What are we?
Hello. I suppose that we are whatever we think we are. This has interesting ramifications upon how we are supposedly thinking creatures. Perhaps it is the Althusserean Ideological State Apparatus that holds us in our uncomfortable capitalistic comfort, thinking about accumulation and the nuclear family, church and state. Perhaps we are products of Bentham's structure, the Foucaultian panopticon where we learn from the start to watch ourselves and limit ourselves for better or worse. This is why I believe everything is a dystopia. We are all under the control of who we think we are. Are we really this? Is this it? Assujettissement? Subjugation to structures that we mistake for history? History is a pleonasm for Marxism, according to Foucault, according to Mark Poster. We are subjugated to ourselves no matter what, but what goes into making ourselves be what we believe to be? I think that we are a product of many ideological structures that we have had no hand in building. We are also limited by the many contingencies that never transpired. What could have been? Who could we be if things had been slightly different? What are we?
