Chapter 8

"DIMENTIO?!" Luigi shouted, bursting into the cabin. It was equally cold inside as it was out. Luigi could even see his breath in front of him. It looked like a puff of smoke. He himself was feeling his own temperature drop, so he couldn't even imagine what Dimentio was feeling. The man in green hugged himself, shivering as he frantically turned around himself.

"D-DIMENTIO?! ARE YOU ALRIGHT?!" He cried, desperately looking around the dark room. It was nighttime, so the natural lighting didn't brighten up the inside. It was just dark and cold.

And silent.

"Dimentio?" Luigi begged. "Dimentio, please say something! I-it's dark! I can't see you!"

There was a long pause of silence, each second making Luigi's heart drop more and more.

"Oh Grambi," He muttered under his breath, when he finally spotted the jester, lying hopelessly on the floor. "DIMENTIO!" Luigi shouted, immediately dropping his bag on the floor, running over and kneeling down.

The jester didn't respond.

He wasn't shivering. His teeth weren't chattering.

This was worrying.

"Oh, Grambi, please don't be dead. Please don't be dead." Luigi cried, scooping his arms below Dimentio's back and under his knees so he could pick him up. His skin was ice cold.

"H-here! I've brought more firewood! I'll make a fire and get you warmed up in no time!" Luigi assured, bringing Dimentio close to the fireplace and setting him down in front of it. Then, he scrambled backward and picked up his bag with all his supplies. "I-I'm sorry I didn't come sooner. I should have come sooner. Grambi, I'm such a screwup."

He organized all the firewood over the fireplace, trembling violently. The cold started making his hands go numb, making this even harder. Once the wood was organized he fumbled around, trying to remember where he placed the matches. He let out a nervous laugh as soon as he found them and quickly lit one, holding it to the wood and lighting the fire.

Luigi let out a sigh of relief and relaxed slightly once he felt the heat of the fire, but instead of leaving he scooted forward and gently picked Dimentio up, just sitting there and holding him.

"Come on, please wake up..." Luigi whispered, looking down at him. "I mean, think about it. Freezing to death sounds like a really dumb way for someone like you to die."

Luigi tried laughing to himself, but it wasn't a true laugh. It was incredibly forced and almost sounded like a sob instead. So, that's what it turned into. "Please," Luigi sobbed, squeezing his eyes shut and looking down. "Wake up. I'll never be able to forgive myself if you don't wake up."

Luigi opened his eyes and looked down at him, hoping for something. Anything. Just some kind of response.

"...Okay," Luigi breathed, voice sounding almost heartbroken. "You don't have to wake up right now. I'll wait..."

And he did. For about three hours. He had no idea what time it was, but Luigi was guessing somewhere around midnight, but he waited for Dimentio to wake up, each minute losing a little bit of home.

But, before he was about to give up and go home, he felt Dimentio adjust slightly, filling the man in green with hope all of a sudden. The jester began to shiver and his eyes slowly fluttered open as he looked up at Luigi, blinking in confusion.

"Y-y-you c-came back?" Dimentio whispered, voice soft, but there. Luigi wanted to cry.

"OH, THANK GRAMBI!" Luigi exclaimed, torn between laughing and crying. "I-I thought you were a goner."

Dimentio furrowed his eyebrows, still looking up at Luigi in confusion. "You came back?" He repeated.

"Well of course. I couldn't let you freeze. It's getting colder by the minute. You could have died!" Luigi exclaimed. "I was worried I was too late!΅

"S-s-so?"

"SO?!" Luigi yelled. "SO YOU COULD HAVE DIED! There shouldn't be a 'so.'"

"W-w-why d-do you care?" Dimentio questioned, not accusing, but generally confused. "This is your third time in my presence. Have you no for regard for your safety?"

"WHY DON'T YOU CARE?!" Luigi cried as the fire crackled, carefully pulling him closer to himself. "You know what? If you're not gonna care about your health then I will. Now, here. Let's get you warmed up."

Dimentio normally would have pushed Luigi back and have been repulsed by the unwanted physical contact, but Luigi was so much warmer. All his body could focus on was the warmth, and how to get more of it. He couldn't find it in himself to be angry. Even though his mind was upset and confused, his body told him he needed the warmth. The jester paused for a moment, looking up at Luigi with a confused expression, then closed his eyes and leaned into him. The cold was making him feel so very tired, no matter how much rest he had gotten. Perhaps it was because of his ever slowing heart rate.

"Y-you're strange," Dimentio noted.

"And you're freezing. Here, I got you something." Luigi muttered.

Then the man in green briefly let go and set him down, turning to grab his bag, making Dimentio briefly panic at the feeling of the warmth leaving and the cold returning.

But the panic was quick, because Luigi came back, taking the purple cloak and gently wrapping it around Dimentio.

"Here. I figured... this would keep you much warmer than what you usually wear. You can just wear it over your tank top. I-I also got you these shoes. Y-you know! For your feet. Eheh, they're really warm. The cloak is too. It's a really nice fabric. Warm, but not suffocating. "

Dimentio looked up at him with a confused expression, then looked down at the purple cloak wrapped around him.

"D-Dio?" The Dimentio asked. "Why d-does it s-say Dio?"

"Oh, w-well it's a nickname. You know, like Dimentio, but shorter!" Luigi chimed, slightly worried that Dimentio hated it.

"I-I know what a n-nickname is," Dimentio replied. "W-why are you g-giving me one?"

"I-if you don't like it, I can take it back and get it changed. Or I could buy you a new one. Or-"

"No, no," Dimentio interrupted, looking down at the name and softly smiling. "I... I like it. But why are y-y-you giving this to me?"

"Well, it's a gift," Luigi explained.

"I g-get that. W-why are y-y-you getting me a-a gift though?"

"Because it's Christmas. And it's cold. Just swallow your pride and accept it already." Luigi urged. "No one is going to judge you."

Dimentio lightly laughed, rolling his eyes. "Alright. V-very well. I accept your gifts. Happy?"

"Very!" Luigi chimed, reaching into his bag and pulling out some more things. "I-I also got you some other things! I brought some cocoa powder so you could make hot chocolate. A-and some tea bags for tea! I also got you some food to help you get by for a little since you don't really have any. I've got some oatmeal, some snacks, some soups, all kinds of things! A-and here's a little portable backpacking stove! You can use it to heat water so you can cook some things! I thought you might need it since you don't have any power here. It's really easy to use and everything, and it doesn't need to be connected to anything in order to work, so you can use it without power!" The man in green explained, pulling out all the items.

"Luigi... what are you doing?" Dimentio asked, interrupting Luigi's rambling.

"What's it look like I'm doing? I'm helping you." Luigi replied.

"Why though? What have I ever done for you to make you feel the need to do all this for me? Do you want something from me in return out of this?" Dimentio questioned.

"No, no. I just... I just..." Luigi trailed off.

"You just...?"

Luigi paused. He really wasn't sure why he was here. He wasn't sure what he was doing, or what his reasons for doing all this were. He didn't want anything in return out of this, he knew that for sure. And he was aware that he wasn't really benefiting in any way out of this. So why was he doing it?

"I just... want to help show you how wonderful the world really is," Luigi admitted.

"You do realize that you're wasting your time," Dimentio argued.

"Maybe I am. But maybe I'm not." Luigi shrugged.

Luigi sighed after Dimentio remained silent for a moment, then kneeled down next to him and placed the back of his hand on the jester's forehead. It was ice cold. Dimentio immediately flinched from the touch and recoiled.

"What are you-" He started, before his voice broke and his lungs stopped him from speaking, making him cough instead. Luigi immediately drew his hands back and offered an apologetic look.

"I'm sorry-"

"Why aren't you afraid of me?!" Dimentio interrupted, voice somewhat dry and hoarse.

Luigi paused, then looked down at his hand. "I'm not sure," He admitted, lowering it and sighing. He was honestly just as confused about this as he was about why he willingly came back.

That's not true. He knew the answer. But the answer only made him more confused.

"I'm not afraid because I don't have to be," Luigi corrected. "It's like I said. I can tell you're not going to hurt me."

"Why did you REALLY come back?!" Dimentio breathed. "What do you want out of this?! Everyone wants something."

"I wanted you to not die. Was I supposed to just let you freeze?" Luigi calmly questioned.

"It would have made sense," Dimentio argued.

"Maybe to everyone else, but not to me. No matter who you were, no matter what you did, I couldn't just let you freeze."

Dimentio wanted to argue back, but he couldn't. It was just a character flaw of Luigi. He should have left him to freeze, but he didn't. He should have stayed away, but he didn't. Having a big heart was most definitely going to get him hurt one day.

"Why haven't you told your brother about me?" Dimentio questioned after a minute, causing Luigi's face to go slightly pale.

"U-uh... well..." Luigi mumbled. "I-If I did... then h-he'd probably kill you. Even if I told him not to, he probably would, and I wouldn't be able to stop him."

"And why not?" Dimentio questioned. "You're clearly stronger."

"I don't know about that," Luigi chuckled. "But... well, he's my brother. I don't want to fight him. Wherever I do I just let him win."

"Hmmm... You know... you're much different from the Mr. L I knew," Dimentio observed.

"What do you mean?" Luigi asked.

"Well... you seem far less selfish. Less arrogant. Less rude. But... there's also a downside to this side of you I can see clear as crystal." Dimentio pointed out.

"Oh? R-really? And what would that be?" Luigi questioned.

"You lack Mr. L's confidence. Mr. L was quite a pain to work with, but if there was one thing I did admire about him, it was his confidence."

"Oh?"

"I'm not one for giving advice, but I can tell in the way you present yourself. Like the way you immediately took your hand back when I flinched. I could tell before I even met you that you clearly lack it, letting your brother push you around or lead the way. You should let that side out of you a little more. You need to just... bring out the Mr. L in you and plant yourself where you wish to stand. No matter who wishes to knock you down." Dimentio explained.

"Heh, that's a lot easier said than done," Luigi admitted.

"Well, Mr. L made it look easy," Dimentio smirked, leaning forward to soak up more heat from the fire. He didn't seem to be freezing anymore, Luigi noticed.

"....But those boots on," Luigi told Dimentio.

"Why?" Dimentio pondered, still mesmerized by the warmth of the flames.

"Just do it."

"Alright, Alright. I'm doing it," Dimentio sighed, putting the boots on. He normally wouldn't, but he was curious as to what Luigi wanted.

Turned out Luigi wasn't lying. The boots were incredibly warm. They fit well too. And the cloak did quite an excellent job of keeping his body heat inside without making him feel suffocated like a winter coat usually would. He was feeling much more comfortable now.

"Alright. Now what?" Dimentio asked once his boots were on.

Luigi smiled and stood up, holding his hand down to the jester.

"Now, you take my hand."

Dimentio looked at it and lightly chuckled. "Is there even a point in asking why at this point?" Dimentio asked.

"Just do it."

"Yeah, thought so," Dimentio breathed, taking the man in green's hand. It was warm. It actually felt somewhat nice, though Dimentio's hand was about half the size.

Luigi smiled a true smile and hoisted the jester up, pulling him towards the door. "We're going outside."

The jester's smile faded in an instant. "WHAT?!" Dimentio yelled with a frightened tone in his voice all of a sudden, immediately regretting being idiotic enough to take Luigi's hand. "No, no, no. I most definitely will NOT be doing that."

"Oh, yes you will," Luigi replied, trying the confidence thing out. It felt weird but nice.

"Luigi, I can't," Dimentio shouted in protest. "There's snow! I've never been in the snow."

"Well, I think it's about time you tried,'' Luigi replied, letting go and opening the door, running outside while Dimentio froze in the doorway, refusing to take another step.

Luigi paused and looked back at the jester, who looked almost terrified, lightly shivering.

"Hey," Luigi said, stepping back and smiling a warm smile. "It'll be okay. You're not going out there alone. Do you trust me?"

"W-What?" Dimentio slowly asked, looking up.

Luigi held a steady hand out to him.

"Do you trust me?"
