "No, it's fine."
He then turned his attention to Skye, again.
Chase: "Look Skye, I don't want this to be arkward or anything so..."
Rubble: "Chase, it's always going to be arkward. She's your ex girlfriend!"
Chase: *grits teeth* "I know, I never forgot, thanks for the reminder Rubble, that I really didn't need!"
Rocky: "It's true tho."
Chase then glares at Rocky for that remark which causes him to immediately shut up.
Skye: "H-hi!" She finally responded, nervously.
After that everyone was quiet for while until Chase finally broke the tranquillity.
Chase: "How about we play a game?"
Zuma: "Yeah! Pup pup boogie anyone?"
Marshall: "Sure."
Everest: "I'll join."
Rocky: "Me too!"
Rubble: "Same here.
Skye: "Count me in too!"
Everyone was shocked except for Chase because her mood oddly shifted from sad and gloomy to pure happiness.
Everest: "Okay! All you guys can go set it up while me and Skye have a little chat."
Skye: "But-."
She didn't have a chance to say anything else because Everest grabbed her arm and held her back.
Zuma: 'Then I guess we will set it up then, dudes?"
Rocky: "Yeah, I'll help."
All the boys went to the big TV upstairs and started to activate the game.
Meanwhile
Skye: "Hey, what did you do that for?!"
Everest: "Don't play dumb. You know what I want to talk about."
Skye: "Please don't say-."
Everest: "Chase..."
Skye: *groans* "Do we have too?"
Everest: "Your ex boyfriend-"
Skye: "Don't say that!"
Everest: "Ha, in denial much?" She smirked.
Skye: "No! It's just...I don't like that term."
Everest: *rolls eyes* "Look I just want to know why you change as soon as Chase walked right through the door."
Skye: *looks at ground* "I don't know what the broxs your talking about." She then looks up.
Everest: "Oh really? You were all sad and gloomy but then when you spot Chase you turn back to a ray of sun shine. Strange. Very strange."
Skye: "I just want him to see me all happy."
Everest: "But your not 'all happy'. Your devastated of your break up with him! Aren't you?!"
Skye couldn't hold it in any longer.
Skye: *cries* "Of course I am! But if Chase can see me happy then maybe he would see that I may be different from every other stinking pup he has ever dated! Then just maybe *sobs* maybe he would take me back. You don't see him crying over...over an untrustworthy pup like me!"
Skye then started crying her heart out but surprisingly Everest started to comfort her.
Everest: "I know how you feel. And believe it or not...I once did the same thing."
Skye: *sniffs* "What? When?"
Everest: "When he loved you. I was heartbroken. So I put on a smile and asked if we could be friends. And that's what we've been. *sighs* Just... friends."
Skye: "Wait, Everest. Do you still love Chase?"
Everest's whole face turned lightly red but scared of Skye's reaction she decided that it was best for her to keep it to herself.
Everest: "Um, no. I-I don't. I used to but now no." She then faked a smiled.
Skye: "But did you really feel like Chase was the perfect guy for you?"
Everest: *sighs* "Actually, I have seen some other pup that was perfect for me but...I'll never see him again."
Skye: "Can I ask why you think that?" She said curiously.
Everest: "Well as you know my memory isn't the best but he left. At least to my knowledge I think that's why I haven't seen him in years. But the only thing I remember and will always remember is...his eyes. I can't explain it but it made me feel loved...even though we only met once."
Skye: "If it makes you feel any better, I hope you find him."
Everest: "Me too. But Skye I don't think Chase will take you back. Your doing it all wrong."
Skye: "Then how do I make it right?"
Everest: "Skye, the reason he broke up with you is because he doesn't think your trustworthy anymore, so you have too prove to him that now you are!"
Skye: "Maybe...but no. Chase still won't pick me to be his girl."
Everest: "Why would-."
Skye: "Because he already knows the girl he wants to be with!" She said raising her voice in anger out of no where.
Everest: "Who? Marshall also said something about Chase moving on with some other girl."
Skye: *growls* "That good for nothing mutt that saved his life! I was afraid of this happening, when I find her she's dead!"
Everest: "Hmm, I don't know why but that blizzard story-."
Skye: "Marshall lied! He didn't save Chase and I knew it but...he tricked me! I could've been together with Chase or not but then he said if I'm with Chase then he wouldn't know and he would still think Marshall was his 'hero'. But on the other hand-."
Everest: "Skye!"
Skye: "What?" She stopped rambling.
Everest: "I um already heard all of that before."
Skye: "How? I swear nothing is secret!"
Everest: "Well let's just say you and Marshall were not as quiet as you thought you were. And that some animals with no homes live around that forest."
Skye: *shocked* "So you know the whole truth."
Everest: "Yeah." She said sheepishly.
Skye: *thinking then says* "Everest, do you REALLY believe that Chase will take me back?"
Everest: "Well that depends, are you going to keep acting the way that caused your break up, *cough* like right now. Or will you act like the pup that he actually fell in love with in the first place? The trustable pup."
Skye: "Your right. I have to show Chase how much I really love him. And Everest don't you dare tell anyone about this!"
Everest: "Yup got it. Even though I could easily-."
Skye: *interrupts* "Let's just go upstairs and join the other pups."
Everest dropped her discussion and started to follow Skye. They went up the elevator and as the elevator doors opened Skye took a huge breath before continuing too the other pups. She hesitated when she saw Chase glimpse at her for only two seconds before he looked away.
Everest: *whispers* "You got this." She said nudging her.
Skye: "Can you sit next to me at least."
Everest: "Um, okay."
The pups placements were: Rocky, Marshall, Chase, Everest, and Skye in a row as the audience. While Zuma and Rubble were playing against each other.
Everest's POV: "I was fine with sitting next to Chase but for some reason I felt nervous. I know I shouldn't feel this way to him, but I just can't help it. But little did I know that my whole world would get flipped upside down...because of him."
Marshall: *whispers* "Chase, I was thinking, what if you never find the girl." He said avoiding making any other conversation with his 'team'.
Chase: *whispers* "That's what I'm afraid of, but I wouldn't say that it's impossible."
Marshall: "It sounds impossible. I mean really, have you looked at your chances? There is more than, I don't know, more than one billion girls on this planet!"
Chase: "Keep your voice down and there is actually out of 1000 people 504 are men and 496 are women. Mostly because for every 100 girls 107 boys are born, but males do have a higher chance of dying than females and that's just for humans so-."
Marshall: "Yeah yeah, but still."
Chase: *whispers* "I have information of her...features. So I can choose from that type of variety."
Marshall: *whispers* "But it's so little info, I really wish I could've giving you more. Plus that was when she was a younger."
Chase: "Hey, a little helps. I didn't have...any? Wait! When I was falling from that cliff, I saw..." He froze.
Marshall: "You saw what?"
Chase: "Her eyes...her blue eyes...they were beautiful! I never saw such eyes. They were one of a kind! That's how I will know it's her!"
Marshall: "Um Chase. You kinda said that out loud."
Chase freezes again, he blushes just the tiniest bit of what he just shared. He notices that all the pups were looking at him like he lost his mind or something.
Chase: *chuckles nervously* "Whoops. I didn't mean to um say t-that out loud. Er...continue what you were doing." *clears throat*
Everyone pretended too, except one pup.
Everest: "Did you say...blue eyes, Chase?"
This made everyone stop once more and just stare at the new speaker.
Chase: "Yeah?" He said a little uncomfortable.
That was all she needed.
Everest: "I-I have..." She stopped. *shakes head* "No. It can't be...or can it?"
She starts slowly walking to Chase like he was an illusion or something but out of no where Skye appeared between them.
Skye: "What are you doing?" She said suspicious.
Everest: "I want to know something." That was all she gave for Skye's question before she went around her, avoiding her completely.
But Skye wasn't done talking to her.
Skye: *growls* "I know what your thinking, Everest! But your wrong! Chase isn't the one, you met your perfect guy years ago!"
Everest: "That's the thing, Skye..."
Everest finally got close enough to Chase, an eye distance close.
Everest: "He is the guy..."
Chase: "What are you talking about?" He said beyond confused and uncomfortable.
Everest: "Don't you remember me? Or should I say, don't you remember my eyes? I remember yours...your brown eyes."
Chase raised an eyebrow, uncertain. But then, finally, realized exactly what she meant. His eyes widened at the thought. Because that's when he finally noticed something...HER blue eyes.
Chase: "Y-you...it's you!" He said bewildered.
Everyone else looked at both Chase and Everest, wondering what the heck they were talking about! But they later figured out.
Chase: "Everest?! ARE you the one that s-saved me?"
Everest opened her mouth but struggled to speak. Her eyes got misty and so she simply nodded her head and finally said the word she thought that she would never get to say to that question...
Everest: "Y-yes..." She said with joyous tears streaming down her face.
Everyone else's facial expression was different from disbelief, to shocked, to confused, angry, jealously, and then one in particular was just feeling hunger.
Everest: "I'm sorry..."
Then unexpectedly she did what any person would do when they had guilt.
She ran.
She just ran straight to the elevator. But as it closed and was going down she looked directly at Chase, his face mixed with confusion and sadness.
Chase: "Sorry for what?!"
Everest didn't answer. When she got to the bottom floor she dashed. She knew in no time that he would come down those stairs.
Everest's POV: *sniffs* "It is Chase...it's been him all along! But if only he knew...*sniffs*...I'm no hero. *sobs* If only he knew that...it was planned."
