Chapter Three
Malantha had the same black aura surrounding her as Galatea, but above her head... was a flower.
She had been claimed.
Not by one, but two gods.
Hades and Persephone.
Everyone gasped.
"It seems," Chiron said slowly as the flower glinted, "that not only are you a demigod, but you might be more..." He needn't finish.
Malantha was a goddess.
Well, Maybe.
All attention was diverted from her when suddenly Aretha was claimed.
It all made sense now, she thought. She wasn't normal.
She was, somehow, the one and only daughter of Artemis.
"How?" she asked.
"Maybe it's like how the children of Athena are born," one kid suggested. "Like a gut liked her so much it... happened?"
"Seemingly so," said Chiron. "We'll decide tomorrow. For now, to bed! Hup hup!"
Needless to say, nobody got a lot of sleep that night...
Me? A possible goddess? thought Malantha. Yeah, right. And Athena's a satyr. Which then led to her thinking about the amusing possibility that Athena could, in fact, be half-goat.
The next morning finally arrived, with the first full day of training.
Malantha had opted to train with the Demeter cabin, seeing as she was claimed by Persephone. And, although she wouldn't admit it to anyone, she had found an acquaintance in a son of her supposed grandmother.
"Malantha!" Arman cried and tackled her into a binding hug.
"Good...to...see you too, Arman." she grumbled.
"Look! I made you this! I'm going to make everyone on the bus one!" he produced a flower-crown, and Malantha had to catch her breath.
Black. Roses.
"This is..." she tried to find the words to say it without-
"THE BEST THING EVER!!!!!"...and she lost it. She crammed it on, and squeezed Arman in a bone-crushing hug.
"Thanks, Arman!!" Arman smiled, glad he had brought a light into her usually porcelain white face.
"Hey, Princess." It was Felix. Alyssa rolled her eyes.
"Hey Queen." she replied. He mockingly looked taken aback.
"Oh, come on! I'm not that dramatic!" He said as dramatically as he could.
"Oh, yes you are."
"Well, than, Princess..." He slung her over his shoulder to the shock of her (and his) half-siblings.
"Put me down!"
"You didn't say the magic word!"
"Please!"
"Ah, ah, ah! First we must bring you to your throne, oh Princess of Wisdom!" he yelled back.
"Felix!" his siblings called.
"Alyssa!" screamed hers. Both groups looked at each other. If this was how those two would act the entire summer, than they were in for one long ride.
Aretha didn't even flinch from her spot in the trees as an angry Alyssa, being carried by a silly Felix, being chased down by sighing Athena cabin mates and stifling chuckles Hermes roommates, being trailed by dying-of-laughter Apollo cabin members, being followed by curious and giggling campers passed by.
"PUT ME DOWN!" Alyssa screamed.
"NOPE!" Felix yelled with unneeded volume. The Apollo cabin finally collapsed, laughing all the while. Felix placed her down on a make-shift throne, and fished a paper crown out of his pocket.
"My little princess," Felix crooned, getting down on one knee, while the Hermes cabin started laughing themselves, earning withering looks from the Athena and Aphrodite cabins, though each had their own reasons. Alyssa hopped down from the 'throne', cursed in ancient Greek, and slapped him. She stormed back to training, while finally, even the children of Athena started to laugh. Aretha allowed herself a small smile, and jumped into a separate part of the forest and trees.
Aretha and the Apollo cabin had been placed together in training, and Aretha was finding it painfully annoying. But as they came closer and closer to archery, Aretha knew she would probably get owned by them. As they finally approached the arena, her heart sank. The instructor handed her a bow and three arrows wordlessly. She took another breath.
Here goes nothing.
She drew the arrow, and let it fly.
WHOOSH. Bulls-eye.
WHIZZ. It splintered the former arrow.
SHWOOSH. The arrow drilled through the fabric of the target. Aretha dropped the bow in surprise, and jumped back. She stared at the gaping hole, gaping. Had she really done that? She turned to find the Apollo kids, well, appalled. They were all thinking the same thing.
This girl was good.
